From the Principal
Welcome back to the start of Term 2. I hope you had a restful break and enjoyed the beautiful weather we were blessed with during that time. It was a positive and busy start to 2021 and this term will also be another very full term of learning and many other enriching events. I particularly look forward to you joining us this evening for our KPF - BUILDING LEADERSHIP IN YOUR KIDS presented by Alexandre Havard via Zoom. A topic I am confident as parents you will find informative and practical.
ANZAC DAY CEREMONY
On Monday 26 April our beautiful school community assembled together for our Anzac Day Ceremony. It was a privilege to have Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Lam join us for this very solemn ceremony and remind us of the importance of the ANZAC spirit - of mateship, humour, ingenuity, courage, and endurance.
It is with respect that we commemorate ANZAC Day, and we acknowledge the brave men and women who have served, and those who continue to serve to protect our great nation. They are a reminder to us all, to work together and draw upon the ANZAC spirit during tough times, as most recently displayed during the bushfires and the coronavirus pandemic.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR MOCK TRIAL TEAM
Tangara Girls prove once again that they are gifted speakers (not just in the classroom), winning the first two rounds of the Mock Trial Competition. In the first round against Asquith Girls, our prosecution team won their criminal case, impressing all in the audience with their professionalism and eloquence.
In the Second Round, Tangara’s defence won their criminal case against the prosecution team from Cherrybrook Technology High School. The presiding Magistrate applauded our students for their display of professionalism and aptitude of expression in the Trial procedures. He was so impressed that he invited our students to approach him for professional career guidance.
A fantastic accomplishment for the Tangara Mock Trial team and a special word of thanks to Mrs Sahni and Miss Touma who have been so generous with their time and have prepared our girls so well.
OPEN WEEK and 2022 Enrolments
I am delighted to be sharing some very exciting news with you about our Term 2 Open Week and 2022 Enrolments. We have over 200 families registered for our Term 2 Open Week.
In order to accommodate the large number of families attending, we will be hosting Open Week on Tuesday 18, Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 May.
We now have a waiting list for the following year groups in 2022 - Kindergarten, Year 4, Year 6, Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9. We will still be accepting applications but any applications for these year groups will now be waitlisted.
Someone reminded me recently that for a relatively young school (39 years) we have accomplished so much. Thanks for the part each of you continues to play in making Tangara the special and unique school it is. It's a privilege to work with such a great community.
Let's continue to pray for the wonderful future of our school community.
MOTHER’S DAY MASS
Mothers play a significant role in our families and in society and so it is fitting that each year we celebrate Mother’s Day by showing our appreciation for the love, support and care they provide to each of us throughout our lives. There is no greater role model for mothers than Mary, the Mother of God. During the month of May we pay special honour and respect to the Mother of God who through her example of faith, trust, humility, patience and unconditional love is a role model for all mothers.
To show our love and appreciation for our Tangara mothers, we extend an invitation to you to celebrate Mass with us during the month of May.
This year we are inviting all our Infants and Year 7 Tangara mothers to a special Mother’s Day Mass next Friday 7 May at 9.15am, followed by morning tea in Undercroft.
For all our other mothers, we invite you to join your daughter(s) on their designated Mass Day for their year group in our School Chapel, followed by refreshments afterwards in the Undercroft. Specific details will follow shortly.
Remembering and praying for all our mothers next Sunday 9 May. Happy Mother’s Day Tangara Mums!
From the Chaplain
Pope Francis asked for a "Rosary Marathon" in May to pray for an end to COVID. He'll start in St Peter's, then a different shrine will lead the prayer each day until the pope closes the month of prayer in the Vatican gardens. Here are a list of the shrines.
Teaching gender fluidity in schools
I understand a bill before the New South Wales parliament aims to prohibit the teaching of gender fluidity in schools. What is this and why is it so important?
First Holy Communion
Father John would like to invite the parents of Year 3 students who have made or will make their first Holy Communion to a talk about the Blessed Eucharist.
The talk will take place at Tangara on Saturday 29 May at 2pm. Room to be advised.
If you are interested in attending please RSVP to Julia Herrenberg admin@tangar.nsw.edu.au

From the Infants School
Welcome to Term 2! What a big week we have had as we launch into what is going to be a busy and exciting term at Tangara Infants.
A warm welcome to the new families that have joined Tangara Infants this term. We hope all our families will quickly feel part of the PARED community.
Healthy Harold
Our boys and girls are enjoying their visits to the “Healthy Harold – Life Education” van. They are having lots of fun learning about healthy lifestyle choices, how to make friends, take care of their bodies and be healthy and stay safe by participating in hands-on activities and joining in with songs. Everyone just loves Healthy Harold!
ANZAC Day Ceremony
Our ANZAC Day Ceremony on Monday 26 April was a solemn occasion as our students joined the main school to remember and honour the brave servicemen and woman who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice so we may have the peace and freedoms we enjoy today. The guest speaker, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Lam gave the address while the boys and girls watched on as the Ode was read, the Last Post played and a minute of silence observed. The Reveille rang out as the flag was slowly raised to masthead. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
Key Parent Function
We look forward to our Virtual Key Parent Function taking place on Thursday 29 April and 13 May at 7:45pm. This will take the form a two part online presentation by Alexandre Havard entitled “Building Leadership in your Kids.” Alexandre is an author as well as the founder of the Virtuous Leadership Institute, which promotes the classical virtues as the basis of effective leadership. I have had the privilege of previewing some of these sessions and have found then to be informative and most helpful. These are sure to be very enlightening sessions in helping parents build leadership in themselves and their children.
Infants Uniform Inspection
There will be a uniform inspection for all Infants taking place on Tuesday 11 May this term. It is important that our students learn to take pride in their school, themselves and their appearance. Please refer to the Junior School Handbook guidelines for the correct Winter school uniform.
Grow in Virtue (GIVE)
This term we will be covering Kindness, Fairness, Friendliness and Clean Heart (Purity) in the Grow In Virtue Each Day program. Please discuss the virtue with your child and come up with a small, manageable home goal.
The students have a kindness jar in each class into which place acts of kindness. The boys and girls can be seen sharing their toys while playing, helping to keep the classroom tidy by collecting rubbish, assisting and helping others with opening and closing crunch and sip containers and much more. What generous children we have at Tangara Infants!
Finally we thank all our class parents for the vital role they play in assisting our families feel welcome and supported. A special thank you to Nysa and Gaston Kohar (Parents of Josie) for taking on the role of Class parents for 1 Silver this year.

Farmers for a Day
At the end of Term 1, Year 4 girls had a wonderful opportunity to learn more about how milk and cheese are produced and how farmers look after their cows. The Year 4 girls dressed as farmers and had the chance to milk a cow, make cheese and interact with a special little calf. It was a very enjoyable learning experience.
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
The virtue we are growing in this week is KINDNESS.
I am practicing kindness when I:
· Give attention to someone who is sad or needs help
· Do things that give others happiness
· Accept people who are different
· Take good care of animals
· Resist the temptation to be cruel.

Ancient Rome, Egypt and Greece have been the focus for the latest unit of work in Year 9 and the girls have been working hard on honing their ceramic skills to create a terracotta vessel using hand building techniques. It’s the largest piece we’ve attempted! We will soon fire, underglaze and sgraffito to complete our designs based on Greek imagery and motifs.

TAS NEWS Technology Learning Progress
At the Parent Teacher meetings one of my first questions with parents is- Is your child sharing their learning in Technology with you? Talking with your child about the school day shows you’re interested in what’s going on in her life. This interest boosts her mental health, happiness and wellbeing. It can also have a very positive effect on your child’s behaviour and achievement. It shows your child that you value school and education, which encourages her to value it too. Technology learning is hands-on and challenging and it is always great to get the family involved in our design briefs.
I’m sure the talk at the end of term one for Year 4, Year 7, and 11 and 12 Food Technology students was all about the Mobile Dairy Classroom. It’s a first for Tangara to host 6 cows on our oval. The girls explored how a dairy farm is a managed environment and investigated innovative and sustainable ways it produces milk and milk products.
Year 9 Gifted and Talented Science Project
Some Year 9 students were selected to take part in the Asian Herbs in Space project this term. Over the next few weeks the students will be growing basil seeds and collecting data about stem length and the number of leaves. They will then compare this information with data collected from a similar experiment being conducted on the International Space Station. The intention is to see how the conditions on the International Space Station impact the growth of the basil seeds.
The results will be published in the Rust and Navy soon.
Exploring Shakespeare with Year 10
In Drama, Year 10 spent all of Term 1 exploring the different Theatrical Conventions of Elizabethan Drama. Students performed scenes from a selection of Shakespearean plays in front of their classmates.
