This term, our Year 7 Food Technology students have been cooking up more than just delicious waffles, they’ve been building essential life skills in the kitchen. Working in small teams, students used electric waffle makers to prepare golden, fluffy waffles, applying both practical and theoretical knowledge learned in class.
The lesson focused on the role of eggs in cooking, food safety, and the importance of hygiene to prevent the spread of bacteria. Students demonstrated responsible and safe use of kitchen equipment, including handling hot appliances and cleaning workstations thoroughly.
Beyond the cooking itself, the activity encouraged teamwork and leadership. Each group collaborated to read and follow recipes accurately, developing literacy skills and learning to delegate tasks effectively. Teachers observed students taking initiative, supporting peers, and problem-solving together, skills that are just as valuable outside the kitchen.
The waffle-making session was a fun and engaging way to reinforce classroom theory with hands-on experience. Parents can be proud of the confidence and competence their children are gaining in food preparation, safety, and collaboration. We look forward to more tasty learning adventures ahead!
