The 2023 academic year has concluded in line with our School Motto, "Ad Summam Virtutem," guiding each child at Tangara on their journey toward academic and personal excellence. I extend my gratitude to the entire Tangara family for contributing to another outstanding year of learning and personal growth across the entire school.
Our Infants Christmas Concert last Monday, and Presentation Evening last Wednesday, served as fitting conclusions to the school year. Tangara showcased its singing, dancing, acting, and musical talents, whilst also providing an opportunity to celebrate the efforts and achievements of our award winners.
As the summer holidays draw near, filled with excitement and a welcomed break from the usual routine, it's beneficial to plan ahead. Let's ensure that the break becomes an opportunity for our children to unwind, revitalize their minds and bodies, delve into reading, and embrace "green time" over excessive "screen time." Encouraging moments of "boredom" is essential, as it fosters creativity and inspires them to explore constructive activities and thoughts. Even our Year 12 girls need a substantial break away from their studies. It's crucial for them to recharge their batteries during this period!
As the year draws to a close, I would like to thank every member of staff for their dedication and hard work. We are privileged indeed to have such talented teachers and support staff here at Tangara. And, to each of our students – thank you for your enthusiasm, for your dedication to learning and to achieving your personal best. I also would like to thank every member of our community for your incredible support and for continuing to partner with us to educate our students and to form them as well rounded individuals.
The lead up to Christmas is usually so busy. Whilst we prepare for Christmas gatherings, gift giving and spending time with family, let us not neglect preparing ourselves - our hearts, minds and souls for the coming of God himself through the person of Jesus. Let us reflect on the words of Pope Benedict XVI that “Only if people change will the world change; and in order to change, people need the light that comes from God, the light which so unexpectedly on the night of Christmas entered into our night”. As we approach this Christmas and beyond, let us strive to be the light of truth, hope and love that our world needs.
Wishing you and your families a blessed Christmas filled with every happiness and joy, and I look forward to seeing you all in 2024.

It is very useful to have at home a physical reminder of this truth: a nativity scene. As Pope Francis explains:
"Dear brothers and sisters, I would like to invite every man and woman to the stable of Bethlehem to adore the Son of God made man. May each one of us draw near to the Nativity scene in our homes or in church or in another place, and try to make an act of adoration, within [ourselves]: “I believe you are God, that this baby is God. Please, grant me the grace of humility to be able to understand”.
The nativity scene can play an important role during Christmas. Firstly, when setting it up. It can be a good occasion for a fun family activity: all the family (according to the age of the kids) helps in designing and making the scene, while some Christmas carols can be played on Spotify out loud and end the whole operation with a special lunch or dinner.
Also, maybe after a family breakfast, a short morning offering can be said in front of the nativity. Some days the rosary can be prayed and carols can be sung next to the nativity. Even Santa gifts can be placed at the foot of the nativity so that we realise that those gifts are a reminder of the great gift: Jesus is given to us.
And as we are wrapping up this 2023 academic year, from Tangara chaplaincy we wish you merry Christmas and in our daily Mass we will keep praying for our whole school community: families, staff and students. Merry Christmas!

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas
It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

As we approach the end of another year, I am thankful for the wonderful journey we've shared together. Through the dedication of our exceptional teachers, our infants children have blossomed into young learners with curious minds, ready to take on new adventures.
To our parents, your support and trust in our community have been the cornerstone of our success in fostering a love for faith, learning, and kindness. And to our students, you've filled our school with laughter, joy, and endless possibilities.
Our last few weeks of school have been busy with preparing for the Christmas Season. We have been focusing on preparing our hearts for Jesus during Advent. The children have visited the nativity in the chapel, where they have had the opportunity to reflect upon the Annunciation when Mary said “Yes” to being the Mother of Jesus.
A letter box from the North Pole appeared recently, which was for very special mail. The children wrote prayers and wishes for others. The intentions in the mailbox were sent directly to Heaven.
On behalf of the Infants team, I would like to wish you all a blessed and safe Christmas.

The academic year has ended in a burst of tinsel and singing! Schools are such busy places, but the busyness of Term 4 is a special type of busyness which is punctuated by gratitude and excitement.
Preparing for Christmas
We were lucky to have a beautiful Nativity scene as the central focus of our buildings in the Primary School. It was a lovely reminder of this special time of year. Some Year 6 girls welcomed the Year One students and helped them write a letter to Baby Jesus. It’s hard to know who enjoyed the experience more, the Year 6 girls or the little Year 1 students!
Special Awards
Congratulations to our very own Jasmine H from Year 5 who was presented with a Certificate of Commendation from IPSHA (Independent Primary School Heads of Australia), acknowledging her outstanding effort and active participation in Social Action projects.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
We also presented some of our Students Certificates acknowledging their participation in the Premiers Reading Challenge. This challenge is open to all students in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 10 and promotes a love of reading and quality literature. Congratulations to the girls who received these awards. Please enjoy the photographs.
Primary Sing Along Christmas Assembly
Our last Primary Assembly was such fun. Our captains presented a hilarious skit about the true meaning of Christmas, then we all enjoyed a fabulous Christmas Sing along. Special thanks to Mrs Hallman for putting together a rousing collection of fun carols.
Finally, a huge thank you for all the support you have shown me this year. I wish you all a beautiful Christmas with your families.

Movie and Book Comparison day in Year 2
Movie and Book Comparison day in Year 2
Year 2 have been reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl as part of their modelled reading and comprehension lessons. To end this novel study, Year 2 girls watched the original version of the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory this week.
Before the movie was played a movie kiosk was set up and students put mathematical skills into real life by purchasing popcorn, lollies etc from the kiosk using 'pretend money'.
We started by giving each child a (pretend) $5 note, $2 coin, 2 x $1 coin and 2 x 50c coins, as well as a Movie Kiosk Price List. We gave them a list of Word Maths Problems to solve, using the Kiosk Price list. It was FASCINATING to watch the mathematical thinking of these real life problems, after all they needed to maximise their spending at the kiosk to enjoy as many treats as possible while watching the movie. Then it was time to shop at the movie kiosk! The girls came with the (pretend) money and purchased their food - it was interesting which children spent all their money at once compared to the children who bought a little bit and 'saved' money for later. Next the children set up their viewing spots with their friends - with their blanket, pillow or squishmallow!
Soon the movie started and the children LOVED pointing out the similarities and differences between the book and the movie!

Year 7 and 9 surf education program
Year 7 and 9 surf education program

In the second last week of school, year 7 and 9 participated in a surf awareness program at Dee Why beach. The program aims to provide students with skills to remain safe in a water environment, particularly at the beach, including rip education and identification, sculling to survive, floatation to survive, still water assessment, and riding waves using foam boards and their own bodies to return to shore. Our students found some of the activities quite challenging, as the weather was not the best during the day. The waves were somewhat choppy, which meant it was difficult for some students to remain on their foam boards. However, I was so impressed with the determination our students demonstrated despite the cold and slightly windy conditions. They kept having a go at trying to improve their skill and ability in the surf. It was nice to end the program with a pizza lunch and a few games of cricket on the beach.
I would like to thank the following staff members for assisting me with supervision on the day:
Miss Sammut, Mrs De Kock, Mrs Mitchell, Mrs Dirkze, Mrs Engesser, Mrs Hill, Mrs Herrera, Mrs Park, Mrs Limbers, Mrs Labram and Miss Abboud.

Year 10 RYDA excursion
Year 10 RYDA excursion

On 20/11/23, our year 10 students attended a RYDA workshop at Cricket NSW, Sydney Olympic Park. RYDA is the leading national road safety education program for youth in Australia, providing young people with the skills and strategies they need to stay safe on our roads.
The RYDA program consists of six highly engaging sessions, including practical demonstrations, real-life narratives, videos, and quizzes. Created for senior high school students, RYDA supports youth development in a variety of areas including social resilience and anticipating and managing risk and gives students a unique chance to set road safety goals and build strategies alongside the friends they will most likely be riding with as drivers or passengers. It is a great opportunity for our year 10 students as almost half of them are already learning to drive! Here is what a few of our students thought about the day:
‘I thought that the excursion was extremely worthwhile especially since we are just starting to drive and become road users. The excursion provided key insights into ways to stay safe, as well as sufficient warnings to the consequences and statistics related to speeding and other accidents to improve road safety” – Lilliana Stillone, 10 Navy.
“It really opened my eyes to discover a different perspective of things….that the smallest mistakes can change your life in an instant.” – Gabrielle Nassif, 10 Rust.
"The excursion we had the pleasure of going on was very eye opening and makes you think twice of not only your safety, but the safety of others while on the road." – Eiman Sarfraz, 10 Rust.
I would like to thank Miss Sunner and Mrs Benson for accompanying the students and me on this day, as without adequate supervision, such opportunities could not go ahead.
Mrs Tricia Eckersley
Head of PDHPE

REAL - Forgiveness in Action
REAL - Forgiveness in Action

In REAL this week we followed up the amazing testimony of forgiveness from Danny and Leila Abdallah with a Workshop - Forgiveness in Action!
Forgiveness involves an intentional decision to let go of resentment and anger. In REAL , we learnt the three different ways people react to a hurtful situation. Some ignore it, some take revenge and others forgive. There’s always a choice of how we react to an offence against us. There’s always a space of freedom and that lies in how we choose to react. The greatest freedom comes from the choice to forgive!
We learnt that to forgive takes 3 steps.
Examine what has happened. How did it make you feel? Was it fair or just?
Decide if you want to forgive, let go or change your inner world. Having been affected by the other’s injustice, you then decide to practice forgiveness, understanding that you are offering merciful goodness and not condoning.
“Seeing with new eyes,” as the forgiver sees that the injuring person is more than the offenses she has committed. The forgiver sees the unconditional worth of the other as a person, which can lead to empathy and compassion and eventually to the willingness to offer goodness to the other out of mercy.
It is here that forgiveness takes root, opening up the possibility of restored emotional and relational health.
We then split into small groups and worked through scenarios and role played the three different reactions and the steps to forgiveness.
For example, imagine you are being excluded, all of your friends are throwing a party and you are not invited and you see it all on social media. If you choose to ignore it, you are letting them take advantage of you. You are bottling up your emotions and pretending that you do not care, but really - you do. This is not the correct way of reacting to a situation like this. But neither is revenge. For example, you may be upset because of the party and so you invite everyone else except for that one person to take revenge on them. You put yourself in a state of hurt and negativity. Once the idea of revenge gets inside your head, you start engaging in negative feelings and thoughts. People can then start to lose your trust. So revenge is not the correct way to react. Instead , try to understand the person’s point of view. Forgiveness can help free you from the control of the person who harmed you. Sometimes, forgiveness might even lead to feelings of understanding, empathy and compassion for the one who hurt you.
