Swimming Carnival
The clouds were grey and the skies opened wide but there was fantastic House spirit at our Swimming Carnival last Tuesday. The inclement weather could not stop our girls from having a go and doing their best, some even swimming their personal best times. The winning Houses and age champions will be announced next week. Thank you to Miss Sunner and the PDHPE Department for the organisation of the carnival and thank you to all the parents who joined us on the day. Your presence and support is always appreciated.
Lent and Ash Wednesday
Our Ash Wednesday Mass was a very beautiful and solemn way to commence our Lenten Season - a time of personal reflection and spiritual growth. Fr Paul gave us some very concrete examples of how we can grow in our relationship with God and others over the next 40 days and hopefully beyond. You will find his homily in a separate section of the Rust and Navy.
Pope Francis in his 2023 Lenten message encourages us to listen to what Jesus wants to tell us through the Scriptures and through others. He writes “In addition to the Scriptures, the Lord speaks to us through our brothers and sisters, especially in the faces and the stories of those who are in need.” Please encourage your children this Lent to take advantage of Tangara’s many community service opportunities, as well as thinking of how you as a family can respond to the needs of others this lenten season.
Naplan Results
The Daily Telegraph has announced the 2022 NAPLAN state and regional rankings and we are pleased to see that Tangara has placed in the top-performing schools once again! Here are some notable statistics:
Ranked 40th in NSW for Secondary
Ranked 47th in NSW for Primary
Ranked 2nd in the Hills Shire for Secondary
Ranked 6th in the Hills Shire for Primary
Ranked 8th in the Western Sydney region for Secondary and Primary
Ranked as Western Sydney's 8th best-performing school for Year 9
We are so proud of the efforts of our students, parents and staff who are committed to working together to help every child achieve their personal best. These results, which are only one measure of success, highlight for us that the strong partnership that exists between home and school is not only reflected in great academic results but also in happy and engaged learners, which is so evident at our school each day.
So wonderful to see our students over the past two weeks involved in a variety of activities that are shaping who they are as learners and who they are becoming as young men and women. With so many more learning opportunities throughout this term, I’m sure our students will continue to grow from strength to strength.
From the Chaplain
Ash Wednesday homily by The Chaplain
Ash Wednesday homily by The Chaplain
Today is Ash Wednesday. And with it comes Lent, 40 days in which we can follow Jesus to the fulness of love and friendship. On Good Friday we will see Jesus giving up his life for us, for you and me. So what can we do to imitate Jesus? Probably we are thinking of giving up certain things. That is great. However, Jesus reminds us today that whatever we decide to do and to give up, it has to be linked to love for God and love for others.
I remember a year 10 boy back in Spain. I was his mentor in a school like Redfield. He was a soccer player and had three training sessions a week and his dad would come to pick him up late in the evening. Once in the car, his dad would try to talk to him. And many times he got a bit annoyed and just would like to go to his phone. Talking to this boy about Lent, he came up with a realisation. In Lent, instead of giving up something he would try to love his father despite his tiredness and annoyance in the car after training sessions because he also realised the love of his father. And it is true that many times it is easier to give up chocolates than trying to overcome tiredness and annoyance and engage in a chat.
The Church teaches us to practice prayer, fasting and almsgiving more intensely in these 40 days.
Let us think about prayer: how can we make our encounters with Jesus in Sunday Mass and in Confession more prayerful?
Fasting: how can we fast from things that damage friendship like gossiping and being judgmental or being on screens too much?
Almsgiving: how can I give more understanding to the people around me?
We finish this homily coming to our Lady. If we walk with her in this time of Lent, we will be able to follow Jesus to the fulness of friendship and love.

Play is the work of children
Play is the work of children

Visiting our Prep children over the last couple of weeks has been a wonderful experience. To observe our young students ‘at play’ and listen to their interactions is joyful, and it is easy to forget that these children are only 4 years of age. Their language is rich and at times funny, to say the least. The well-planned and thoughtful lessons presented by the teachers encourage engagement, as well as a deep level of thinking in our Prep students. If viewed by a stranger, it may appear that the children are simply playing and having fun, but as we know, it is through well-planned and prepared structured activities that learning thrives for our young children. As Jean Piaget stated, ‘Play is the work of children.’
Our Infants children have also settled in beautifully to our school routines.
Having only been at school for 4 weeks, our Year 1 students are displaying wonderful leadership qualities as they support our Kindergarten children with the changes in our playground.
For lunch, our playground is now divided into 4 action-packed play zones:
Zones 1 & 2 are in the back playground and Zones 3 & 4 are in the front playground. The underpinning reason for the changes in our playground arrangement this year is to promote the 'Safe, Respectful Learner' principles.
Classes have been partnered for the term and rotate between zones throughout the week. This allows for smaller groups to play safely whilst building relationships and friendships in a conducive environment.

Thank you
Thank you
We would like to thank Mrs Arrastia, Mrs Anna Jean’s mum, for covering our home readers throughout the holiday break. She covered hundreds of home readers during the break to ensure they were ready for our children to take home.

In year 5 Religion we have been learning about the magnificence of God our father and creator. We have learnt new words like omnipotent and omniscient as attributes of God,
We have also been learning about the order in Creation and our nature and gifts as human persons. God is AWESOME!

Semester 1 Monitors
There was much excitement when the Semester 1 Junior Monitors were announced last week. These girls take on leadership roles in the Primary and help with the smooth running of our school. We rely on each and everyone of them.
Being Positive
Earlier in the week, I received a wonderful reminder from the Big Life Journal company which is an organisation that creates tools and resources that help children develop a Growth Mindset. They suggested a fabulous way to nurture our children’s self-awareness, positivity and joy. The idea is having GLAD conversations to frame the questions we ask our children.
At the end of the day, you and your family can use “GLAD” conversation. Focusing on Gratitude, Learning, Accomplishment, Delight.
Gratitude: One thing you’re grateful for today
Learning: One thing you’ve learned today
Accomplishment: One thing you’ve accomplished today
Delighted: One thing that brought you joy today
What a practical way to assist children to focus on the positives in life!
Generosity in the Lenten Season
The classes in the Junior school are taking part in Caritas’s Initiative called Tapitas. We are encouraging students to ‘buy’ a droplet of water for $5 and the money will go towards initiatives in countries that do not have access to clean water. The child will then decorate their “droplet” and it will form part of a large display in our building.
We also have collection boxes in each class room and the class who raises the most money weekly will enjoy displaying the “Cup of Kindness” trophy in their classroom for the week.

Chef Verb Visits Year 2
Chef Verb Visits Year 2
The Year 2 girls had a special visit from Chef Verb, a famous chef who visited from a 'far away land' to share her world famous recipes. But, unfortunately on Chef Verb's flight to Australia the security x-ray machine wiped all the VERBS from her recipes!
Luckily she trusted some wonderful, intelligent Year 2 mini chefs to help figure out the missing verbs in order to make her famous pancakes for them all to enjoy on Shrove Tuesday.
The girls also focused on adjectives to describe the look, feel of the batter versus the cooked pancake. The girls loved wearing their chef hats, which they have taken home with their pancake recipe to make pancakes with their family.
Verbs have been a focus in Year 2 Grammar lessons, so it was great to highlight the importance of verbs in procedural texts, such as recipes, in a real world context - linked to Shrove Tuesday. The Year 2 girls loved their pancakes, drizzled with maple syrup and devoured together at a picnic.
Thank you so much Mrs Hirsch for such a rich and rewarding learning experience!

Definition:
A place for everything . Keeping my environment well arranged, so I can be effective and reach my full potential.
I am practicing orderliness when I:
· Have a place to put each of my things
· Put my things away in the same place when I am finished with them
· Solve problems step by step
· Have a plan before I start a job
· Create a harmonious space that makes my soul peaceful.

Practical Tips
If you think of it – do it, don’t put it off for another day
Create appropriate times for your activities
Set a timer to keep you on track
Leave a room better than you found it
Have a ‘home’ for all your stuff (piles are not homes!)
Stop a task a few minutes earlier, giving you time to pack away before the next activity
Keep your computer organised – digital photos, files, and downloads quickly clutter up a digital space, much like paper clutters up a physical space
Don’t dump on the table when we walk in – put things away – and push in chairs when you get up from the table.
For older students:
😊 Orderliness is more than organising our stuff
😊 Every area of our life can be in order: our relationships, our priorities, our possessions, time, and responsibilities. Can I give some examples in my own life?
😊 Understanding why something is important is helpful as it strengthens our determination to learn new habits. What do I consider important in my own life?

Design thinking in Technology encourages students to stretch their minds. Building on the work of Guy Claxton we know that the capacity to learn is elastic and there is a good deal of research to show that we need to stretch our learners. Technology studies can set young people up to meet life’s challenges with greater confidence and capacity.

Australian Junior Chess Championships
Australian Junior Chess Championships
During the recent school holidays I had the amazing opportunity to travel down to Melbourne with my coaches and the NSW delegation, to compete in the Australian Junior Chess Championships and be able to represent Australia in the Oceania Chess Zonal. The Australian Junior Chess Championship has not been held since 2020, as a result of COVID and this also marks the first major national tournament I have played since my victory at the NSW Girls State Championships in my division last year. Although I only was able to place in the top 10, I was able to be under the guidance of my coach FIDE Master Yi Liu as well as Grandmaster Max Illingworth, which has allowed me to learn so much from this experience and I am very thankful for this experience. This has been a great improvement from my placing in 2019 in the same event, and I am thankful to OA Grandmaster Ian Roger who enabled me to learn more from this experience by being my first coach at a national event. Meanwhile, I also had the amazing opportunity to represent Australia at the Oceania Chess Zonal to compete alongside my coach Woman Grandmaster Jilin Zhang in the Women’s category. I ended the event with 5 draws, 1 win and 3 losses. Although I only placed in the 30’s many of my games were extremely high quality lasting 4-5 hours per game. My greatest achievement in this event was my first round draw against Woman International Master Narelle Szuveges who was the bronze medalist in the Oceania women’s in 2005, the 1993 Australian girls champion and was a member of team Australia for the 1998 chess olympiad. I look forward to continuing to train for the Oceania Youth and Doeberl Cup taking place in Canberra during the April school holidays. -Renee Pan

⃰NSW Health is waiting on the outcome of a review by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination schedule. International evidence indicates that one dose of HPV vaccine provides equivalent protection to two-dose. If a one dose-schedule is endorsed NSW Health will contact all parents of students who have been consented for two doses of the vaccine and also parents of students who have received one dose of HPV vaccine (to advise that they are up to date and do not require any further doses).

Change to 1-dose HPV Vaccine
Change to 1-dose HPV Vaccine
From February 2023, children in year 7 (aged 12-13) will be offered a single dose course of HPV vaccine at school vaccination clinics. (The Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis booster is also still offered.) Previously, students were offered two doses of the HPV vaccine in the NSW school vaccination program. The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has reviewed recent international evidence and has advised that a single dose of the HPV vaccine gives the same protection as two dose course.
Students in Year 8 who have already received one dose of HPV vaccine but who have missed their second dose will now be considered fully vaccinated and do not require any further doses. An SMS message will be sent to their parent/guardian advising of this.
