Touchdown at Sydney Airport
This week marked a significant occasion as we welcomed the Prelate of Opus Dei, Monsignor Fernando Ocariz, to Sydney as part of his Apostolic Visit to Australia and New Zealand. We are brimming with excitement as we anticipate his visit to Tangara on Wednesday, August 23rd. The preparations for his special visit to our school are well underway, and we are eager to gain insights from his words of wisdom that will further enrich our school's mission and ethos.
Last Thursday, our World Youth Day Pilgrims returned to Sydney after an incredible three-week journey alongside peers who share their passions from around the globe. In his poignant homily to the youth last Sunday, Pope Francis highlighted three verbs of significance: "to shine," "to listen," and "to be unafraid." Pope Francis urged all young individuals to radiate love like Jesus, to attentively discern God's calling, and to courageously bring about change without fear. He emphasised that the world needs the impact of youth, just as the earth needs rain. In light of these powerful messages, let us take time to reflect and consider how we can apply these principles to our own lives. We eagerly await the accounts of our girls, who will undoubtedly share their impactful and unforgettable experiences from World Youth Day.
Congratulations to Tangara Old Girl - Jessica Langrell (Class of 2007)
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Jessica Langrell, now known as Sr Mary Grace, for her momentous entry into the order of the Sisters of Life. On Saturday, 5 August at St Patrick's Cathedral in New York, she made her final profession in the presence of her loved ones, who journeyed from Australia to share in this joyous occasion. Among the attendees were Sr Miriam Assaf, a fellow former Tangara student from the Class of 2009, and Mrs Jacinta Yousif (nee Harb), who also graduated from Tangara with Sr Mary Grace. We look forward to both Sr Mary Grace and Sr Miriam visiting Tangara the next time they are in Australia.
2024 Student Leadership Process
The leadership journey for Year 11 has commenced this term, building upon the foundation laid during their memorable three-day leadership camp last term. The quality of nominations for the Captaincy was truly outstanding, and it was a genuine honour to engage in insightful interviews with each nominee. We extend our congratulations to Natalya Rajakariar, who will serve as our School Captain for 2024, and to Taylor Issa, who will fulfil the role of Vice Captain. These exceptional individuals have been chosen by the Tangara community, with their Year 11 peers and Secondary teachers, who have closely collaborated with them over the past few years. As we move forward, the remaining members of the Leadership team will be unveiled in Week 6, while we eagerly anticipate our Leadership Induction Ceremony in Week 10. With their responsibilities commencing in Term 4 this year, we are enthusiastic about witnessing the new Leadership team's impact and contributions to our school community.
School Survey
Thank you to all the parents who have taken the time to complete our school survey. Your valuable insights and feedback play a crucial role in shaping the future of our school community. Your responses help us understand what we're doing well and where we can make improvements to provide the best possible educational experience for your children. If you haven't had a chance to participate in the survey yet, we encourage you to do so. Your input matters, and together we can work towards making our school an even better place for our students to learn, grow, and thrive. Your voice truly makes a difference!
Trivia Night - And the winners are….
It's clear that the Tangara staff embody both elegance and intelligence! The title of "Best Dressed Team" was rightfully claimed by our dedicated Primary staff, while the coveted 2023 Trivia Trophy found its home with our exceptional Secondary staff. As our charming MC eloquently highlighted, "Tangara parents, rest assured that your daughters are in capable hands!" We extend our sincere gratitude and congratulations to the Tangara Development team for orchestrating a truly unforgettable evening of trivia entertainment. The event raised an impressive $3000, a valuable contribution to our Innovation Fund Project - Yarra Hall. Beyond the financial success, the evening fostered a sense of fun and camaraderie that underscores the spirit of unity that defines the Tangara community.
Tangara needs your support
My sincere gratitude to the families who have demonstrated their generosity by contributing to our crucial 2023 Innovation Project. Recognising that families often have the best intentions, we understand that the commitment to the annual $1000 contribution (fully tax deductible) might have inadvertently slipped your attention. We want to assure you that it's never too late – we encourage and kindly urge you to consider making your contribution at this time. The collective effort of each family's support brings us closer to the realisation of our goal: the enhancement and completion of Yarra Hall, a facility that holds great importance and is extensively utilised. Your participation will significantly contribute to our mission of enriching this space for the benefit of our entire community. Our girls and their families deserve this!

Next 15th of August we will celebrate the Assumption of our Lady. Along with her coronation as Queen of heavens (22nd August), this feast ends the cycle of marian mysteries we celebrate throughout the year.
In order to prepare ourselves for the feast, let us reflect on these words of Pope Benedict XVI:
"Dear brothers and sisters, we are speaking of Mary, but in a certain sense we are also speaking of ourselves, of each one of us: we too are recipients of that immense love which God reserved — of course, in an absolutely unique and unrepeatable way — for Mary. On this Solemnity of the Assumption let us look to Mary: She opens us to hope, to a future full of joy and teaches us the way to achieve it, welcoming in faith: by welcoming her Son with faith; by never losing the friendship with him but letting ourselves be illuminated and guided by his word; by following him every day, even in moments when we feel that our crosses are growing heavy."
Our Lady teaches us a very simple fact, that comes to shine in the Assumption: the Lord is with us, with every single one. When we live in the state of grace, the Light who is Jesus dwells in our hearts. We may not feel it, we may not notice it externally but we welcome Him through faith, letting ourselves be illuminated by his word: "Jesus answered him, If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him(Jn14, 23)." We rely on his Word, not on our feelings. And his presence in our hearts changes everything without changing anything external. When we work, when we enjoy, when we drive, when we play sports, when we get tired or angry, we can truly say: The Lord is with me. And in the midst of our everyday life, we are able to transform everything into prayer with short aspirations: "Lord, give me patience", "Jesus, I am tired, help me to finish my work", "Lord, help not to judge".

100 Days at School Celebration

Prep White, Kindergarten and Year 1 children celebrated the milestone of 100 Days of School. The Infant’s department was turned into an ‘Aged Care Facility’ as teachers and children came dressed as their 100-year-old self. Throughout the day, children were engaged in lots of learning activities including fairy bread making and icing 100 cookies. By the end of the day the teachers were no longer only dressed as 100 years old, but they were feeling every bit of being 100 years of age.

Maths Information Night
Maths Information Night
Thank you to our Kindergarten and Year 1 parents who joined us for the Maths Information Night on Wednesday. It was wonderful to see so many of our parents and have the opportunity to share with them an understanding of the importance of ‘Number Sense’, and how we can encourage and reinforce this important skill and other mathematical concepts in everyday life.

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue we are working on in the Junior School is Respect.
Definition:
Respect means always acting with deep consideration for others and being thoughtful to the feelings, rights or wishes of someone. It can also mean giving them honour or regard because of their position, abilities or relationship to you.
I am practicing respect when I:
· Treat everyone the way I would like to be treated
· Speak courteously to everyone
· Honour the rules of my family, school and country
· Act with the needs, feeling and rights of others in mind
· Show kindness to others
Where does Respect fit?
Love
· Forgiveness
· Compassion
· Empathy
· Charity
· Respect
· Friendliness
· Courtesy
· Kindness
· Patience
· Helpfulness
For older students:
😊If I’m being honest, is my heart/mind always respectful in most areas of my life?
😊Are there any situations where I find it difficult to show respect? How do I handle that?
😊 Are there any incidents of disrespect recently that I need to say sorry for?

Year 2 Narrative Burger Picnic Day
Year 2 Narrative Burger Picnic Day
In English this term, Year 2 have been looking at narratives and learning how to write a good narrative. We started exploring the structure of a narrative and even created our own jingles, raps and rhymes to help us remember the order: ”Orientation”, “Series of Events", “Complication”, ”Resolution” and “Coda”.
To further help us remember the narrative structure and how we as authors can ensure we write juicy stories with meaty content, we linked the structure of a narrative to the layers of a burger. And of course, we made sure to have an authentic experience by looking at, building, and then eating a real burger!
We showcased what happens when one part of the narrative (burger) is missing and the individual importance of each element. This was a powerful and memorable way to highlight how we need all parts of a narrative to make a great story. We then had a picnic lunch enjoying our delicious, juicy burgers!
Thank you to the lovely parent helpers who assisted on the day. We can’t wait to put all we’ve learnt into writing the next chapter of learning!

REAL Self-Respect Versus Self-Satisfaction
REAL Self-Respect Versus Self-Satisfaction

The focus of our last REAL lesson was the difference between self-satisfaction and self-respect. Self-satisfaction is the excessive satisfaction with yourself and your achievements. It’s good to have some self-satisfaction but it’s not so good when it’s extreme because you aren’t able to hear other peoples constructive feedback or advice. You also unable to see opportunities for personal growth and service. On the other hand self-respect means having a healthy pride and confidence in yourself for who you are and striving to behave with honour and dignity. It is also having a humble and realistic understanding of your strengths and weaknesses.
To help us have a real life understanding of these two concepts we watched a short inspirational video about Arthur Boorman’s transformation. Arthur was a veteran who became disabled because of his role as a paratrooper in the Gulf War. Due to his poor mindset and attitude towards his situation, he did not walk for 15 years, which resulted in excessive weight gain. All of the personal trainers he approached rejected him because they thought his mission to walk again was impossible. This didn’t deter him from searching for someone who would help him achieve his end goal. His determination did not stop when he found that person, first it was the mental and emotional work and then it was the physical work. After falling many times, Arthur still got up again, even with his disability. He was proud of himself when he was loosing weight but he also had self-respect to believe he could achieve his goal of becoming healthy and mobile again. Not only did he end up achieving his goal but he was also able to exceed his own expectations by running.
“Just because I can’t do it today, doesn't mean I can’t do it one day”- Arthur Boorman
We can all take something from this quote and apply it to all aspects of our lives. His story teaches us how REAL Self-Respect means living out many character strengths like: Determination, Perseverance, Self-Mastery and Hope.

PARACHUTE SONGS and PERCUSSION PLAY
PARACHUTE SONGS and PERCUSSION PLAY
Our creative and effervescent students in Kindergarten and Year 1 love to combine music and movement. This week our ‘Parachute Play’ helped to channel their energy in imaginative ways.
While holding onto the parachute, the students sang a few traditional songs, such as “The Grand Old Duke of York” and “Row Row Your Boat”, to practise lifting and lowering the parachute in unison and rolling a large ball across the parachute to each other.
In the ‘Popcorn’ song, the parachute was the pot and we mimed adding oil, salt and other more lavish flavourings before switching on the stove. Small cotton balls acted as popcorn, which began to sizzle and pop as the children shook the parachute.
Our Prep students used body percussion to create the sound of thunder and rain, then sang “Rain is Falling Down” in two parts, using scarf movements and rhythmic ostinato on wooden sticks. The students showed their understanding of loud and soft dynamics by accompanying a song on the maracas, hand drums and bells using a simple four beat rhythms.

Year 2 Music Class
Year 2 Music Class
Our Year 2 girls have experimented with different ways to play percussion instruments and created their own music scores using graphic symbols. Some very creative ideas emerged as students found objects at home to create their own musical instruments.
By experimenting with different types of materials, the girls began to understand how their favourite instruments create their unique sound. We discussed the tone quality or timbre of various combinations of instruments. Using their own percussion creations, groups of students performed rhythmic patterns to accompany a song… and so our Year 2 Kitchen Symphony evolved.

AUTHOR VISITS
AUTHOR VISITS
A highlight of every year in the Library is having authors come to visit and speak to the students. While Infants are still to have their visit, we have already had two authors visit to address our Primarygirls.
Sue Whiting enthralled the Yrs 5 and 6 girls on Tuesday, 1 August, explaining how she creates her stories, and how they can create their own. Sue writes wonderful mystery stories for Yrs 5-8 and her books are now flying off the shelves. She even selected four girls in teams to create their own stories using five different random clues. We were very impressed at how creative the teams were
Jess Black visited on Tuesday 8 August, and spoke with Yrs 3 and 4. Jess has written many series for this age group including The Keeper of the Crystals and the Mr. Walker series. She explained how she uses ideas from everyday life and the things she loves to create her stories and encouraged the girls to do the same.
We are looking forward to Aura Parker's visit to Infants and Yr 2 on Monday.
