What a busy term!
In the past two weeks, our students have experienced a rich and diverse array of learning opportunities and activities. Within the classroom, students have actively participated in a wide range of educational experiences. As I've walked through our school, I've had the privilege of witnessing their high level of engagement in various learning endeavours. Whether they are mastering the art of composing a procedure, expressing themselves artistically, conducting experiments in the science lab, creating musical compositions in the music room, showcasing their talents in dramatic performances, or participating in various physical activities during PE, one thing is abundantly clear: the Tangara students eagerly embrace challenges, and their boundless enthusiasm for learning is nurtured by the dedication and expertise of our exceptional teachers. Let’s continue to work together and encourage our children to focus on their goals and commitments so that they finish the term as well as they have started.
Hills Zone Athletics
Congratulations to the outstanding achievements of our Primary Hills Zone Athletics Team, who have secured the Highest Female Team Score! We would like to give special recognition to two exceptional athletes: Felicity Barbero, who claimed the title of 3rd Age Champion for the U10s category, and Clara Mulkeen, who demonstrated her prowess by earning the 3rd Age Champion title for the U11s. It's worth noting that some of these talented girls will be advancing to compete in CIS later this term.
We also wish to commend our Secondary Athletics Team for their admirable representation of Tangara. Congratulations to Mollie Faehrmann, Olivia Siao, and Clare Tanna, who have earned their places in the ACIES competition. Well done, everyone!
State Champion Swimmer - Congratulations Olivia Siau
We extend our congratulations to Olivia Siau, a Year 9 student, for her outstanding achievements at the State Swimming competition last weekend. Olivia secured a silver medal in the 1500m Freestyle event and achieved remarkable rankings in the top 5, 6, 8, and 11 in the 800m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle, 400m Individual Medley, and 200m Butterfly, respectively!
Netball and Basketball Finals - Go Tangara Girls!
In an exhilarating senior girls' netball match against Loreto Normanhurst last week, our girls emerged victorious, securing their spot in the finals against Mount St. Benedict this coming Saturday. Throughout the season, our girls have consistently demonstrated outstanding performance, and we take great pride in their unwavering Tangara spirit. Wishing them the very best in the upcoming grand final this Saturday!
Best wishes to the 12 out of 18 basketball teams that have advanced to the semi-finals this week. We'll be closely following the final results in the coming weeks.
Regardless of the outcomes in the netball and basketball competitions, it's important to recognise the skills, teamwork, and camaraderie that have flourished within our teams throughout the season.
Mock Trial
Our Mock trial team has had a remarkable season, and we extend our congratulations to them. They achieved a 14th place overall in NSW and came incredibly close, missing out on advancing to the next level by just one point. We truly appreciate their exceptional commitment and applaud their consistent progress throughout the season. Special thanks to Mr Simon Diab who generously gave of his time and expertise to prepare the girls throughout the competition.
Service Leadership
Throughout Term 3, our Secondary girls have exemplified the true Tangara spirit of service through various community service initiatives. Some of our Year 11 students dedicated the past 6 weeks to an Intergenerational Program at Anglicare in Castle Hill. This interaction fostered genuine connections and budding friendships, bringing immense joy and zest to the lives of the elderly residents.
Additionally, Tangara girls continued their commitment to community service through participation in the Vinnies Night Van Service, extending care, food, and companionship to those in need. Our students also reached out to Sydney's refugee community, preparing nutritious meals for families in emergency accommodation and refugee centres in Western Sydney.
Notably, our Primary girls have been actively engaged in activities designed to inspire them to take action within the school, at home, and in the broader community to raise awareness and address the needs of others. Some of our Primary students represented Tangara at a social action expo this week, returning with newfound enthusiasm and promising ideas. We look forward to some new initiatives that will continue to promote servant leadership, a hallmark of our students.
Bishop’s Award for Excellence - Congratulations Gabrielle Tan, Year 12
Annually, the Bishop of the Parramatta Diocese recognises outstanding students from each school with the “Award for Excellence”. This esteemed accolade is bestowed upon a Year 12 student who embodies an exemplary role model for their peers, serving as a source of inspiration and motivation within their school community, particularly in the expression of the Catholic life of our schools. I am delighted to announce that this year's deserving recipient of this award is Gabrielle Tan, recognised for her exceptional dedication and contributions as Tangara's 2023 Community Service Captain. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Gabrielle, as well as to her parents who have nurtured and instilled in her the beautiful virtue of service and commitment to strive for excellence.
Coming up
As we anticipate the upcoming events, we're filled with excitement to honour our students' accomplishments at the Teddy Bear's Picnic and the Principal's Morning Tea. We extend our best wishes to the following year groups embarking on unique out-of-the-classroom learning experiences: Year 6, who will explore Canberra, Year 5, as they venture to Bathurst, and Year 8, ready for their outdoor camp in Kincumber. Additionally, we eagerly look forward to formally introducing our 2024 Captains during the Leadership Induction Ceremony. We'll also take the time to express our gratitude, acknowledge, and celebrate the remarkable journey of our graduating class of 2023. After these events, we'll be well-prepared to enjoy a well-deserved break during Term 3!

Sacrifice is a word that comes with a kind of negative perception. It is many times linked to loss. Out of sacrifice we give up something, we stop doing something, we endure something we don't like. That is why we don't like this word. It is only in Love and through Love that we realise that behind a sacrifice there is someone being loved. And that is what makes sacrifice meaningful.
Pope Francis explained to many young people at Lisbon last August the meaning of sacrifice, that is, the meaning of Jesus' Cross:
"Jesus’ journey is this: God going out of himself in order to walk by our side. Often we hear at Mass that, “the Word became flesh and lived among us”. Do you remember? The Word became a man and walked by our side; and he does this out of love, out of love. The Cross which accompanies every World Youth Day is the icon or image of this journey. The Cross is the greatest sign of the greatest love, the love with which Jesus wants to embrace our lives.Ourlives? Yes! Your lives, the life of every one of you, each of us. Jesus walks for us. We must all say it: “Jesus undertakes this journey for me, in order to give his life for me”. And no one has greater love than those who give their lives for their friends, than those who give their lives for others. Do not forget this: no one has greater love than those who give their lives. Jesus taught us this; which is why, when we look at the Crucified Christ, though it be painful and difficult, we see the beauty of the love that gives its life for each one of us. A very devout believer once said something that struck me very much: “Lord, as I contemplate your terrible sufferings, I find myself able to believe in love”. Lord, as I contemplate your terrible sufferings, I find myself able to believe in love."
Let us enter with Jesus in this journey of love and self-giving so that Jesus can help us to brace sacrifice out of Love for Him and for our neighbors.

Our children have been busy with their learning this term, with our learning spaces both in and outside of the classroom. We have been particularly fortunate this term as the weather has been conducive for lots of learning activities to occur outside in the fresh air.
One aspect of our children’s learning is when they collaborate and work with others. Working with others is an important skill as it teaches children from a young age how to engage with others respectfully. It's a great opportunity to collaborate with peers and best use each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
Group work helps to naturally foster the following life skills:
- Communication skills
- Leadership skills
- Self-assurance
- Tolerance
- Patience
- Confidence
- Perseverance
With only 2 weeks of school remaining for this term, we will be encouraging the students to eat well and have early bedtimes to ensure they are bright and ready for busy days of learning and playing. As we know, ‘Play is a Child’s Work’.

Characterization through Sound
The Prep students have been learning about high and low sounds (pitch) and fast and slow rhythms (tempo). The past two weeks we have discussed the characters in two well-known fables, and explored sounds on percussion instruments to represent the characters in the stories.
In ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’, we used fast and slow rhythms on the egg shakers and guiros to represent the hare and tortoise running the race. In ‘The Lion and the Mouse’ we used high and low sounds on triangles and large maracas to represent the voices of the mouse and lion. The children have also loved learning their new song, ‘My God is so Great’, which they sing with strong actions and great enthusiasm.

Grandparents Day
The sun was shining, the sky was blue and there were smiling faces everywhere! Thank you for attending both the Infants and Primary Grandparent’s Days. It was a true celebration of family life. The children were so happy to have you visit and loved the opportunity to show you around our beautiful school and perform for you.
Miss Tropea
We welcomed our very own Miss Tropea to address our Primary Assembly last week. Miss Tropea spoke to the girls about her personal journey, plan and commitment to compete in the Gold Coast Marathon in July. It was a story that demonstrated many virtues the girls strive to live.
Social Action Expo
I was lucky enough to accompany eleven Yr 4 and 5 girls to the IPSHA Social Action Expo at the Kings School this week. We were surrounded by children and teachers from many schools who have an interest in promoting kindness, caring for others and taking action if they see a need. We continually encourage our students to look outwards to the needs of others. Please look out for photos and reflections from our girls in the next edition.
Up and Coming Excursions
Girls in Yr 5 and Yr 6 are looking forward to their excursions to Bathurst and Canberra respectively. These experiences are so valuable and consolidate the information the girls have been leaning about in History this term. Please encourage your daughters to show their appreciation and gratitude to their teachers for organising the excursions.

I am practising courtesy when I:
I am practising courtesy when I:

The virtue we have been working on in the Junior School is: Courtesy.
Definition:
Courtesy is treating people considerately and thinking about what is good and pleasant for them, not just us. It means seeking to make others comfortable and smooth over conflicts and awkwardness. Being courteous prevents rudeness and arguing. It helps a home or a school run more smoothly because people aren’t selfish.
I am practising courtesy when I:
- Show others that I respect and value them
- Remember to treat elders, parents, teachers and children politely.
- Think about how my actions affect others
- Eat, speak and move more graciously
- Greet people with a smile and kindness
Where does Courtesy fit?
·Love
·Forgiveness
·Compassion
·Empathy
·Charity
·Respect
·Friendliness
·Courtesy
·Kindness
·Patience
·Helpfulness
For older students:
😊 How many people do I think about when I make decisions?
😊 Is it worth inconveniencing myself to make someone else’s life easier? Why/why not?
😊 What is an area where I haven’t been very courteous lately? How can I change that?

5 Navy
5 Navy
Learning in 5Navy has continued to flourish with all Year 5Navy girls embracing all learning opportunities with a positive energy that encompasses many learning styles. One of the many highlights was meeting Monsignor Ocariz. Year 5 eagerly awaited with balloons in hand to welcome him with open hands.
Some of the opportunities that have opened doors for us include.
An opportunity at a school incursion to visit The Planetarium where girls got to enter a 3D space world inside an enormous fully enclosed dome tent. They learnt about star constellations in our southern skies and how the Greek Gods helped named these patterns of stars in our night skies. The girls were mesmerized by 360-degree views of the sky above us and how the phases of the moon work.
In the month of August, we learnt about the super blue moon that was only visible from Australia on August 31 for the last time until 2029. The term ‘super blue moon’ refers to a blue moon that occurs at the same time as a supermoon. The term “blue moon” refers to the rare occurrence when two full moons appear during the same month, not the moon’s colour.
In Math’s we studied as part of the measurement and geometry strands the concepts involved with plotting co-ordinates on a cartesian plane. Longitude and latitude and degrees when looking at google maps.
We designed a 2D floor plan for a new shopping Centre named after us – so that customers could move around the Centre by following a map. We also designed treasure maps using grid paper and had to give specific directions to find the buried treasure. Google maps and location services were used to locate facilities and built environments around our school location within a radius of a certain diameter.
We had fun exploring angles by making human angles on the floor in our classroom with our friends, discovering the properties of different sized angles.
History saw us learning about the exploration of gold in Australia. How our economy changed because of this mineral, which is one of the heaviest minerals. We studied the Eureka Stockade began as miners were fighting for their rites to not pay a monthly fee to the government. This resulted in freedom and democracy for our country with the beginning of the miners’ rite. More information to follow in 5Rust news after our return from the Bathurst Goldfields experience.
We compared settlers lives to our own homes today in the 21st century. Year 5 is very excited about our very full and long day excursion to the Bathurst Goldfields on September 15th in Week 9.
In Science and Technology, we studied the properties of solids, liquids and gases and got our hands dirty whilst participating in many and varied outdoor experiments that looked at various properties of changing substances.
We spent many sessions as grade in Year 5 learning some actions and creating a dramatic presentation of Westlife’s song – You Raise me up for Grandparents Day. We wanted to show our love and gratitude for the important role grandparents have in our lives.
Our wonderful classroom was open for parents and grandparents on August 25th. So, we could show off our classroom displays, and the many aspects of learning shown in our exercise books to our parents and grandparents. The girls were proud to show some of their learning to our visitors.

Year 10 wheelchair basketball incursion
Year 10 wheelchair basketball incursion

In PE, our year 10 students are currently learning about games for people with a disability. On 1 September, they participated in a wheelchair sports program on Tangara’s outdoor courts. The students began by listening to a talk by a man names Stephan who was born with spina bifida and as a result, now lives his life in a wheelchair. Stephan talked about what his life is like without the use of his legs and explained some initiatives that have been introduced by our government to assist those living with a disability in becoming more independent. He also explained various sporting opportunities available to those living with a disability. The students were engaged by his passion for wheelchair sports. The students were then presented with an opportunity to play wheelchair basketball which was a lot of fun! They now understand some of the challenges faced by those living in a wheelchair and were inspired by Stephan’s positive outlook on life in general.
