Parent Engagement in Learning
It was great to see so many of our parents at the first KPF a couple of weeks ago. Thank you for supporting and engaging in your child’s learning. It is really important to start the year with a strong parent-school partnership. There is so much research to show the positive impact of healthy collaboration between parents and school: better academic outcomes, increased school attendance, higher graduation rates, improved behaviour and better social and emotional well being. The first KPF was a great opportunity for us all to “get on the same page”. I encourage you to continue this engagement through the various opportunities to be involved in your child’s education - parent teacher interviews, mentor meetings, information evenings, FEA parenting courses, Mum’s Cafe, volunteering, attending school events and much more.
Lent - “Slow down and pause”
Pope Francis really has the gift of expressing deep ideas with very few words. “Slow down, then, and pause! He beautifully articulates the essence of Lent, urging us to take the time to embrace prayer, almsgiving, and fasting as a path toward spiritual renewal. Lent, he reminds us, is a sacred time to refocus our hearts on God, releasing ourselves from the burdens of worldly attachments and vanities. As we engage in mentoring conversations with our students this term, we emphasise the importance of not only giving something up but also taking something up - such as prayer, visiting our Lord in the Chapel, or helping out at home - as meaningful resolutions for this season of reflection and growth.
The importance of participating in Sport
Media attention has recently focused on the benefits of sport for young people, with some studies suggesting “active children do better at school”. While the benefits of physical activity are widely understood, a new study reveals links between children's participation in sport and higher academic performance. In a study conducted at the University of Sydney, research showed children who take part in sport over the longer term are likely to see benefits including better NAPLAN and end-of-school results, greater attention and memory, lower absenteeism and higher chances of attending university.
Lead author Dr Katherine Owen says the results show how important it is for children to participate in sports. "Team sports really builds social connections and peer bonding and friendships which are, and like a really strong sense of belonging which is really important for kids and I think that's why those specific academic benefits come from team sports because they're more motivated to go to school and they're more likely to want to go school to see their friends and just having that sense of belonging is so important for those specific outcomes."
Parents can help their children to be physically active in a number of ways, including:
Lead by example – be physically active yourself.
Make sure that some family outings offer opportunities for physical activity, such as playing sport together.
Encourage your child to walk or ride their bicycle for short trips, rather than rely on you to drive them.
Support your child’s efforts in sport. Make sure you’re there at each game, cheering them on from the sidelines.
Set time limits on sedentary activities like computer games and television.
Consult with your child’s school on ways to encourage greater participation in sports and physical activity.
This is a timely reminder that sport at Tangara is compulsory for all students in Years 3-10 for at least one semester (2 Terms) each year. The physical, mental and social benefits for our children are crucial to their holistic development. Please contact Mrs Benson alison.benson@tangara.nsw.edu.auto find out more about sporting opportunities available at Tangara.
Swimming Carnival, Cross Country and Debating
The Swimming Carnival last Tuesday was a fantastic day. There was a very energetic atmosphere, with plenty of cheering from the four Houses, led by our very enthusiastic House Captains, Vice Captains and our Year 12s. It was great to see them lead by example. We also had great participation in the pool, including a relay race with a team of Dads, Mums, and students - in this case it was youthfulness that triumphed over experience! We look forward to announcing the overall winners at our School Assemblies next week.
Now we move into Cross Country season. The last couple of weeks I have watched from my desk as students run past my window, huffing and puffing. I really admire their determination!
ISDA Debating kicked off last Friday night. Our girls competed against Newington College and are to be congratulated on winning 4 out of the 8 debates.Tomorrow night we debate St Aloysius at Tangara. I know the girls love a supportive audience, so everyone is welcome!
It’s been such a privilege to see our students in action in the first four weeks of Term 1. Their enthusiasm and dedication has been truly inspiring. Remember, parental engagement is key to nurturing this spirit of growth and achievement. Your involvement strengthens our community and empowers our students to reach their fullest potential. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in our shared mission of educational and personal excellence.

Last week Lent started off. The tradition of the Catholic Church has always taught us to live this time according to certain practices. I think it is good for all of us to refresh them in order to prepare ourselves better for Easter.
- On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, abstinence from meat is to be observed by those who have completed their fourteenth year of age. Those who are aged between 18 and 60 are to fast on these days.
- On all other Fridays of Lent the law of the common practice of penance is fulfilled by performing any one of the following:
2.1. Prayer – for example, Mass attendance; family prayer; a visit to a church or chapel; reading the Bible; making the Stations of the Cross; praying with Mary and the Saints, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the Rosary, or in other ways;
2.2. Self-denial – for example, not eating meat; not eating sweets or desserts; giving up entertainment to spend time with the family; limiting food and drink so as to give to the poor in one’s own country and elsewhere; limiting screen time on social media, or in other ways;
2.3. Helping others – for example, special attention to someone who is poor, sick, elderly, lonely or overburdened or feeling isolated from our Church community, or in other ways.
- Fasting is also observed on Good Friday and if possible, on Holy Saturday until the Easter Vigil.
- Each of the faithful is obliged to receive Holy Communion at least once a year. This is done between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday (26 May 2024), unless for a good reason it is done at another time during the year. This is the so-called Pascal Precept.
- All the faithful who have reached the age of discretion (seven years old) are obliged to confess their grave sins at least once a year.
Fr John and myself are always at your service if you need some guidance during Lent or eventually receive the sacrament of Penance. Confessions are available for parents anytime of the day but especially during drop off time (8.00-8.30am), before and after Mass (12.15pm) and pick up time (3.10-3.30pm)

Play Is The Work Of Children
Play Is The Work Of Children

It is a joy to spend time with our Prep children and observe them at ‘play’. Their laughter and interactions with one another is joyful to say the least. It is easy to forget they are only four years of age. Their language is rich, funny and often full of wisdom. The well planned and thoughtful lessons which the teachers present encourage not only engagement but a deep level of thinking for our Prep students. If viewed by a stranger, it may appear that the children are simply playing and having fun but as we know it is through the well planned and prepared structured activities that young children learn and thrive. As Jean Piaget stated, ‘Play is the work of children’.

Kindergarten at Play
Kindergarten at Play
It’s hard to believe we are only at the end of Week 4, as our Infants children have settled in beautifully.
Our Year 1 students are displaying wonderful leadership qualities as they support our kindergarten children with the changes in our playground.
Our playground for lunch is divided into four action packed play zones.
Zones 1 & 2 are in the back playground and Zones 3 & 4 are in the front playground.
The underpinning reason for the different zones in our playground is to promote Safe, Respectful Learners.
Classes have been partnered for the term and rotate between zones throughout the week. This allows for smaller groups to play safely whilst building relationships and friendships in a conducive environment.

Safe, Respectful, Learners
We are learning to be Safe, Respectful Learners both in the classroom and out in the playground. Each class has discussed and shared ideas of what makes a Safe, Respectful Learner.
Lent
Lent
As we enter the Lenten season, we are once again inviting our students to take part in an initiative by Caritas Australia. Children are invited to bring in $5 to buy a water droplet, which will be added to our large “Tapitas Wall Display”. This money will be donated to those communities who are without clean drinking water.
We are also having a Gold Coin Colouring-In competition for our ‘artists in residence’. This competition will close on Friday 22 March and our Prep, Kindergarten and Year 1 winning artists will be announced Thursday 28 March. The colouring-in page will be sent home in your child’s plastic pocket. Those children wishing to participate are to return their colouring- in with a gold coin. All money raised will also go to Project Compassion.
Birthday Celebrations
Birthday Celebrations
We wish all our Birthday children a very happy day and wonderful year ahead!
Please only send cupcakes or small treats for your child’s class. We appreciate the excitement and kindness of sharing birthday treats with the whole grade; however it can become difficult to distribute. We also ask that you do not send ice blocks as this lovely treat takes time out of the children’s learning.

Keeping Our Children Safe
Keeping Our Children Safe
In the interest of safety, all children from Prep to Year 1 must be collected by a parent or approved adult during the school day. Children will not be released to older siblings. Please submit a Leave Early Departure Note via Engage Parent Portal.

Four Weeks so far
What a huge four weeks we have had! We celebrated Tangara's birthday, a beautiful Ash Wednesday Mass, the Swimming Carnival, the first KPF of the year and Open Day to name a few. Although there have been many happy distractions, it has also been business as usual in the Junior School. All classes have worked through various assessment that provide the teachers valuable information to assist in tailoring their programs.
Shrove Tuesday
Our Year 2 students celebrated Shrove Tuesday in style with a visit from Chef Verb and Mr Verb. What lucky girls to have such creative teachers! Please enjoy the article elsewhere in the Rust and Navy.
Monitors
During our Assembly last week Mrs Sakr presented our Semester 1 Monitors with their badges. We congratulate these girls on their leadership positions and will be relying on them to work together to support the running of the Junior School.
I’m a Tangara Girl Display
The next frame in our beautiful new display states I’m a Tangara Girl: I look after my school and my belongs. This is a continual focus for our students. We always encourage the children to take responsibility for their belongings and treat our school property with respect. A reminder to please label all belongings so they can be easily returned if misplaced.
Open Day
Well done to our 6N students who were fabulous guides during Open Day on Wednesday. They were wonderful ambassadors and spoke so beautifully about Tangara. Next semester is is 6Rs turn to be Open Day guides.

Art in the Junior School
Art in the Junior School
Inspired by Picasso, Year 6 have created self portraits in his abstract style, focusing on line and colour.
While Year 5 have been inspired by Pointillist George Seurat to create birds on watercolour backgrounds.
Well done girls!

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue we are studying in Junior School is Orderliness.
Definition:
A place for everything . Keeping my environment well arranged, so I can be effective and reach my full potential.
I am practicing orderliness when I:
·Have a place to put each of my things
·Put my things away in the same place when I am finished with them
·Solve problems step by step
·Have a plan before I start a job
·Create a harmonious space that makes my soul peaceful
Synonyms:
Self Mastery - Orderliness
Self discipline Determination
Focus Perseverance
Persistence Stickability
Practical Tips
If you think of it – do it, don’t put it off for another day
Create appropriate times for your activities
Set a timer to keep you on track
Leave a room better than you found it
Have a ‘home’ for all your stuff (piles are not homes!)
Stop a task a few minutes earlier, giving you time to pack away before the next activity.
Keep your computer organised – digital photos, files, and downloads quickly clutter up a digital space, much like paper clutters up a physical space.
Don’t dump on the table when we walk in – put things away – and push in chairs when you get up from the table.
For older students:
😊 Orderliness is more than organising our stuff.
😊 Every area of our life can be in order: our relationships, our priorities, our possessions, time, and responsibilities. Can I give some examples in my own life?
😊 Understanding why something is important is helpful as it strengthens our determination to learn new habits. What do I consider important in my own life?
Year 2 Pancake Making
Year 2 Pancake Making
Last Tuesday the Year 2 girls had a special visit from famous chefs Mr and Mrs Chef Verb. They visited Tangara from a ‘faraway land’ to share their world famous pancake recipe. But, unfortunately on their flight to Australia the security x-ray machine wiped all the VERBS from their recipes! Luckily they trusted some wonderful, intelligent mini chefs ( 2N and 2R) to help figure out the missing verbs in order to cook their famous pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. The girls also focused on adjectives to describe the look, feel and smell of the batter versus the cooked pancake. The girls loved wearing their chef hats, which they took home with their pancake recipe.
Verbs have been a focus in grammar, so it was great to highlight the importance of verbs in procedural texts such as recipes in a real world context - linked to Shrove Tuesday and with a treat to enjoy.
The children enjoyed helping the Chefs make the pancakes and loved having a pancake picnic on Shrove Tuesday. We had lots of requests for seconds, but interestingly no one was keen to eat the pancake that was flipped too high and hit the ceiling!
We look forward to lots of special days like this in Year 2, making learning memorable.

How Musical Engagement Boosts Cognitive Health
How Musical Engagement Boosts Cognitive Health

Following Mrs. Roh's insightful music seminar for Tangara parents and students, I read a study exploring the link between musical experience and cognitive function. As a school that takes pride in our extensive music program, it's wonderful to find research that underscores the benefits of such endeavours.
Here are the key takeaways from the study:
- Individuals with a background in music displayed enhanced memory and executive function compared to those with limited or no musical involvement.
- Among the participants, current amateur musicians exhibited the highest cognitive performance.
- Singing, especially in choirs, was linked to improved executive function.
- The study suggests that ongoing engagement in musical activities might contribute to brain health as we age
These findings underscore the cognitive and social advantages of learning an instrument or participating in choir, indicating the value of pursuing such activities throughout life.
Remember, it's never too late to sing, learn an instrument or perform in a music ensemble. If you're interested in learning more about our school ensembles, private tuition options, or upcoming performance opportunities, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at musicacademy@tangara.nsw.edu.au

Busy in the Library!
We have really enjoyed seeing the girls making good use of the Library, both for study and for fun at lunchtime! The Board Games are especially popular.
Last week was Library Lovers' Day and we marked the week by running a competition, Guess the Missing Word. We blanked out a word in the title of various books, and the girls had to fill in the blank! Thanks to the 42 girls who entered and our 12 winners!! Claire Cabela was our grand prize winner, as we raffled off the prize among the winners.
In Primary, we are embracing the Book Week theme, Reading is Magic. A new display has gone up, inspired by the Enid Blyton series, The Magic Faraway Tree. Each term the tree will be visited by a different "land". This term it's the Land of Toys.
Happy reading, everyone!

Meet the School Vice Captain
Meet the School Vice Captain
Meet the School Vice Captain
My name is Taylor Issa and I am the Vice School Captain for 2024.
My journey with Tangara started only a few years ago, yet I now feel like I have always belonged in this beautiful faith oriented community. Tangara has been an extension of my family life. Growing up surrounded by cousins and siblings, I see this reflected on the playground daily.
The wide range of extracurricular activities provided have helped me to further enjoy my time at the school. I encourage all the girls , especially those who are new to Tangara, to participate in as many activities as they can comfortably handle. I have personally tried public speaking, debating and singing in the contemporary ensembles but my absolute all time favourite was mock trial which further ignited my love for justice.
I also enjoyed playing futsal, tennis and kickboxing and discovered that whether it is playing the sport or supporting friends as they try their best. I will always treasure the memories we created together.
Currently, along with a few of my peers, I am excited to be sharing our faith with some of our junior girls through catechist classes run at lunch. I enjoy the going to the chapel each morning.
My favourite novel is “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. This novel has taught me not to judge a book by its cover and to persevere through hard times. When I first attempted to read it, I was captured by the innocence of the characters and the central theme of justice which is a cause I am passionate about. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. This quote resonates with me and I often find myself trying to walk in my friend's shoes so that I can be a empathetic and supportive friend.
This year, alongside the leadership team, we are trying to walk in the Tangara girl’s shoes and provide initiatives that will create positive lasting memories. Our motto ‘Raise the Bar' is to encourage all girls to persevere to achieve their personal best, despite all the different challenges and obstacles that they may face. We are happy to help, please reach out.
In the coming weeks the Captains will be introducing many new initiatives for a range of talents. We welcome any ideas or feedback that you might have. We look forward to sharing many beautiful memories together throughout 2024.
God bless,
Taylor Issa
Co-Curricular Activities
da Vinci Decathlon
da Vinci Decathlon
I am very excited to announce that Tangara School for Girls will once again be competing in the da Vinci Decathlon, which will he held at Knox Grammar School in May.
What is it?
The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy.
The da Vinci Decathlon began in 2002 as an exciting offshoot of the very successful da Vinci Program for gifted and talented students at Knox. The Decathlon is designed to celebrate the academic gifts of Australian youth by providing a stimulating and challenging competition run in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon.
When is the competition?
14 May 2024 – Year 7 & 8 – Tuesday
15 May 2024 – Years 9-11 – Wednesday
16 May 2024 – Years 5 & 6 Thursday
What is the theme?
How can my daughter participate?
da Vinci is open to all students in Years 5-11 who are willing to commit to one lunch time training session a week, outlined below:
How will the teams be selected?
As only 8 students from each year group can be selected, there is a very strict selection criteria and attendance at all training sessions does not guarantee your daughter a spot on the team. Students will be selected at the end of the term, and outlined below are several of the criteria that will be used to choose the teams:
- Commitment to the training sessions (one lunchtime a week- Monday for secondary and Tuesday for primary)
- Completion of weekly homework tasks (for high school girls 7-12)
- Teamwork during the training sessions
- Demonstrating high expectations during the school day e.g. wearing uniform with pride and completing all classwork and homework to a high standard
- Demonstrating the Tangara values of faith, hope, charity, justice, wisdom, fortitude and temperance
Your daughter was informed of all of the above during a briefing session on Thursday 15 February and we had an overwhelming amount of students turn up to our first training session on the theme of Engineering. If your daughter has any questions they can contact the relevant coordinator below:
7-12 da Vinci Coordinator: Danielle Lazaris: danielle.lazaris@tangara.nsw.edu.au
5-6 da Vinci Coordinator: Keeley Midei: keeley.midei@tangara.nsw.edu.au
