Parent Engagement and Student Success
Parent engagement is an important indicator of student achievement and success. At Tangara, we take our partnership seriously. Parenting is your most important job, and you can never stop learning. Our Key Parent Functions are an excellent opportunity to help you continue to grow in your parenting skills. Given the alarming rise in adolescent mental health issues linked to social media and smartphone use, tonight's KPF is especially timely. Please join us tonight at 7:30 pm in Yarra Hall for our Term 2 KPF. You don’t want to miss this great opportunity to learn from a respected presenter from the Cyber Safety Project about how we can help our children navigate the online world safely and responsibly. This is an essential must for us all!
Student Achievements
What an amazing two weeks it has been! Once again, our Tangara students have proven that with fortitude and perseverance, they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
Congratulations to our large squad of Cross Country Hills Zone competitors, with girls from Years 2-11 representing Tangara. It was a fantastic day, with many girls achieving their personal best and two students progressing to the next level at AICES. A special mention goes to Clare Tanna, who came 2nd, and Olivia Siau, who came 3rd in their age groups.
Both the Junior and Senior Primary Basketball teams triumphed this week at the annual Northwest Primary School Challenge, taking home the winning trophies. The students showed incredible teamwork, athleticism, and skill in true Tangara spirit. Congratulations to both teams!
Last week, our Primary and Secondary students participated in the da Vinci Decathlon, an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of students. Congratulations to our Year 8 team, who placed 3rd out of 78 in the Art and Poetry category.
Congratulations also to the following Year 10 students who participated for the first time in the Ethics Olympiad: Evelyn Sheppard, Surin Jung, Ruby Vassallo, Marina Diab, and Andrea Villafano. The Ethics Olympiad provides students with a creative vehicle for developing skills in communication, critical thinking, and respectful discourse while dealing with important and interesting ethical issues. Our students did very well, ranking 8th in NSW, a commendable achievement for Tangara’s first time in the competition.
We wish all our students from Years 5-11 the best of luck as they commence their mid-year exams over the next two weeks. As many students were reminded at assembly this week, improvement and excellence require pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones, feeling some discomfort, putting in extra hours, and making sacrifices to achieve our goals. Let's be intentional about what we want to accomplish, set clear goals, and strive to achieve our personal best over the next two weeks.
Open Day Success
Due to overwhelming demand and interest in our beautiful school, yesterday we hosted another successful Open Day with over 200 attendees. I often ask parents what impressed them most on Open Day, and the majority of parents comment on how impressed they were with our guides—our Year 6, 9, and 10 students. They noted that our girls are articulate, confident, and demonstrate a genuine love for their school. They also noticed the Tangara difference, pointing out that our school radiates a warm and calm atmosphere, with happy students and staff in a professional environment. Thank you to each of you for being great ambassadors of our school.
Looking ahead
Is your child in Year 5 or 6? Do you want to learn more about Tangara’s Secondary School? I invite you to join me and members of our School Executive next Wednesday 29 May at 8:45-10:00am in the Library Seminar Room to learn more about our academic program, extracurricular opportunities, service, leadership, and more. If you are interested in attending please register HERE. We look forward to sharing the exciting opportunities that await your daughter in Secondary.
I also extend an invitation to each of our families to join us for our annual Eucharistic Procession on Thursday, June 6. Please come and pray with us for all our personal and communal intentions.

Next week is a big week in High school: our students are sitting their Half Year exams and Year 11 has their assessment block. It is a week of hard study, stress and uncertainty. And parents are part of this experience too. It is important that parents expect their daughters to fulfill their duty but at the same time they also should be a guide that brings peace to their kids. It is important that kids get the message that they are loved beyond their performance and that their parents are a source of support and encouragement.
In words of Saint Josemaria:
"Parents can, and should, be a great help to their children. They can open new horizons for them, share their experiences and make them reflect, so they do not allow themselves to be carried away by passing emotional experiences. They can offer them a realistic scale of value. Sometimes they can help with personal advice; on other occasions they should encourage their children to seek other suitable people such as a loyal and sincere friend."
Parents can offer a realistic scale of value in which not everything is about academics and performance expectations. The effort and the love shown in study are as important as the mark. It is important to keep doing the home chores and being present in family meals. All the work and study has to be placed on the altar on Sunday Mass as a sign of love for the Lord. Prayer is to be expected also during exams so that they know themselves accompanied by Jesus all the time.

May Pilgrimage
May is a special month which the Church dedicates to Our Lady, the Mother of God. It is a beautiful time to show our love for her. Each of the Infants classes have made a pilgrimage and said the Rosary or part of the Rosary at one of the statues or shrines at Tangara.
Year 1 Mass
Last Wednesday, Year 1 celebrated Mass with their friends and family. This was a beautiful and prayerful occasion. Following Mass, students and parents enjoyed morning tea together in the Infants playground, where there were lots of smiles and special treats.
National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 22 May, Tangara joined over 2 million children with National Simultaneous Storytime. With other children throughout Australia and overseas we listened to the wonderful story ‘Bowerbird Blues’ written and illustrated by Aura Parker.
‘National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

Infants Sports Day
Our Infants Sports Day is fast approaching. Our K-2 students are keen and excited for the big day.
You are welcome to be part of our Infants Sports Day as our students participate in fun and energetic activities, learning how valuable it is to 'have a go' and that it's not about winning, but having fun.

News from Year 1 Silver
News from Year 1 Silver
It was lovely to welcome Year 1 Silver children back to school for term 2. We have settled back into our routine wonderfully and are ready to learn!
We started this term off by learning about ANZAC Day in English and history. We learnt that it is a special Remembrance Day when we thank all the people who, over 100 years ago, bravely fought in a big war to save our country.
We learnt that the red poppy is used as a symbol for remembering soldiers that died in the war. In commemoration of this meaningful day, 1 Silver children created beautiful artworks called ‘A Field of Poppies’.
In Mathematics, we have been learning about 2D shapes, 3D shapes and place values. The children have enjoyed playing many hands-on game-based activities covering these concepts.
In our GIVE lessons, we have been learning about what kindness means so we can be kind to others. We especially had fun performing our assembly item on the virtue of kindness, dancing to the song ‘Give a Little Kindness’. We learnt that kindness means showing that you care about people and living things.
We are having a great start to term 2 in 1 Silver!

Excursion Time
Both Year 3 and Year 4 have enjoyed attending excursions in the last two weeks. There are so many benefits to school excursions. They provide another dimension to class based learning. Leaving the campus gives children an opportunity to spend time with each other in a new environment without the structure of the classroom. A big thank you to the teachers for organising these experiences and to the parent volunteers for accompanying the children.
Rosary Pilgrimages
It has been a pleasure to see the growing number of bouquets of flowers in the chapel in front of the image of Our Lady. There is something very special about giving flowers to our Heavenly Mother and the children have been praying for all the intension of our entire school community.
Creative Play
We value the role of free play during lunchtime as an essential component of our students' overall development. Free play provides children with the opportunity to explore their interests, engage in creative activities, and build social skills. At any one moment in our playground we have Uno games being played, colouring in activities, balls of all shapes and sizes bouncing around, handball games, roleplay games such as shops and schools.
Information Session for Parents
Parents of students in Year 4, 5 and 6 have been offered the opportunity to come to an information session on Human Love given by Dr Roberta Augimeri on Tuesday 4 June at 7.00pm. The aim of this talk is to assist parents in their discussion with daughters on the topics of human sexuality and love. We hope you can join us.
WriteOn Competition
All students from Year 1 to Year 6 are invited to participate in the NSW Government 2024 WriteOn Competition. This is an opportunity to flex creative writing muscles by writing an imaginative text using a stimulus provided. All students who are interested can ask their teacher for more details.
da Vinci Decathlon
Year 5 and 6 enjoyed participating in the da Vinci decathlon at Knox last week. Congratulations to the team who represented Tangara so beautifully.
Debating Team – Octos Round
Congratulations to our Year 5 Primary B Debating Team who made it to the Octos Round at Barker College last week. The Topic of the Debate was Student Leadership Positions should be Elected by Student Votes. This was a great opportunity for our girls to compete, practice their debating skills and represent our school. We are very proud of these girls and thank their coach, Mrs McFarlane for her dedication, care and skill.

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

In the junior school the virtue we have been working on is Fairness.
Definition:
Fairness means understanding the difference between right and wrong. It means being reasonable, making sure that people are treated equally. We live in a society where our actions help or hinder others, therefore we have a duty to give others our best.
I am practicing fairness when I:
· Treat others as I wish to be treated
· Play by the rules
· Take turns
· Think how my actions will affect others
· Share with others fairly
For older students:
😊 What is my reaction when I feel like something is unfair?
😊 How do I accept the consequences of my bad actions?
😊 Can the idea of justice vary from country to country? How so?

Year 3 Excursion State Library
Year 3 Excursion State Library
Last Friday Year 3 were treated to a wonderful excursion to the State Library of NSW to watch the performance of Incredibilia! Inspired by the work of celebrated children’s author Libby Hathorn, Incredibilia tells the story of two best friends as they embark on an imaginative journey, crossing super-hot deserts, spooky cities, exotic gardens and taking a trip over the moon, to discover the true meaning of connection. This heartwarming performance is a celebration of family, friendship and the warmth and comfort of home. The students were mesmerised by the music of Peter Kennard as a one-man band he provided both instrumentation and dynamic sound effects. After the brilliant performance Year 3 went on a guided tour of the State Library. Some highlights were the visits to the Map Room and the Shakespeare Room where all are welcome to stop for a while and take in the beautiful glass stained windows while reading works from the Bard of Avon. Students marveled at the ornate decorative ceiling and elaborate wood carvings. Featured in the heart of the library was the main Reading Room which featured thousands of books some centuries old, which could only be read while wearing protective gloves. In NSW largest library we were amazed to find its smallest book, no bigger than a fingernail! Talk about light reading!
We were surprised to see so much artwork displayed too - it felt like a bonus excursion to an Art Museum. Year 3 loved the excursion and returned with a real sense of awe and wonder for the written word and journeys they can take you. Thank you to our parent helpers who accompanied us, it was certainly an incredible day!

From the Secondary School
A busy Term 2 in Secondary
A busy Term 2 in Secondary

The Secondary School has had another fortnight filled with a wide range of learning activities both inside and outside the classroom!
It also never ceases to amaze us with the amount of talent we have in such a small school. Within the last two weeks, our girls have represented Tangara with pride in CIS Swimming, HZ Futsal, Da Vinci Decathlon, Hills Zone Cross Country and Archdale Debating.
Congratulations to our Year 7-11 students who participated in the Da Vinci Decathlon at Knox last week. A special mention goes to our Year 8 team who placed 3rd in the Art and Poetry category. Well done girls!
Well done to our Primary B ISDA Debating Team who made it all the way to the Octo Finals. Although they were narrowly defeated, it was wonderful to see the girls debating skills develop over the duration of the competition. Thanks to Mrs McFarlane and Therese Meney for coaching this team throughout the season.
Congratulations to all of our Secondary students who competed in the HZ Cross Country at the International Equestrian Centre this week. A number of girls have now progressed through to AICES Cross Country next week, which is a wonderful achievement. A special mention goes to Clare T and Olvia S in Year 10, who placed 2nd and 3rd in the 16 years age group. Good Luck for AICES!

Year 7 Geography Assessment
Year 7 Geography Assessment

This semester Year 7 Geography students have been learning about various types of geomorphic hazards including tsunami’s, volcanoes, landslides and earthquakes. We investigated how these geomorphic hazards are formed, their impact on communities, and ways they can be monitored and prepared for, to minimise the impact on the local community. As part of their assessment task, students were required to choose a geomorphic hazard to research and present in a poster form, to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the content in a creative form. Overall, this assessment task received good feedback from the students, and was an excellent way to learn about the topic.

Year 11 Modern History Excursion
Year 11 Modern History Excursion

In Modern History, students have been studying the Representation of History through art and monuments as well as Sydney’s own Anzac memorial in Hyde Park. Last term, our year 11 Modern History class were given the opportunity to partake in an excursion to Hyde Park’s Anzac memorial to represent Tangara at the 2024 RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Commemoration Service. This allowed the students to truly discover the emotional experiences Anzacs faced, and the effect of war on Australian society both past and present. Please read on to hear from two of our students recount their experience.

Teaching & Learning
Elevate Study Skills
Elevate Study Skills

As your daughter in secondary school embarks on her upcoming exam block, we thought it was an opportune moment to remind parents about how you can help at home with two key tips from elevate:
1. Helping your child relax during exams
Stress around exams is unfortunately an inevitable part of the process. The question is the extent to which they are stressed, because a little bit of stress is actually quite useful at this time of the year. The best way to help your child manage stress is to identify the reason they are stressed so that you can tailor your response. For example, if you child is overwhelmed by sheer volume of study and workload, you can help by reducing chores that they do at home. If they have a part time job, perhaps they can take a break from it during the exam period. You can also help them by assisting them in creating a study planner where they can break down their subjects into a series of specific tasks that can be ticked off a list and provide them with a clear sense of progress.
2. Blocking Distractions by Controlling The Environment
Elevate encourages parents to set up a space that maximises attention. The research shows that it is much more effective to separate study from the rest of life. The first thing you should do is find a space in which studying is removed from the hustle and bustle of life at home. It might be your child’s bedroom, a separate study if you have one, or simply a room as far away from the TV and noisy siblings as possible. Set up a space for your child that has a desk, is quiet, and is removed from others in the home. This simple change will ritualise the study process and help to keep your child focused and on task.

da Vinci Decathlon
da Vinci Decathlon

Last week, students from Years 5-11 participated in the da Vinci Decathlon, with our Year 8 team placing 3rd out of 78 in the category of Art and Poetry.
This prestigious academic competition, inspired by the legendary Renaissance figure Leonardo da Vinci, challenges students to engage in a range of intellectually stimulating tasks that test their creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork.
We are incredibly proud of all our students who participated this year. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and hard work were truly commendable. They spent countless hours preparing, honing their skills, and learning to think both critically and creatively. Participation in such an event is no small feat, and our students demonstrated exemplary perseverance and teamwork throughout the competition.
Let us continue to encourage our students to strive for excellence, embrace challenges, and celebrate their successes. Together, we are nurturing a community of thinkers, innovators, and leaders.

National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime
Once more, Tangara joined over 2 million children at nearly 60,000 locations around Australia for National Simultaneous Storytime.
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual event in Australia that brings together communities, schools, and libraries to celebrate the joy of reading. Held on May 22 this year, NSS sees participants across the country reading the same picture book simultaneously. This synchronized reading experience fosters a sense of unity and highlights the importance of literacy in society.
Organized by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), NSS selects a specially chosen picture book written and illustrated by Australian talents. This year, the book was Bowerbird Blues, by Aura Parker, who visited Tangara only last year. Mrs Sakr delighted the Year 2s with her rendition in the Library, while Mrs Vukovic read to the Yr 1s and Mrs Dineen to Kindergarten. Mrs McAuliffe and Mrs Ellis read to the two Prep classes.
The students had great fun identifying the many blue items that Bowerbirds collect.
