What a wonderful finish to a busy and enriching Term 2! I am always so proud of our students for the way they embrace the many opportunities available at our school. Whether it's in the classroom, on the sporting field, in public speaking, through community service, in leadership roles, or any other area, our students consistently demonstrate a strong work ethic and an enthusiastic attitude toward their learning.
These opportunities not only help our students grow academically but also play a crucial role in helping them to develop in virtue and character. It’s often said that character counts, and the achievements of our current and former students, both at school and in the community, continue to prove that Tangara girls are capable of anything. I have been especially proud of the girls who have stepped up as leaders and role models, those who have looked out for others, shown kindness, and made a positive difference to our community and beyond. Congratulations and thank you!
As we move into the second semester, we remain committed to working closely with our parents to ensure our students develop into strong, independent, and confident young people. The Semester One reports are a good indicator of what is going well, and the areas where further development is required. Together, we strive to support our students in doing their best and supporting them along the way.
Happy Feast Day!
This month, we celebrated a very special occasion at Tangara: the Feast of St Josemaria. Often referred to as the "saint of the ordinary," St Josemaria encouraged people to strive for holiness by doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. This idea is truly inspiring, as it means that each of us can become saints by putting our best effort and love into our everyday tasks.
This principle aligns perfectly with our school motto: "Ad Summam Virtutem" – Towards the Fullness of Virtue. By striving for excellence in everything we do, whether it's in our work, sports, music, debating, or even our moments of leisure, we can become the saints God has called us to be.
To mark this special feast, we held “Spirit Week,” where students participated in fun activities each day. The highlight of the week was Wednesday's Mass in honour of St Josemaria, followed by an International Food Festival and afternoon activities. The enthusiasm during events like "Crazy Hair Day" and "Socks and Ugg Boots Day" was contagious!
A special thank you goes out to our parents who organised and ran the food stalls, and to our Year 12 students whose impressive leadership enhanced the wonderful spirit characteristic of our school. Your efforts truly made this Feast Day memorable.
Tangara Graduates meet with Pope Francis
It has been a week of pride for Tangara, as we celebrate the achievements of two outstanding graduates. Congratulations to Rachel Vala (Class of 2015) and Elizabeth Fernandez (Class of 2021), who were among only 20 young Australian Catholics selected for the “Building Bridges Initiative”. This synodal process aims to help Pope Francis understand the issues affecting young people.
Elizabeth, a Law and Business Administration undergraduate, spoke on issues in family life, social matters, and peer-related challenges facing young people. Rachel facilitated a student group through the initial rounds of dialogue, leveraging her work with the ACU Chaplaincy, and delivered closing remarks to Pope Francis on behalf of the entire project. Both graduates attribute their leadership and success in this vital initiative to the many opportunities they were given at Tangara.
Thank you and Happy Holidays!
I would like to extend my thanks to every member of our dedicated and talented staff. Your tireless work ensures that our students benefit from exceptional learning, wellbeing, and co-curricular experiences. Your commitment to our students is deeply appreciated.
To our parents, thank you for your continued support and engagement in your child's learning and formation. I hope you and your children have a wonderful break, and I look forward to seeing you all when we return for Term 3 on Wednesday 24 July.

"We have finished Term 2 with our traditional Saint Josemaria feast day, with its whole school Mass and the food festival.
Once Saint Josemaria was asked in a gathering with young people what he was expecting precisely from them, the young people. His answer is applicable not only for students but also for parents and staff. To be young is not just a matter of age but a matter of the spirit. It is worthwhile quoting his full answer:
"I want all of you to be happy, and I ask this of our Lord with all my soul. But if you want to be happy, you have to be ready to follow our Lord, following in his footsteps. He didn't hesitate in following the path, one which was tough, requiring strength and resistance. So you have to make it your goal to work and to sanctify your work.
In this way, you will be capable of keeping a home, if this is the path God has in store for you. You will face all the things this world holds, and not all of them are pleasant; those things which are not pleasant are transformed into something pleasant through your good humour.
Your duties as a Christian can be summed up in being loyal. He who does not keep up his struggle - a struggle against himself - is not a loyal person. Wherever it may be: high, low, to the right, to the left... anywhere! If you don't struggle, you will not be loyal. So you should resolve to be loyal, to take life seriously. Students, by studying; and those who work, in working. And to work hard, without pulling back! With perseverance!
I see you, and I think, "the world needs people like you," in your environment, in your work, in your family, in the place where your life is unfolding, in your place of rest or amusement, may you be a man of integrity, strong, amiable and Christian. So I expect all of this from you."

Healthy Harold
Healthy Harold visited Tangara Infants once again. Harold is a caring giraffe who helps to explain important health and safety issues to our students. Everyone enjoys and learns a great deal from Harold who is not only loveable, but very wise. Through interactive sessions with Harold the giraffe, students explore ‘Big Feelings’, healthy eating, the importance of exercise and how to keep safe at home and in the community.
Future Engineers
During lunch, our Kindergarten and Year 1 students happily play together with building blocks and bricks, fostering creativity and teamwork. They enjoy the challenge of designing and building constructions for a variety of purposes.
'We are building a tower that can hold a 1000 cars, it even has ramps.' Year 1 Students.
'This is a castle with a winding pathway, we worked together to make this.' Year 1 Students.
'We constructed a neighbourhood with a church.' Year 1 Students.
'I love building a tall tower until it falls over.' Kindergarten students..
'It’s fun to build something and then knock it over.' Kindergarten students.
NRMA Visit
Kindergarten and Year 1 participated in the NRMA Road Safety incursion. This event provided students with an opportunity to learn important road safety skills. Through an engaging presentation, students gained practical knowledge about pedestrian safety, understanding traffic signals and the importance of wearing seat belts.
Teddy Bear Picnic
On Tuesday, selected students were invited to 'The Teddy Bear Picnic'. Students earn their invitation to the picnic by trying their best in all aspects of school life. Congratulations to this term's guests who enjoyed a fun morning tea with delicious treats.
St Josemaría Escrivá
On Wednesday we celebrated and learnt about the life and works of St Josemaría Escrivá. To remember our special friend in Heaven we completed fun learning activities and enjoyed wearing mufti clothes.
Kindy Farm
This week the farm animals visited Kindergarten. Our little Tangara farmers came prepared with their working clothes and straw hats, ready for a hard day at the farm. Kindy farm brings the joy of the farm to young learners, allowing them to interact with a variety of friendly animals including ducks, chickens and sheep.
100 Day of School Celebration- Term 3 Week 2
On Friday 2 August, Kindergarten and Year 1 will be celebrating 100 Days of School. As this is a special milestone, students will be invited to dress up as their 100-year-old self and participate in fun and educational learning activities highlighting the number 100. Further details will be provided early next term.

We have all enjoyed a fabulous week celebrating our patron saint St Josemaria! The highlight of the week being our school Mass and green and gold mufti day! If only we could wear mufti everyday! Please enjoy the photos.
The holidays are fast approaching, and everyone is looking forward to a good break. Although it has been a short term, it has been action packed!
There is a lot that can be done in the holidays to continue the learning momentum going.
I found some great suggestions from By Dr Samantha Hornery, Executive Manager of Learning Education. I have summarised her suggestions below:
Fun School Holiday Activities for Learning
During the year your child has learnt many important skills. School holidays are a great time to relax and have fun, but it can also be enough time for this important learning to be forgotten. To avoid this, we have compiled a list of suggested activities and games to keep your child thinking during the holidays. You can use these ideas anytime as they are fun and help your child practice the wonderful skills they have worked so hard to learn.
Activities for Fine Motor Skills & Handwriting
Here are some ideas and activities for fostering nimble fingers and correct pencil grip and control:
- Dot-to-Dot drawings or mazes.
- Origami.
- Colouring in.
- Build models with LEGO and blocks.
Activities for Oral Language (Talking and listening)
During and after school holiday activities, try some new and different ways that you can support your child’s language development:
- Ask them to recount a day out with details of ‘When’, ‘Who’, ‘Where’ and ‘What’.
- If you’re out and about in the car, or it’s a rainy day, try some of these games: Shopping List – ‘I went shopping and bought bread – milk – sugar’ and the child has to remember what has been said before.
- I Spy – modify by giving clues about what the item looks like and what you do with it rather than just saying the sound it starts with.
- Guess Who – make up some clues about a person using personality traits or what they look like, and have them guess who it is.
- Celebrity Heads – ask your child to think of one of their favourite characters or celebrities and ask questions to uncover who it is.
School Holiday Activities for Reading
Encourage reading by making it fun and interesting for them:
- Pick an interesting book (fact or fiction) and read to your child every day – show by example, a love of reading.
- Read purposeful texts with your child (train timetables, holiday brochures, recipes).
- Encourage a short 10-minute reading session every day to sit and read with your child.
- Visit the local library to help your child find a type of book they enjoy.
School Holiday Activities for Writing
Test out some creative ways for your child to practice their writing:
- Keep a holiday journal once a week (or more if you can manage it) with details of ‘When’, ‘Who’, ‘Where’ and ‘What’. Have your child draft it on scrap paper and then present it in a project book or type it on a computer. If they want, they could add in souvenirs (movie tickets, photos, trinkets).
- Write a joke book with your child – tell jokes to each other and write them down.
- Make a recipe book – cook with your child, talk about the recipes and put them in a book.
- Write postcards to family and friends.
- For those children with a wild imagination this is the time to write long, glorious stories because there’s no bell for lunch to disrupt the flow of writing.
Activities for Mathematics
Think about different opportunities to practice basic maths skills:
- All children would benefit from revising times tables – listen to the song in the car, play card games with the times tables written on cards (question on one card, answer on the other).
- Practice basic maths facts using board games – all you need is a blank board game, die, counters and a 12-sided spinner (or number cards or die).
- Use cards and dice lying around the house to play maths games – simply flip two cards or roll two dice and add, subtract or multiple the numbers. The answer can be used to move around a game board or score points for the highest or lowest answer. These games can be made more challenging by increasing the number of cards or dice thrown at any one time.
- Design your own games. Children enjoy being creative and can design their own board, materials and rules – lots of skills are practiced with this fun activity.
I hope all our families enjoy a wonderful break.

Year 4 Excursion Old Government House
Year 4 Excursion Old Government House
Year 4 Rust has had a busy term. During week 3, we attended an excursion to Old Government House and Experiment Farm Cottage. We learnt about how early settlers live in Australia and how the Indigenous population made their own tools.
We learnt a play about early colonisation of Australia also and we performed it in week 6 at the Primary Assembly. During science we have been learning about the interdependence of nature and how raw products are manufactured. We all researched raw products and how they are manufactured. This research was presented as google slides to the class.
In our English time, we composed persuasive texts about whether indoor or outdoor play is better. Most of the class agreed that outdoor play is better.
We look forward to learning more during this year.

Community Service Term 2
Community Service Term 2
This term, Tangara girls have been giving up lunch time to play at Prep with the little ones, helping out at a Korean Community Language School, visiting their ‘old’ friends at Anglicare Nursing home, participating in our Tangara Vinnies Van shift and cooking up a storm of delicious meals for hungry families via the Dignity Dish organisation. This coming Saturday Year 11 students will be joining Redfield students and cooking and feeding 100 “rough sleepers” in Woolloomooloo. A great term’s service!
Year 7 - Kids Giving Back
Year 7 worked tirelessly preparing and cooking 155 meals for those most in need around Sydney. They demonstrated excellent team work and a cheerful and industrious spirit of service to make these wholesome and delicious meals for those that would otherwise go hungry. They also learnt a great deal about the many false stereotypes surrounding homelessness and how important it is to show compassion, charity and mercy to all those in need whenever we can.
Year 8 - Our Big Kitchen
Year 8 put in a very industrious day working at Our Big Kitchen in Bondi, where they made 600 delicious cookies and 600 delectable bread rolls for the Vinnies CEO Winter Sleepout. This is Vinnies biggest fundraiser of the year, where 7 million dollars was raised to provide shelters and much needed funds for those in need.
Year 11 - Homeless Project
A generous group of Tangara girls and Redfield boys spent a few weeks planning and preparing to cook for 100 rough sleepers in Woolloomooloo. They spent Saturday cooking wholesome meals and chocolate brownies and then braved the cold and rain to serve food and give warm hospitality to these very needy people in our city including families. Their self-giving was very appreciated by all.

Teaching & Learning
Academic Excellence Interviews
Academic Excellence Interviews

This term, members of the leadership team have initiated a series of Academic Excellence Interviews with our Year 12 students. These interviews are aimed at fostering academic excellence and preparing our Year 12 students for the Higher School Certificate (HSC).
Purpose of the Interviews
The primary goal of these interviews is to support our students in setting and achieving their academic goals. By engaging in one-on-one discussions with members of the leadership team, students can reflect on their current progress, identify areas for improvement, and set realistic and achievable goals for their HSC preparation.
Focus on SMART Goals
During the interviews, students are guided to create SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This approach ensures that their goals are clear and attainable, providing a structured pathway to success. Here’s a brief overview of what SMART goals entail:
- Specific: Goals should be clear and specific, answering the questions of what, why, and how.
- Measurable: Goals need to be measurable to track progress and stay motivated.
- Achievable: Goals should be realistic and attainable to ensure they are within reach.
- Relevant: Goals must be relevant to the student's personal aspirations and academic needs.
- Time-bound: Goals should have a clear timeframe, creating a sense of urgency and focus.

Senior Ethics Olympiad
Senior Ethics Olympiad

This term, five Year 10 students: Evelyn Sheppard, Surin Jung, Ruby Vassallo, Marina Diab, Andrea Villafano, had the opportunity to participate in the Senior Ethics Olympiad, competing against other schools throughout the day via Zoom. In preparation for the competition, students thoroughly familiarised themselves with eight ethical cases. On the day of the event, they were required to articulate well-considered responses to one of the three questions associated with each case. Considering this was our first time competing in such an event the students did very well to come 8th.
What is an Ethics Olympiad?
An Ethics Olympiad is a competitive yet collaborative event in which students analyze and discuss real-life, and timely, ethical issues. It differs from a debate in that students are not assigned opposing views; rather, they defend whatever position they believe is right and win by showing that they have thought more carefully, deeply, and perceptively about the cases in question.
Experience shows that the event encourages and promotes ethical awareness, critical thinking skills, civil discourse, international engagement, and an appreciation for diverse points of view.

Sydney Symphony Excursion
Sydney Symphony Excursion

On Thursday of Week 7 elective Music classes from 9-12 went to the Sydney Opera House to watch the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing the music of John Williams. It was an amazing opportunity to be able to hear the pieces live as the orchestra performed some of Williams' most renowned compositions, including Superman, Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park and Star Wars themes which filled the air with excitement and anticipation. In Term 1 I studied John Williams and his compositions, so being able to attend the concert was an amazing experience.

Primary Class Music - Year 2
Primary Class Music - Year 2
In class Music, the Year 2 students have worked in pairs to compose three notes melodies using a set 8-beat rhythmic pattern.
The students used notes from the C major pentatonic scale and performed their original melodies on glockenspiel. The Year 2’s also learnt the "Popcorn Chant", performed as a class group in canon and then in pairs using body percussion to create ostinato rhythms. The girls enjoyed testing their co-ordination by performing a rhythmic marching chant called "I Left My Wife in New Orleans".

Infants Music
Infants Music
In class Music, the Kindergarten students explored pitch on tuned percussion. We used chime bars to create high and low sounds to represent Jack and Jill in the children's song, "Two Little Blackbirds sitting on a Hill". The students created glissandi by gliding the beater across the chimes, to represent the flight of the blackbirds leaving and returning.
Our Year 1 students have explored ascending and descending notes of the C major scale and then performed “Hot Cross Buns” on the glockenspiel. They had great fun learning a Circassian circle dance which involved the whole class performing a sequence of choreographed 8 beat steps with partners, to a lively Irish jig.
The Infants students all thoroughly enjoyed learning a few traditional hand clap songs, such as "Double Double This " and "High Low Chick-a-low". They tested their co-ordination by singing and clapping the songs in pairs.

I’m Abi Roy, the 2024 Public Speaking Captain.
You may remember me from the very first Captain’s Corner, which was quite a few moons ago, so here is what’s been happening with Public Speaking recently.
This month, it was a great privilege and honour to launch the “Voice of Tangara,” - an internal public speaking competition, where our students from years 7-12 participated. Round 1 was on the 7th of June, and Round 2 was on the 21st of June. Participants had to pull out an unseen topic from a hat e.g. “The true crime genre is popular, but is it ethical to watch?”. They had a few minutes to prepare an impromptu speech either for, or against the topic. We had a total of 16 courageous girls put up their hand to participate, and deliver a speech on an open soapbox for our Tangara secondary students and staff.
Our amazing judges, Mrs Sakr, Mrs Pagano, Mrs Vukovic and Miss Tropea made the decision to select the top 5 and top 3 scoring participants from Round 1 and 2 respectively, for our final round next term. A big thank you to them for dedicating their time to judge.
Congratulations to our finalists from Round 1 and Round 2!
