Friendship has been the topic of focus at Tangara this week. From Friendship Days in Years 5 and 6 to the workshop on Genuine Friendship in Secondary as part of our virtues program, REAL (Real Excellence and Attitude for Life), students have been reflecting on the importance of building meaningful connections. Last week, developing and nurturing friendships was the key focus for our Year 5 and Year 6 students during their "Friendship Day." The girls had a day out of their usual school routine to learn, discuss, and reflect on the important virtue of friendship. This was achieved through interactive discussions, team-building activities, a meditation session, and time for personal reflection and journaling. At Tangara, the value of friendship is central to our school community. Friendships play a crucial role in shaping the experiences and character of our students, and we place great emphasis on nurturing relationships that are built on the virtues of kindness, charity, trust, and loyalty. These virtues are the foundation of deep, lasting friendships, helping our students support one another through both the joys and challenges of life. One thing our Tangara graduates always appreciate is the strong bonds of friendship they build during their school years, bonds that continue to thrive well beyond graduation and into their adult lives.
At Tangara, we believe that leadership begins at home, continues to be nurtured at school, and extends far beyond into the wider community. The values of responsibility, integrity, and service start within the family, where students first learn the importance of leading by example. At school, we build upon this foundation by encouraging all students to embrace leadership opportunities in various forms - whether through formal roles or simply by showing initiative, compassion, and resilience in their daily interactions. Our leadership programs are designed to empower every student to recognise their potential to lead, regardless of whether or not they wear a badge. Beyond school, we aim to prepare our students to carry these leadership qualities into the broader world, contributing positively to society with the confidence, strength, and vision essential in today’s world.
On that note, I would like to formally congratulate our newly elected leadership team for 2025. We are confident they will continue to uphold Tangara’s values and serve our school community with dedication and integrity.

We are also delighted to share the wonderful news that two of our alumni, Keika Nishihara (Class of 2019) and Catherine Murphy (Class of 2020), have recently joined the Dominican Order in the United States as postulants. It is truly inspiring to witness the diverse vocations that arise from our Tangara community. Please join us in praying for Keika and Catherine as they continue on this blessed journey of faith. I also ask for your prayers for members of our school community who are ill and for those grieving the loss of loved ones. As part of our extended Tangara family, we remain united in supporting one another through prayer and in practical ways during times of need.
You may have noticed Tangara featured in the Daily Telegraph yesterday in an article highlighting how single-sex schools, particularly girls' schools, outperform co-ed schools in NAPLAN results. My own professional experience has reinforced my strong belief that an all-girls education contributes significantly to building girls' self-confidence, motivation, leadership aspirations, and overall academic and personal achievement. While we are certainly proud of our girls' outstanding NAPLAN results, we recognise that this is only one part of the bigger picture at Tangara. Our focus is on developing well-rounded young women who excel not only academically but also in character, leadership, and service. I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our parents, who work in genuine partnership with our dedicated staff to achieve these outcomes. Together, we create an environment where our students can thrive and reach their full potential.

From the Chaplain
My last article was about the Vinnies sleepout, works of mercy and prayer. It was a great and beautiful experience for all of us who joined the initiative in different ways. I thanked the Lord when I came out of the sacristy to start the Vigil and saw a full chapel with high school girls praying on a Friday evening. I think that is a kind of a miracle that we don't have to overlook.
Following up what I said to the girls in that Vigil, it is important for us all to remember that the works of mercy are expressions of a prayerful heart that is touched by the compassion of Jesus. Benedict XVI explains this internal connection between works of mercy and prayer:
"Prayer, as a means of drawing ever new strength from Christ, is concretely and urgently needed. People who pray are not wasting their time, even though the situation appears desperate and seems to call for action alone. Piety does not undermine the struggle against the poverty of our neighbors, however extreme. In the example of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta we have a clear illustration of the fact that time devoted to God in prayer not only does not detract from effective and loving service to our neighbor but is in fact the inexhaustible source of that service. In her letter for Lent 1996, Blessed Teresa wrote to her lay co-workers: “We need this deep connection with God in our daily life. How can we obtain it? By prayer”.
In prayer we understand that it is the Love of Christ that urges us on to do what we can here and now for those in need: attending a Vinnies sleepout or night van; dignity dishes G's; intergenerational program; buddies day for disadvantaged children. And always, asking our lord to enlarge our heart to better understand the people we find difficult and different.

Kindergarten Mass
The Infants Kindergarten Mass on Wednesday was a beautiful event, shared by students and their families. Fr. Paul spoke to the children about the special moment in the Mass when the Holy Spirit is present, creating a meaningful experience for all. The Kindergarten students displayed exceptional behaviour and reverence throughout the service, reflecting their deep prayerfulness. Following the Mass, parents and students gathered to enjoy a lovely morning tea together in the sunshine making it a memorable occasion for everyone. A special thank you to our High School leaders who provided support with the readings and music.
International Dot Day
International Dot Day was a fun and inspiring event for our students. They began by listening to ‘The Dot’ by Peter H. Reynolds, a story that encourages creativity, confidence, and the importance of taking a risk. Throughout the day, students participated in exciting dot-themed activities, including creating unique dot-inspired artworks. The highlight for many was decorating biscuits with Smarties, adding a sweet touch to this creative celebration!
Year 1 Artist
Chelsea Zhao, a talented Year 1 student, has already made remarkable achievements as a young artist. One of her stunning artworks was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Young Archie competition and is currently on display at the NSW Art Gallery. Chelsea has also been recognised as a finalist in the Wild At Art exhibition, where young artists from across Australia raise awareness about threatened animals and plants. We are excited to see how Chelsea continues to share her artistic talent and passion for important causes in the future.

Kindy Mini Olympics - A Day of Fun and Connection
Kindy Mini Olympics - A Day of Fun and Connection
Last weekend, the Kindergarten families from Tangara gathered at Redfield for a fantastic Mini Olympics event. With over 100 attendees, both children and parents enjoyed a fun-filled day under the sun. The children participated in a range of exciting games and activities, showcasing their energy and enthusiasm.
The event wasn’t just about fun for the kids - it was also a wonderful opportunity for parents to connect, bond, and build stronger relationships within the school community. Laughter, cheers, and smiles were in abundance, making it a memorable day for all.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the event a great success!

How Things Move
Learning about how things move has been an exciting adventure filled with exploration and discovery in Kindergarten Silver. Students have engaged with basic movement concepts by experimenting with rolling balls down ramps, pushing and pulling toys, and using their bodies to mimic actions at different speeds. Through hands-on investigations, students have explored movement in the world around them and have developed a strong understanding of this in relevant ways.
In English, we explored this concept further as we learnt about different Australian animals and how they move. Students started to use adjectives in their writing to provide more detail about how animals walk, climb and hop. Our favourite animal is the kangaroo because we learnt many interesting new facts about them through stories and videos.

Year 5 and 6 were blessed with beautiful weather for their Friendship Reflection days last week. Both year groups had the opportunity to work together through a variety of different activities throughout the day. Please enjoy the photographs.
Social Action Expo
Tangara took part in the IPSHA Social Action Expo at Kings last week. There were 30 IPSHA schools in attendance and Our Giving Girls Social Action group was one of 13 schools presenting their Social Action Initiatives. It was a wonderful day of sharing ideas and connecting with other schools, our girls did a great job!
A Reminder about Punctuality
Punctuality is essential for your child’s success as it allows them to begin their day with a sense of routine, focus, and preparedness. Arriving late not only disrupts children’s learning but can also affect the entire class. When students are present from the start, they can fully participate in important morning activities that set the tone for the day. Please assist us in ensuring all students arrive in time for Morning Assembly at 8:30am.

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The Virtue we are working on in the Junior School is Courtesy.
Courtesy is treating people considerately and thinking about what is good and pleasant for them, not just us. It means seeking to make others comfortable and smooth over conflicts and awkwardness. Being courteous prevents rudeness and arguing. It helps a home or a school run more smoothly because people aren’t selfish.
I am practicing courtesy when I:
· Show others that I respect and value them
· Remember to treat elders, parents, teachers and children politely.
· Think about how my actions affect others
· Eat, speak and move more graciously
· Greet people with a smile and kindness
Where does Courtesy fit?
Love
· Forgiveness
· Compassion
· Empathy
· Charity
· Respect
· Friendliness
· Courtesy
· Kindness
· Patience
· Helpfulness
For older students:
😊How many people do I think about when I make decisions?
😊Is it worth inconveniencing myself to make someone else’s life easier? Why/why not?
😊 What is an area where I haven’t been very courteous lately? How can I change that?

This term has seen the students enjoy many activities in class, working as both individuals and in groups to complete a variety of tasks. In one activity the class: created, tested and raced ‘Flying Paper Pterodactyls’ for Science Week. Catching sight of these in mid air and some even travelling 2–4 metres was amazing.

Term 3 has flown by and it's hard to believe that there is only two weeks to go until we have to say farewell to our wonderful Year 12 students. We are very much looking forward to celebrating their school journey over the next fortnight but between now and then, learning still continues until the final festivities begin in the final week of term.
Punctuality for school
It is important that your daughter arrives on time to school each day. Our school day commences at 8:30am with Roll Call. If your daughter arrives past this time, she is required to sign-in as “Late” at the Admin Building and hand in her mobile phone here to be stored for the day. Infringements will continue to be issued for students arriving late without a valid explanation lodged via Engage. It is important that your daughter understands the importance of punctuality, as during morning Roll Call, important messages and announcements are given for the day ahead and we would not want her lateness to then impact her learning.

Tangara Vinnies Winter Sleepout.
140 girls raised $6635 for homeless shelters around Sydney. The girls gave up technology, their cosy beds and an 8 hour sleep to support and provide for those in great need.
These girls also spent part of their night in the chapel praying for these people and for everyone!
Their generosity and cheerful and lively spirits made a very worthwhile night all round.
Tangara Buddies Day
A well organised and enthusiastic group of year 10 students gave up their Saturday to host a fun day for children from disadvantaged backgrounds around Sydney.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the delicious morning tea and lunch, the craft, the sport, the fun games and the dancing. They left Tangara at the end of the day as a very happy, grateful group of children who can’t wait for next year’s Buddies Day at Tangara!
Warrah Fair
With our generous cake donations and selling cakes on the day we helped contribute to a very successful annual fair for Warrah School - helping to raise about $500 for their needs for the years ahead.
Vinnies Van
Our wonderful year 11 girls fed and gave company to the homeless in August and September.

Teaching & Learning
Staff Professional Learning: Explicit Instruction
Staff Professional Learning: Explicit Instruction

At our recent professional learning session, our dedicated teachers delved into the highly effective teaching method known as explicit instruction, guided by Rosenshine's principles. These principles, which emphasise clear, structured teaching and high levels of student engagement, are a cornerstone of our approach to ensuring all students have the opportunity to succeed. The session focused particularly on the value of "all-student response systems," which encourage active participation from every student in the classroom. By asking questions and seeking feedback from all students, teachers can quickly assess understanding and provide immediate support where needed.
During the session, Joel Richardson, our talented Head of Music, provided an excellent showcase of how explicit instruction is applied in his Year 8 music class. Joel shared how he uses these techniques to prepare students for their upcoming music assessment. His approach involves breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps, regularly checking for understanding, and providing clear, guided practice to ensure every student is equipped for success. His demonstration was a powerful reminder of how these evidence-based strategies can enhance student learning, no matter the subject.
As we continue our professional development in this area, we are committed to applying these strategies in every classroom, helping all students reach their full potential. We look forward to seeing the positive impact on student outcomes as we refine our practice with Rosenshine’s principles at the forefront.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we strive for excellence in teaching and learning.

If you are able to help withOperation Christmas Child, please come to the library and collect your shoebox!
Each Christmas, Samaritan’s Purse organises a program, Operation Christmas Childthat encourages those who have...to give to those who do not. It partners with local churches in developing nations to reach out to children by providing gift-filled shoeboxes and exposing them to the love of God.
How can you help?
From this week we will have 150 flat pack shoe boxes with information brochures at the Library. If you would like to participate in this project, please ask your child to collect a shoebox and information brochure from the library. You will need to know How to pack a shoeboxand What goes in my shoebox?
On top of the cost of items bought to put in the shoebox, there is also a $12.50 postage and handling fee. If a donation is completed online for your physical shoe box, you are able to track where your shoe box gets delivered - this is exciting as a family to watch!
A new feature: Samaritan’s Purse has an option to pack an Operation Christmas Child shoe box online, if you do not want to go to the shops. Click hereto read more about this option.
Boxes are due back at the end of Week 2 in Term 4 (Friday, 25 October 2024). Hoping that you will get involved in this worthwhile cause. Should you have any further questions, please email me at samantha.ellis@tangara.nsw.edu.au.

Paramatta Bishops Excellence Award Ceremony
Paramatta Bishops Excellence Award Ceremony
Last Thursday, I had the honour of attending the annual Parramatta Bishops Excellence Award ceremony, where I received the award as a representative of Tangara. Accompanied by Lilliana Stillone from Year 11, who read a beautiful citation as I accepted the award, the experience was truly memorable. We were also privileged to hear an inspiring speech from Bishop Vincent, who offered words of encouragement to us Year Twelves. Receiving this award is a profound honour, and it wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support of my school and family.
My path as Faith and Mission Captain for 2024 has been an incredible journey of learning, growth, and enjoyment. I’ve had the opportunity to meet new people and engage in events that I might not have experienced otherwise. My aim as faith and mission captain was to harbour a strong community and encourage participation in faith based activities. As a role model for fellow students, I have organised Term 1 fortnightly faith quizzes, launched a new chaplaincy newsletter for high school students, and supported fellow captains with their initiatives.
Overall, this year has been both fulfilling and enriching and as my time at Tangara comes to a bittersweet close, I know the school will always hold a special place in my heart. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my amazing grade, teachers, and family. Your support and encouragement since Year Seven have been instrumental in my journey, and I am deeply grateful for all that you’ve done.
"Brief indeed is our time for loving, for giving, for making atonement" - St. Josemaria.
As I approach the final two weeks before the HSC exams, I am reminded of the preciousness of our time and the importance of making the most of it. In these moments of reflection and preparation, I commit myself to giving my utmost effort and dedication. I promise not only to strive for excellence in my exams but also to honour the support and love that the school and my family have generously provided me. This is my way of giving back, ensuring that I fully appreciate and reciprocate the care and work that have helped shape my journey.
Voice of Tangara 2024
Voice of Tangara 2024
Public speaking at Tangara in 2024 has certainly been a year filled with excellence, excitement and exuberance.
A while back, part of the “Captain’s Corner” in the Rust and Navy, I had shared the great experience and privilege of developing and launching Voice of Tangara, an internal public speaking competition for girls from years 7-12. With great enthusiasm and collaboration with the 2023-2024 leadership team, head of secondary school, Miss Tropea, and head of English department, Mrs Pagano, we ran three successful rounds of competition including the Voice of Tangara Grand Finals.
The Grand Finals took place on Friday, the 26th of July, where the top scoring participants from Round 1 and 2 battled it out for first, second and third. Myself, judges Miss Tropea and Mrs Pagano, and our greatly supportive audience, witnessed 9 exceptional speeches from our finalists - girls with and without a formal public speaking repertoire. Unlike Round 1 and 2, where participants had to deliver impromptu speeches on certain topics, the Grand Finals involved prepared speeches based on a chosen song title to relate to the subject matter of the speech. For example, one of our finalists, Simrat Gondara, chose the song “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish to deliver a powerful speech regarding feminocentric beauty standards, and the reality of growing up as a young girl and woman in today’s world.
Congratulations to our 9 finalists for demonstrating great courage and passion in delivering their original, compelling and high-calibre speeches.
Simrat Gondara (Year 7)

Emilie Mifsud (Year 12)
Rachael Hanna (Year 12)

Dominique Sarkis (Year 12)
Daniela Mikhael (Year 12)
Our judges on the day were met with the difficult decision of ultimately deciding our first, second and third place speakers amongst the great abundance of talent. A very hearty congratulations to:
FIRST place: Syona Nyshat and Ruby Vassallo
SECOND place: Dominique Sarkis
THIRD place: Laela Bou-Samra
Of course, these events aren’t possible without all the assistance and support behind-the-scenes, so I would like to extend my appreciation to Miss S for assisting with sound and tech in each round, assisting the event to run as smoothly as it did!
Thank you to our judges across all three rounds:
Mrs Sakr
Mrs Pagano
Miss Tropea
Miss Vukovic
And lastly, thank you to every girl who raised her hand to be a part of the competition, for doing something not only fulfilling for yourselves, but for setting a valuable precedent for the Tangara community.
Voice of Tangara has been a rewarding and uniting experience for everyone involved, and a truly beautiful thing to see young girls turning into confident young women, using their voices on important issues that concern us today and for coming generations.
