I am writing to you from the Philippines, where, along with the other Heads of the PARED Schools, we will meet with leaders of the PAREF schools and participate in the international conference Building Bridges – Global Collaboration of Best Practices on 21st Century Character Education. It’s an opportunity to connect with school leaders from around the world, networking, and exchange ideas that will help shape and guide future generations.
As a Tangara community, we remain united in prayer for Pope Francis during this critical time. His leadership and wisdom have been a guiding light for Catholics, and we pray for his health and strength as he continues to lead the Church. We continue to keep former Tangara graduate Lucy Tudehope (Class of 2017) in our prayers as she shows slight improvement after becoming critically ill due to complications from double pneumonia. Our thoughts and prayers remain with her and her family during this difficult time, and all other members of our community who are experiencing health challenges.
Back at school, the Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 11 February, was a spectacular display of talent, teamwork, and school spirit. The level of competition was impressive, but what stood out even more was the enthusiasm and unity among students, cheering each other on and giving their best effort. A big thank you to all the parents who came along to support - it was wonderful to see you there, encouraging your daughters and sharing in the excitement of the day.
On the debating front, our ISDA teams have had an incredible start to the season, winning four out of eight debates over the past two weeks. Congratulations to all the girls who have competed! Public speaking is such an important skill - it builds confidence, sharpens critical thinking, and empowers students to express themselves clearly and persuasively. We look forward to seeing their progress throughout the competition.
Another highlight of the past week was the Key Parent Function (KPF), which saw an outstanding turnout from Prep to Year 12. This level of attendance speaks volumes about the commitment of our parents and the strong partnership we share in guiding our student’s education. Your involvement in your child’s learning journey is invaluable, not just for academic success but for their overall growth and well-being.
At Tangara, leadership is rooted in our core values - Personal Excellence, Integrity, Respect, Service, and Faith. It is not just about holding a position but about serving others, leading by example, and making a meaningful contribution to our community. We strive to develop strong, compassionate leaders who inspire their peers and uphold these values in all they do. With this in mind, we are delighted to introduce our Primary House Captains for this semester.
Congratulations to the following students:
House | Student | Class |
Sienna | Lucia Assaf | 6R |
Sienna | Isla Iglesia | 6N |
Atlantis | Zoey Falcao | 6R |
Atlantis | Kiara Beaini | 6N |
La Mancha | Serena Semaan | 6R |
La Mancha | Lucille Fahd | 6N |
Tintagel | Claudia Perisa | 6R |

With such great energy and enthusiasm across the school, the year is off to a fantastic start. Together - parents, teachers, and mentors - let’s continue to support our students in sustaining the strong work ethic and positive habits with which they have started the year.

The Church teaches us to practice prayer, sacrifice and alms more intensely in these 40 days. The sacrament of Penance fits into these practices. First, prayer. It would be wonderful to discover Confessionin its entirety (preparation, confession, penance) as an encounter and dialogue with Jesus. Second, sacrifice. Putting our faith in action by saying our sins to a priest who acts in the person of Jesus is always a sacrifice. And alms: in Confession we give Jesus our sins and along with them, our repentance, fears and shames.
Pope Francis likes to tell this story: “I am reminded of a passage from the life of a great saint, Jerome, who had a temper, and tried to be meek, but that temper... Because he was a Dalmatian, and the Dalmatians are strong, he had managed to dominate his way of being and so he offered the Lord many things, a lot of work… And he asked the Lord: ‘What do you want from me?’ – ‘You still haven’t given me everything’ – ‘But Lord, I have given you this, this and this...’ – ‘One thing is missing’ – ‘What is missing?’ – ‘Give me your sins.’ It’s beautiful to hear this: ‘Give me your sins, your weaknesses, I will heal you, and you will go forward’.
So let's learn from this story and practice reconciliation with Jesus in the sacrament of confession. The experience of Jesus' love poured out on our wounds will make our hearts capable of the miracle of forgiveness. And we will be able to forgive our loved ones, friends and peers.
Lastly, let's keep up our prayers for the Pope and his health so that he can be discharged from hospital soon."

It has been an exciting start to the school year. All students from Prep to Year 1 are settling into their new routines with enthusiasm. We are especially proud of how they are forming friendships, playing cooperatively, and showing kindness to one another.
Learning is thriving across the Infants’ classes, with children engaging in a variety of hands-on and interactive activities. Our Prep children have also been aspiring artists, busy creating beautiful pieces that showcase their creativity and imagination. With the warm sunshine, we have embraced opportunities for outdoor learning, allowing students to explore, discover, and connect with nature while developing important skills. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and confidence grow each day.

‘Teamwork makes the Dream work’
‘Teamwork makes the Dream work’
This term 1 Navy have been busy learning about the GIVE virtue ‘Teamwork’.
1 Navy have explored the following questions:
What does it mean to work as a team?
What does collaboration look like?
How can we work together? and is our class a team?
By working in teams 1 Navy have not only developed their problem solving skills, communication, and critical thinking skills, but it has also allowed students the opportunity to learn from their peers.
1 Navy had the pleasure of performing ‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars at the Infants Assembly, to which parents were invited. They also shared their beliefs about the qualities of teamwork and why it is important to be a good friend and work together.

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue that we are focusing on in the Junior School is Orderliness.
Definition:
A place for everything. Keeping my environment well arranged, so I can be effective and reach my full potential.
I am practicing orderliness when I:
Have a place to put each of my things
Put my things away in the same place when I am finished with them
Solve problems step by step
Have a plan before I start a job
Create a harmonious space that makes my soul peaceful
Practical Tips
If you think of it – do it, don’t put it off for another day
Create appropriate times for your activities
Set a timer to keep you on track
Leave a room better than you found it
Have a ‘home’ for all your stuff (piles are not homes!)
Stop a task a few minutes earlier, giving you time to pack away before the next activity.
Don’t dump on the table when we walk in – put things away – and push in chairs when you get up from the table.
For older students:
😊 Orderliness is more than organising our stuff.
😊 Every area of our life can be in order: our relationships, our priorities, our possessions, time, and responsibilities. Can I give some examples in my own life?
😊 Understanding why something is important is helpful as it strengthens our determination to learn new habits. What do I consider important in my own life?
Year 3
Year 3
Year 3 started the year excited to move to the main primary building and quickly learnt new routines, made new friends, stepped up and embraced the new freedoms which came with new responsibilities. We love Thursday afternoon choir and music groups where some of us have chosen to play the flute, trumpet, cello, violin, and clarinet.
Participating in our first swimming carnival was so much fun and we cannot wait for the cross country and the athletics carnival later this year. So far, we have managed to consistently remember all our uniform items, take responsibility for our belongings, complete and return our homework on time and avoid paper pick up and reflections - we are certainly growing into excellent Year 3 students!
As we enter the season of Lent, we are trying to pray more, be more compassionate to others and fast from thinking only of ourselves and think of others.
In class we have been working hard preparing for the upcoming NAPLAN but also remembering to have some fun as we learn. In literacy, we've been exploring exciting new stories and improving our reading comprehension skills. Our vocabulary is expanding daily and our writing is becoming more creative and structured. We've been working on multiplication tables and problem-solving strategies. It's wonderful to see their confidence growing with each lesson. Our topics of “Energy” and “Change over Time” have captured everyone's imagination. Our teacher says that we have been asking fantastic questions and she has loved hearing all the interesting facts that we share.
We've been focusing on teamwork and kindness, and it's been truly inspiring to see our students living out our G.I.V.E motto by working as a team and being helpful and kind to everyone. We hope to keep up our level of engagement and hard work throughout the year ahead!

Writing Workshops for Secondary
We were very excited to welcome acclaimed children's author, Sue Whiting, to run a series of writing workshops for our high school girls on Tuesday, 25th February. Sue has had 75 books published ranging from picture books to some very exciting historical and mystery middle fiction books, such as Missing, Tilda, and The Book of Chance. The girls received lots of encouragement and tips to help them add interest and depth to their creative writing. She helped them to discover how to create a vivid setting, characters that the reader will care about and a page turning plot. Sue has a couple of new books coming out later in the year, which will be welcome additions to the Library.

What is lent and what can you give of yourself to God?
Ah, Lent. That time of year when the candy aisle at the grocery store becomes a forbidden land, and everyone’s suddenly talking about sacrifices like they’ve just signed up for a new diet plan. But let’s slow down and take a breath. Lent is more than just giving up chocolate or trying to survive without your favourite TikTok trends. It’s a season of reflection, growth, and (yes) a little self-discipline.
So, what is Lent really about, and how can you make the most of it without feeling like you’ve entered an endless season of self-denial? Let’s break it down!
What is Lent?
Lent is a 40-day period in the Christian calendar that leads up to Easter. It starts on Ash Wednesday (this year is the 5th of March in Week 5) and ends on Easter Sunday. It’s a time of reflection, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
Lent doesn’t mean you have to give up all the fun stuff in life. It’s about making intentional changes to grow spiritually. It’s like pressing the “reset” button on your spiritual life, only there’s no need to worry about losing all your progress or accidentally deleting your photos.
The Big Three of Lent:
Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving
1. Prayer– Talking to God like he’s your old friend
Lent is an excellent time to strengthen your relationship with God through prayer. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to turn into a full-time prayer warrior or whip out the rosary every time you hit a traffic light. It’s about creating a habit of connecting with God - whether it’s saying a prayer before bed, starting your day with gratitude, or even sneaking in a moment of quiet reflection during a lunch break.
2. Fasting– No, You don’t have to starve yourself
Fasting. The word alone might make you think you’ll be subsisting on water and air for the next 40 days. But the point of fasting isn’t to torture yourself -it’s to make room for something deeper. The idea is to give up something that distracts you or takes up too much of your time. So maybe you skip the third cup of coffee, or you cut back on social media scrolling. Fasting isn’t about punishing yourself, it’s about letting go of distractions to focus on something more important: your relationship with God, and maybe even a little personal growth.
And hey, if you decide to give up chocolate, you’ve got a legitimate excuse to eat all the Easter candy after Lent. Talk about a win-win.
3. Almsgiving– The art of giving without making it awkward
Almsgiving is about sharing with others - whether that means donating money, giving your time, or offering your help to those in need. Lent challenges us to give without expecting anything in return.
Giving doesn’t have to be a huge, grand gesture. It could be as simple as helping a neighbour with groceries, donating to a charity, or even giving your time to volunteer. The key is that your giving comes from the heart. After all, it’s the thought (and the kindness) that counts.
Lent Promise Ideas!
How to stay sane while you fast and give:
Give Up One “Guilty Pleasure”: Maybe you give up soft drink or cut back on doom scrolling on Instagram or TikTok. The point is to let go of something that isn’t serving you well.
Add a “Random Act of Kindness” Daily: Whether it’s holding the door for someone or texting a friend to check in, make it a point to do one small thing every day to make someone else’s day better.
Turn Your Phone on “Do Not Disturb” for 30 Minutes a Day: Yes, really. Spend the time reading, praying, studying or simply being present with your own thoughts.
Spend More Time with Family: No one said Lent couldn’t include a little Netflix, but maybe aim to watch a show with your family instead of bingeing solo for hours.
Opportunities to give alms to communities who need help:
Donate to a Charity: You don’t have to be rich to make a difference. Look around for local charities that could use a little help, whether it’s a food bank, homeless shelter, or a community organisation.
Volunteer: Use your talents to help others. Whether it’s reading to children, helping at a local food pantry, or simply giving someone a ride, your time is just as valuable as money.
Give Thoughtfully: If you see a cause that resonates with you during Lent, whether it’s supporting someone in need or donating clothes, make sure your generosity reflects the spirit of the season.
Lent isn’t about getting caught up in guilt or feeling like you’re being punished. It’s about resetting your heart, making time for what really matters, and giving back in a meaningful way. It’s a season of growth, reflection, and yes - sometimes, a little sacrifice. But when you embrace the season with a sense of purpose, you might just come out on the other side feeling more connected, centered, and ready for Easter.
Kate Hatcher
Faith and Community Service Captain

My name is Laela Bou-Samra, and I’m proud to be Tangara’s Public Speaking Captain for 2024/2025. I have been a passionate public speaker my whole life. Anyone who knows me would say I’m always up for a fun discussion about any topic and am always ready to learn new and exciting things. One thing I admire about Tangara is the variety of opportunities for public speaking the school offers from keen Primary students, all the way to students in their last years of high school.
So far we have already seen so many public speaking events being held at our school, from the girls’ outstanding performance in the IGSA Festival of Speech, the start of the ISDA Debating Competition, and the Mock Trial which we held auditions for this week - over 20 keen Year 10 and 11 girls tried out!
It is so beautiful to see our Tangara community across all ages develop a passion and love for Public Speaking in its various forms. Public speaking is an integral part of everyone’s lives, and I would like to encourage students to go out of their comfort zones and participate in a judgement-free environment.
By introducing Primary School’s ‘TalkFest’ competition for younger girls we aim to shape their public speaking skills at a younger age, and develop their confidence in communicating with others. As the Public Speaking Captain, I will strive to support each and every one of these Tangara girls to learn to be confident in her opinions and values, and express themselves with sophistication as a young woman.
I'm excited to see the exciting Public Speaking achievements from our school community this year!
