Growth through Perseverance
Over the past two weeks, students from Years 5 to 12 at Tangara have been completing exams and assessments, with Year 12 students continuing to work through their assessment tasks. These challenges - consistent study, careful revision, and managing nerves are more than academic; they are opportunities to grow in virtue. By approaching their work with perseverance, responsibility, and integrity, students develop habits that build character and prepare them for life’s greater challenges. As results begin to come in, it’s important to focus on effort rather than just marks. Each result offers a chance to reflect, learn, and set meaningful goals. Mentors play a key role in supporting students and working with parents to guide their continued growth and success. If you haven’t yet made time to meet with your child’s mentor this term, now is a great opportunity to do so.
Excellence in Action
The past fortnight has been filled with outstanding achievements across Tangara, as students showcased their talents, teamwork, and dedication in a range of academic, creative, and sporting competitions. Here are some highlights:
Da Vinci Decathlon
Congratulations to all our students from Years 5 to 11 who competed in the highly competitive Da Vinci Decathlon, representing Tangara among over 70 schools across the state. The event challenges students to think critically, work collaboratively, and solve complex problems across a range of disciplines. We placed in several categories and are incredibly proud of the effort, creativity, and teamwork displayed by our teams.
Northwest Schools Primary Basketball Challenge
A huge congratulations to our Primary basketball team - E. Eckersley, C. Kwon, O. Sreeskantapathy, J. Bowen, T. Kennedy, S. Leung, A. Nassif, and J. Kim who remained undefeated throughout the rounds and went on to win the Grand Final! Their teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship were truly commendable.
ARCHDALE Debating – Round 4
Our Senior, Junior, and Year 10 Archdale Debating teams were all victorious in Round 4 of the competition. These wins are a testament to the poise, persuasive skill, and preparation of our debaters, who continue to represent Tangara with distinction.
Mock Trial – Round 2
Congratulations to P. Downie, A. Vassallo, A. Weeraratna, E. An, T. Pillai, and O. McDonald for their win in Round 2 of the Mock Trial Competition. Their strong advocacy and critical thinking skills were on full display in the courtroom setting.
Sydney Eisteddfod
On May 31, N. Jiang from 4R achieved third place in the ‘Song from Music Theatre’ session at the 2025 Sydney Eisteddfod. Her talent and confidence on stage were remarkable - well done, Natalie!
Hills Relay for Life
A heartfelt thank you to all students and families who supported Tangara’s participation in the Hills Relay for Life. Congratulations to E. D’Souza who placed first in her event, and to the team for winning 1st place for the best decorated tent. Together, our community raised nearly $9,000 to support people affected by cancer - a powerful witness to our values in action.
Each of these achievements is a reflection of the excellence that arises when our students challenge themselves, serve others, and work together with purpose. Well done to all!
Looking ahead
We have a number of special events coming up in the life of our school. Next Wednesday 11 June, I look forward to welcoming our parents and cheering on our students as they compete with enthusiasm and show a strong sense of school spirit at the Athletics Carnival. The following week, on Thursday 19 June at 10.30am, we warmly invite all our parents and Tangara graduates to join us for our Eucharistic Procession, followed by Mass. We are honoured to welcome Bishop Vincent Long, who will lead us in this deeply meaningful celebration. On Thursday 26 June, our school community will come together to celebrate the Feast of St Josemariawith a special Mass for staff and students, followed by an International Food Festival and a fun-filled afternoon of activities for students in Years 2–12. Finally, we invite all families to attend the Mass in honour of St Josemaria on Monday 22 June at 7.30pm at St Mary’s Cathedral, celebrated by Bishop Anthony Randazzo. We hope to see many of you there.

From the Chaplain
This water of the Holy Spirit comes to quench the thirst that we all feel deep down in our hearts: we are thirsty to be seen and not be judged upon; we are thirsty to be safe and not to fear anyone or anything; we are thirsty for an everlasting Love and not just a love that will disappear with death. Is this Love possible? Yes, it is.
It is precisely at the well of our hearts where Jesus gives us to drink his Spirit. When we follow Jesus in our ordinary life through personal mental prayer; when we are able to accept our life as Jesus wants it, even if at times we suffer and we suffer greatly; when we are humble and ask for forgiveness to Jesus and our neighbour then our hearts are filled with the water of the Holy Spirit: joy, peace and wisdom. And that water will never decrease in the future because it comes from God. Actually it will become a spring-well that will water not only our hearts but the hearts of the ones around us, in an overflowing torrent of serenity, good humour and prayer."

It has been a buzzing time in the Infants department, with a variety of experiences that have engaged our students in faith, community, and learning.
May Pilgrimage
The month of May is dedicated to Our Lady, and to honour her, our Kindergarten and Year 1 students took part in a school-based pilgrimage. As they journeyed around the school grounds, they prayed the Rosary and visited special places that reminded them of Mary’s love and care for us all.
Responsible Pet Ownership Incursion
Our Prep students were fortunate to take part in a special incursion focused on responsible pet ownership. Gentle Finnic, our visiting canine companion, helped remind us of the care, kindness, and responsibility we owe to all of God’s creatures, especially our beloved pets. It was a heartwarming and educational experience that reinforced the importance of compassion and respect for animals.

Year 1 Mass
Fr John celebrated a beautiful Mass with our Year 1 students and their parents in the school chapel. It was a special occasion that reminded us of the importance of our faith and the central role the chapel plays in our school community. Following Mass, our guests joined us for a lovely morning tea under the very welcomed sunshine.
Winter Uniform Reminder
Winter has arrived with a burst of freshness in the air! As the weather cools, we remind families that students are to wear their full winter uniform, including the school jumper and blazer. The winter sports uniform includes school tracksuit, sports shirt and school jumper when needed. Please also ensure that your child has a clearly labelled raincoat for wet weather days.

Tangara Girls Shining
You will read more in the Rust and Navy about the outstanding achievements of our Da Vinci Decathlon teams. These students represented Tangara with excellence and competed confidently against many other schools. We were also delighted to hear that Maria K from Year 3 was awarded Runner Up in her age division for the Harmony Day Competition. A wonderful recognition of her creativity and effort.
GIVE Friendliness
The Year 6 Captains gave four wonderful speeches about the importance of Friendliness and how we can all work on becoming a better friend. Each captain gave insights into what it means to be a good friend and encouraged us all to reflect on how we treat others in our daily lives. They shared practical ideas on how small acts of kindness, active listening and including others can make a big difference in creating a happy school community.
TOBET Begins
The Year 6 classes were thrilled to be able to visit the newly hatched chicks in the Infants area last week. This was an extension of our discussion in Religion about being able to see God in creation. It was an easy to wonder at God’s creation looking at these little chicks!
Around the Grounds
There is so much play happening in playground at lunch time. It’s great to see how the children enjoy each other’s company, playing well together. The games range from sporty to creative and everything in between.
Looking Forward
The term is flying by and before we know it we will be celebrating Spirit Week. This is a much anticipated highlight of the term! During the final week of term, the whole school comes together to honour St Josemaria, with various activities. More details will be shared soon.

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue we have been working on in the Junior School is Friendliness.
Friendship is a relationship based on shared interests and values as well as trust and support. A good friendship means you can be honest and feel comfortable. It is based on equality where both people put in effort, treat each other with kindness and neither one pressures the other into something they don’t want to do.
Friendship is crucial for our emotional health and development.
I am practicing friendliness when I:
· Smile and greet people with courtesy
· Have the courage to introduce myself
· Show interest in others
· Ask people about themselves
· Show caring when a friend needs me
Synonyms:
Love
· Forgiveness
· Compassion
· Empathy
· Charity
· Respect
· Friendliness
· Courtesy
· Kindness
· Patience
· Helpfulness
😊Would I want to be friends with someone like me?
😊How could I be a better friend this week?
😊Am I loyal? Think of a time when someone was loyal to you and describe how it made you feel.
Da Vinci Decathlon
Da Vinci Decathlon
On Thursday May 22nd two teams of Tangara students entered the Great Hall at Knox Grammar School, prepared to compete against the brightest primary school minds from around the state of NSW. It was quite a sight to behold – 79 year six teams and 69 year five teams in a flurry of activity as they applied their creativity, problem-solving and teamwork skills across ten dynamic categories: Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Philosophy, Creative Producers, Cartography, and Legacy. Each task was designed to foster collaboration and innovation, encouraging students to apply critical thinking skills in exciting and unexpected ways.
The students had spent many of their lunch hours preparing and building their knowledge around the theme of ‘light’. Whether deciphering intricate codes, exploring creative solutions to Ideation problems, or crafting compelling artistic interpretations, they showcased their dedication to academic excellence.
We are incredibly proud of our students for their commitment and enthusiasm in this challenge. Their willingness to embrace new ideas and push their limits reflects the true da Vinci spirit - one of curiosity, innovation, and lifelong learning.
We are thrilled that they achieved placings in the following events:
Year 5: 4th place in Code Breaking & 16th in Ideation
Year 6: 6th place in Ideation
We eagerly await Da Vinci 2026!

Our classroom is always bursting with enthusiasm and excitement, and it is hard to believe that we are only a few weeks away from the end of semester one. During this time the students have come together as a united, positive class group. We have enjoyed working collaboratively in small groups sharing our ideas and learning from each other. In our GIVE lessons we have had meaningful discussions, stories and tasks to enhance learning.
In Mathematics we focused on numeration and solving problems. We used different methods to calculate our answers and even used concrete materials like counters to get or check our answers. Our skills in data collection were put to the test when we investigated the different coloured cars in the school carpark. Working together gave us the opportunity to share different approaches to solving problems.
The ‘Stem’ program has given the students opportunity to work with the Sphero. Investigating the ways they can communicate with it and control it whilst solving problems as they arise.
Science lessons ensured that energy was abundant as the class made displays and booklets to display their knowledge of light and heat energy and how we use these in our everyday lives. This was followed up by investigating and presenting experiments showing the ‘changing state of matter’.
To ensure it wasn’t just our brain cells getting exercise we participated in many physical activities including the cross country. As you can see by the photos the students are happy runners.
We are looking forward to next semester and taking on new challenges and creating some more memories.

Ethics Olympiad Competition
Ethics Olympiad Competition

A big congratulations to our Year 10 students who recently represented our school in the Senior Ethics Olympiad and received honorary mentions from the judges for their outstanding performance!
The Ethics Olympiad is a national and international competition where students from various schools come together to engage in thoughtful discussions about complex moral and ethical issues. Rather than debating to win, teams collaborate to present well-reasoned, respectful arguments. Judges assess their ability to listen, reason, and respond thoughtfully - key skills in both academic and real-world contexts.
Our team’s exceptional performance was recognised with certificates and badges, which were presented at our last assembly. Reflecting on the experience, the students shared:
“One of the best parts of the experience was how open and inclusive the conversations were. Everyone’s opinion mattered, and we learned how to build on each other’s ideas to develop thoughtful responses to challenging questions.”
They also noted that the Olympiad helped them gain new perspectives, build confidence in speaking, and strengthen their critical thinking and collaboration skills.
And perhaps most importantly - “we had a lot of fun!”
Congratulations again to our Ethics Olympiad team for representing our school with intelligence, respect, and curiosity.

Teaching and Learning
Teaching and Learning

The last fortnight has been full of creative, hands-on learning across several year groups, with students actively applying their knowledge in imaginative and meaningful ways.
Last Wednesday, Year 10 Visual Artsstudents stepped into the darkroom for the first time, using their homemade pinhole cameras to experiment with traditional photographic techniques. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect the science of light with artistic expression, and students were both curious and excited as they developed their first images.
In Technology (Textiles), Year 8 studentshave finished their Tangara Fashion pyjama ensembles with outstanding results! The students have proudly completed their projects, with most making a matching storage bag, and one creative student even adding a scrunchie for fun! Their attention to detail and enthusiasm have been impressive throughout the unit.
Meanwhile, Year 12 Biology studentshave been bringing science to life - literally! In their recent practical, students built models of the immune response to demonstrate their understanding of phagocytosis, the process by which white blood cells identify and destroy harmful micro-organisms. This tactile activity helped clarify a complex biological concept in a fun and interactive way.
Across all these classes, students have demonstrated curiosity, skill, and creative thinking - hallmarks of deep learning. We look forward to seeing what they’ll achieve next!

2025 da Vinci Decathlon Inspires Young Minds
On Tuesday 20 May and Wednesday 21 May, Tangara School for Girls proudly participated in the 2025 da Vinci Decathlon – an academic competition that celebrates the diverse talents and creative thinking of students. Held annually, the da Vinci Decathlon challenges students in a dynamic, team-based format inspired by the multifaceted genius of Leonardo da Vinci. This year’s theme, Light, sparked imagination and inquiry across the ten disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Philosophy, Creative Producers, Cartography, and Legacy (History). Each task was designed to encourage learning by integrating skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and innovation. Teams were competing against between 55 and 79 different schools on each day depending on year group.
We are incredibly proud of all students who took part in this prestigious event. Their commitment to learning and willingness to challenge themselves reflects the very essence of the da Vinci spirit. Congratulations to all participants and on the following outstanding results:
Year 7 - placed 8th in Code Breaking
Year 8 - special mention for ‘Table Artwork’
Year 9 - 3rd place in Art and Poetry and 8th place in Engineering

MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION
In Round 2 of the Mock Trial Competition, Tangara competed against The Ponds High School in a compelling demonstration of the Australian Adversarial system.
Representing the Defence Counsel, our Tangara team impressed the presiding magistrate from the Law Society of NSW with their calm, confident demeanour and sharp cross-examination skills. Our barristers delivered their arguments with clarity and poise, while our star witness held firm under intense questioning from the opposing Prosecution team.
In a nail-biting finish, Tangara claimed victory by just two points. It was a hard-fought and well-earned win, made possible by the outstanding teamwork on display - especially from our dedicated Solicitor, whose support and preparation were invaluable to the team’s success.
Congratulations to all involved on a fantastic Round of Mock Trial!

Just yesterday, Issy and I attended the Parliament of NSW Secondary Schools Leadership Program, where we were immersed into the world of what goes on behind the scenes to keep our country running.
Our first stop was a meeting with Ministers of Local Government, who shared their journeys and insights into public service. Next, we had the privilege to sit in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council chambers during ‘Question Week’, a time when debates are at their most spirited. Sitting amongst the action, we watched as Members of Parliament engaged in lively discussions, challenging each other’s ideas and advocating for their parties. From budget allocations to community policies, we gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity of running New South Wales and the importance of collaboration in leadership. It made me think about how at Tangara, every girl contributes to our school’s culture, whether she’s organising an event, supporting a peer, or sharing an idea in class. One of the most special moments of the day was reuniting with Ms. Monica Tudehope, a Tangara Old Girl and the Liberal MLA for Epping, who spoke to us at our induction.
Her warmth, wisdom, and kindness to meet with us, was truly inspiring as she shared her journey from our school to the halls of Parliament. She spoke about the values of integrity, perseverance, and compassion; values we cherish at Tangara, that guide her work as a leader. Connecting with someone who once walked the same corridors as us was a powerful reminder that every Tangara girl has the potential to make a significant impact. It reinforced my belief that leadership isn’t confined to those with a badge; but that every girl at our school, through her actions and choices, shapes our community and beyond.
The day concluded with a tour of Government House, the official residence of the Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency Margaret Beazley who was gracious and engaging; sharing stories of her work and encouraging us to pursue our passions with courage. This experience at the NSW Parliament crystallized what being a leader truly means. Leadership is about service, putting the needs of others first and working to make a positive difference. At Tangara, every girl embodies these qualities in her own way. Whether she’s leading a house event, mentoring a younger student, or simply being a kind friend, every girl is a leader.
Thank you,
Lucy Denahy

As we approach the second half of our term after finishing exams, I would like to take this opportunity to express how proud I am of the hard work and dedication shown by our high school students. I was delighted to see the productive study groups taking place in the library at lunch as each student sought to uplift others to do well. It’s typical that when we are given solo tasks or have personal goals to achieve, we take the burden on ourselves to learn, study and practice. However, as Lucy and I mentioned in our last assembly to the girls, it’s so important to understand the empowering mobility of collaboration when preparing for big events like the exams. Our united class of 2025 truly embodies this, in which we know that any obstacles or hardships during school can be overcome, when being uplifted by the support of our grade. Thus, we really hope that we are able to inspire and be exemplary role models of unity for our younger grades.
In being the oldest, we see ourselves as big sisters to all of high school, and thereby responsible in looking after and taking care of them. Thus, with our experience at Tangara nearly coming to its end, we hope to also teach the younger students of the importance of balance. I remember being a very stressed, uptight year 7, haunted by my own expectations of achieving well in exams. However, it wasn’t until I was influenced by the integrity and wisdom of the senior girls, that I understood the Tangara experience was defined by so much more. This is what I hope I can teach the younger grades. There’s a key importance of balance in school, faith, family and friendships that may seem impossible to keep up with at times, but cultivates a supportive environment for you to thrive overall.
Thank you,
Isabelle Pillai
