Happy Feast Day!
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, reflecting on Mary’s total trust in God and her unique role in salvation history. Mary shows us what it means to be familiar and intimate with God - sharing our joys, worries, and needs without fear. This morning, our whole school gathered for a beautiful and solemn Mass to mark this special day. Through Mary’s example, we can grow in faith, find comfort in difficult times, and experience the joy and peace of Jesus. Let us continue to pray for the needs of our Tangara families and the wider world.
Smartphones Are Stealing Childhood - Let’s Work Together to Stop It
Over the years, our staff have noticed the negative impact of smartphones and social media on our students, and it’s important to bring it to your attention again. The social media ban for under 16’s is a hot topic, and it’s encouraging to see meaningful discussion around the overuse of screens. Last month, The Australian highlighted this issue, quoting clinical psychologist Danielle Einstein, who called the battle over screens ‘the defining parenting challenge of our generation.’
Einstein warns against using screens to calm children, explaining that learning to self-soothe without a device helps children stay curious, engaged, and better able to complete tasks. For older children and teens, relying on screens to lift their mood can increase anxiety. Both Einstein and Dr Judith Locke, our upcoming Key Parent Function speaker, recommend practical strategies for healthy screen use: no personal devices for young children, device-free family times (especially at dinner), and handing devices over an hour before bed. Modelling good screen habits at home is key to helping children develop healthy online boundaries.
We know the consequences of excessive smartphone and screen use are real - even for Tangara students. It’s time to sit up, listen to the experts, and take action. Together, home and school can create environments where our girls thrive, free from the pressures and pitfalls of excessive screen time.
Book Week and Grandparents' Day
We are excited to celebrate Book Week with our Junior School students next week and are also looking forward to Grandparents’ Day! Book Week is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the joy of reading and the vital role books play in sparking imagination, creativity, and critical thinking. Grandparents' Day is a wonderful opportunity to honour the important role that grandparents play in the lives of our families. Their love, wisdom, and support provide a strong foundation for our children as they grow and learn. At Tangara, we deeply value our grandparents’ contributions and the positive impact they have on our school community. We look forward to the smiles, laughter, and connections that this special day will bring.
Soiree
Finally, we are excited for our Soiree on Friday 22 August. It promises to be an elegant evening celebrating the music and art of our HSC students. Everyone is invited to join us in recognising the exceptional talent within our Tangara community. This event not only showcases the achievements of our senior students but also inspires our aspiring musicians and artists to aim high and work towards reaching their full potential.

100 Days of School
Kindergarten and Year 1 celebrated reaching 100 days of school! They had so much fun dressing up as their 100-year-old selves. Thank you to all the parents for helping them look fabulous at 100 years of age. The day was packed with activities exploring the infamous number 100, including fairy bread making, scavenger hunts and art projects.
Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross
We celebrated the feast day of St Mary of the Cross with hearts full of kindness. The high school students showered the children with ‘care’ by visiting during lunch to read them beautiful stories. Thank you to our wonderful high school students for making I-Care week so special!
Author Visit
We were lucky to welcome the talented author and illustrator Sara Acton to our Infants library. Sara shared how she uses her ideas and imagination to create stories and illustrations. Students had the exciting opportunity to join in a drawing session and become illustrators themselves.
Science Week
Science Week was out of this world, quite literally, with a planetarium visiting our school! Students stepped inside to explore the wonders of space and learn about planets, stars, and what can be seen in the night sky right now. Our teachers prepared a range of exciting science investigations and experiments to encourage students to explore and enjoy the wonders of science.
Book an Adventure
Our “Book an Adventure” library sessions took students on four exciting journeys, each inspired by a different Book Week story. With Adventure Passports in hand, students experienced four adventures: Mini Beast Explorers, Animal Safari, Journey to the Stars and Ocean Explorers.
Grandparents Day
We are excited to welcome our special guests for Grandparents Day on Thursday 21 August! Students will be performing for their special guests and showcasing their favourite book characters by dressing up and joining in a colourful parade. It will be a celebration not to be missed! Adding to the fun, there will be two collaborative artworks created by Kindergarten and Year 1 students available for the highest bid at our silent auction. All money raised will go towards new learning and play activities for our students to enjoy.

I-Care Week
Last week, our students were deeply immersed in the life and legacy of Australia’s first saint, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Each day was filled with activities that brought her spirit to life, from craft sessions in the library to special prayers offered across the school. In Religion lessons, students explored her inspiring story and values, engaging in creative experiences such as dressing as Saint Mary, reading imaginative letters from her, and retelling key moments from her life. Many classes reflected on her powerful message: “Never see a need without doing something about it,” It was so pleasing to see how many students entered the St Mary Mackillop exhibition with some very creative entries such as a crocheted Mary and a clay model.
Science Week
This week, our students celebrated Science Week with a series of exciting, hands on STEM challenges that brought many scientific principles to life. Year 2 explored tension and trajectory through their catapults and target games. Year 3 took to the skies with their Origami Pterodactyls bat planes. Year 4 investigated chemical reactions making Lava Lamps. Year 5 engineered paper bridges and refined their structures for strength and stability. Year 6 teamed up for a Marble Run challenge, building dynamic tracks that showcased gravity, friction, and momentum.
It was a fantastic week of discovery, creativity, and collaboration—truly capturing the spirit of Science Week!

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue we are working on in the Junior School is Respect.
Respect means always acting with deep consideration for others and being thoughtful to the feelings, rights or wishes of someone. It can also mean giving them honour or regard because of their position, abilities or relationship to you.
I am practicing respect when I:
· Treat everyone the way I would like to be treated
· Speak courteously to everyone
· Honour the rules of my family, school and country
· Act with the needs, feeling and rights of others in mind
· Show kindness to others
Discussion Points:
😊Are there any situations where I find it difficult to show respect? How do I handle that?
😊 Are there any incidents of disrespect recently that I need to say sorry for?

Building Resilience and Curiosity: Science Week & the Rock and Water Program
This year’s Science week in 5Navy was filled with hands-on learning and exciting challenges for our girls. Alongside their exploration of scientific principles, the students participated in the Rock and Water Resilience Program, an initiative that helps build emotional strength and resilience. From constructing paper bridges that tested their engineering skills to engaging in activities that promote mental resilience, Year 5 students had the chance to strengthen both their minds and bodies. Read on to discover how these two programs complemented each other to foster teamwork, creativity, and perseverance!
Science Week Spotlight: Year 5 Girls Take on the Paper Bridge Challenge!
As part of our exciting Science Week celebrations, the Year 5 Navy girls stepped into the shoes of young engineers with a thrilling Paper Bridge Building Challenge! The classroom was buzzing with creativity, teamwork, and scientific thinking as students explored the world of structures and forces.
Armed with just paper, sticky tape, and plenty of determination, the girls were tasked with building a bridge strong enough to hold a particular weight — using only recycled paper and sticky tape. Before getting hands-on, the girls discussed key STEM concepts such as tension, compression, and load distribution, and looked at real-world examples of famous bridges for inspiration.
The results were varied and interesting. From carefully folded trusses to rolled paper supports, each team approached the challenge with imagination and problem-solving skills. Some bridges held a variety of books as weights. Proving that with the right design, even the simplest materials can be incredibly strong.
More than just a lesson in engineering, the activity fostered collaboration, perseverance, and confidence — values at the heart of both science and learning.
Well done to all the Year 5 girls for showing such enthusiasm and innovation.
Building Resilience: Navigating Life with the Rock and Water Program
Rock and Water program is an award winning, evidence-based socio-emotional program which empowers students to stand strong physically and mentally. The Year 5 girls are lucky to be participating in this program during Semester 2 with Mrs Suzan Smith and their classroom teacher.
Rocks are hard, tough, strong and inflexible whereas water is free flowing, calm and flexible. The program uses the analogy of a rock and water to learn when we need to be like a rock inflexible, strong) and when we need to be like water (negotiating, free flowing and calm), and how to be a combination of rock and water in various situations. Students use physical games, role plays, discussions and activities to learn how and when to be rock, how and when to be water and how to be both in a variety of situations, such as in the playground, in the classroom, at sport or at home.
This program empowers our students to have confidence when dealing with peer conflicts by giving students practical tools to use in different situations.

Yr 11 Biology Excursion
Yr 11 Biology Excursion

On Monday 4th August, the two year 11 Biology classes went on an excursion to the mangroves at Bobbin Head.
After an introduction to Ku-ring-gai National Park, we had a discussion about the human impacts and threats that the mangrove ecosystems were under. Then we ventured outside, along a lovely boardwalk, into the mangroves.
The next activity involved counting the number of crab holes using a square frame called a quadrat. This enabled us to estimate the size of the crab population as we moved inland and away from the water. It was interesting to see how the numbers changed depending on where we were.
We then walked along a transect of the mangrove ecosystem, recording the plants we saw along the way. It was a great way to visualise the distribution of the many plant species that are found.
Along the way, we also encountered a friendly wild possum on the boardwalk! There were many different animals such as lizards and bush turkeys within the mangrove ecosystem, showcasing how important mangroves are to wildlife in Australia.
Later we carried out a variety of tests, measuring abiotic factors such as water temperature, soil pH, water salinity, water turbidity. This data showed how mangrove trees need to adapt to the abiotic factors in this space in order to survive.
Next we observed various mangrove species, noting their adaptations to survive the tides and salty conditions of Bobbin Head.
The excursion deepened our understanding of the ‘Biological Diversity & Ecosystem Dynamics’ unit and fostered an appreciation for the natural environment. The trip helped us connect lesson content with real-life fieldwork. Thanks Miss Sammut and Mrs Papantonio!!

Year 9 Camp
Year 9 Camp
Students in Year 9 attended the Great Aussie Bush Camp at Tea Gardens this week, where they embraced the opportunity to challenge themselves and step beyond their comfort zones. Through a variety of adventurous activities, they worked to overcome fears, build resilience, and support one another. The girls approached each challenge with enthusiasm, teamwork, and a positive spirit, making the most of every experience. From high ropes and the giant swing to pioneering activities, the camp encouraged personal growth, strengthened friendships, and made memories they’ll treasure long after camp.
Mrs Lela Vukovic
Deputy Principal
Camp was an amazing experience that pushed us to our limits, focused on our teamwork and problem solving. Our grade all came together to support each other and encourage everyone to face their fears. We participated in many activities including Leap of Faith, abseiling, Giant swing and many others. What stood out the most was the importance of trust and working together, to share ideas and find creative solutions to the challenges we faced. We learned to listen to each other, share responsibility and support one another when challenges got tough. By the end of camp we had not only built stronger friendships but also the importance of communication and cooperation in achieving a common goal.
Thank you for patience.
Angelica Sarkis 9N

Year 8 Camp
Year 8 Camp
The Great Aussie Bush Camp at Lake Macquarie was an unforgettable experience for the Year 8 students. It was impressive how the girls rose up to the challenge of trying out the different adventure activities such as high ropes, power fan, and rock climbing. These activities pushed students to overcome their fears (climbing up to 12.5 metres for the power fan can be a frightful experience!) and to challenge themselves to just give it a go. This resulted in the girls often surprising themselves with what they could do! These shared challenges and experiences helped forge new friendships and strengthened existing ones.
