Congratulations to our 2023 Class Leaders
An important skill fostered at Tangara is that of leadership, and it is a great privilege for me to see our students from Prep to Year 12 demonstrate age appropriate leadership skills everyday: being honest and genuine in their actions, using their talents to help and uplift others, doing something because it’s the right thing to do but perhaps not the most popular thing to do, and simply being a person of love who respects and looks out for others.
At Tangara leadership means service. It means striving to be women of integrity and of character who always give their best. Our Class Leaders along with our Captains play a very important role in encouraging, enthusing, and building the participation of all students in the life of our School. Congratulations to the following students who have been elected by their peers. I am confident that they, along with our Captains, will by their personal example, uphold Tangara's values and ethos.

Hills Zone Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to Tangara’s Hills Zone Swimming Team who represented Tangara with pride last Monday. The girls showed strength and resilience in the pool, and I am proud to report that our Primary students placed 3rd overall, and Secondary students placed 5th overall. Special congratulations to to the following swimmers whose performance was outstanding on the day:
Primary
Lucia Assaf (8-10 Years)
Clara Mulkeen- Suarez (11 Years)
Olivia Kim (12-13 Years) and who was the 12 years overall Age Champion.
Secondary
Isabella Assaf (12 Years) overall Age Champion.
Amelie Assaf (14 Years)
Olivia Siau (15 Years) 15 years overall Age champion.
These girls will now proceed to the next level to represent the HZSA. A big thank you to all our families. Your support and encouragement was greatly appreciated by our girls and staff. Thank you also to our Sports Coordinator Miss Sunner for her leadership on the day. Go Tangara girls!
Attendance and lateness
Growing our students in virtue and helping to form young people of character is at the heart of what we are trying to achieve at Tangara. And this is only possible when we work in partnership with our parents.
I am requesting your support in ensuring your child attends school regularly and does not get into the habit of “taking days off”, getting picked up early, or arriving late. We understand that children do get sick, circumstances sometimes prevent them from getting to school on time, or sometimes appointments have to be made during school hours. However, this should be the exception not the general rule. Please try to make appointments outside school hours.
School commences at 8.30am so students need to be on campus no later than 8.25am so that they are able to get to assembly and roll call on time.
Should your child be absent or late, parents receive a text message asking them to go into Engage (parent portal) and submit either an absent note or a late note. Parents have 7 days from the date of the absence note and late notes must be submitted on the day. If a note is not submitted within this time frame, your child’s absence or lateness will be officially recorded as “unexplained”.
Teaching students to be organised, on time, and to have resilience are all important virtues we are trying to inculcate when encouraging healthy school attendance and punctuality. We count on your support and cooperation in helping our students to be the best they can.
Looking ahead….
There are many events coming up in the next couple of weeks. Our students from Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit the Naplan exams next week. We wish them all the best. Plans and rehearsals are well underway for our school musical, Shrek Junior which premiers in May. The Archdale Debating competition continues, our girls have been going from strength to strength each week, developing in their public speaking, social and skills. I’m always so uplifted to see that the partnership which exists between our school and our parents is what drives the happy and vibrant culture of our school.

A practical way to live a more meaningful encounter with our Lord on Sunday Mass is to take care of holy communion. The way in which we do that is first of all keeping the houroffast prior to Mass. Also to confess any grave sins we have in our conscience that have not been yet confessed. The third thing that we can look at is those minutes in which our Lord is physically present with us once we receive Him.
It is a good way to show affection to our Lord not to rush out of church once the Mass is ended. It is a matter of five minutes that we can spend in intimate conversation with Him. And how can we build up a dialogue with Him? These words of Saint Josemaria can help us to approach our Lord as the divine physician:
"He is our physician, and he heals our selfishness, if we let his grace penetrate to the depths of our soul. Jesus has taught us that the worst sickness is hypocrisy, the pride that leads us to hide our own sins. We have to be totally sincere with him. We have to tell the whole truth, and then we have to say: "Lord, if you will" — and you are always willing — "you can make me clean." You know my weaknesses; I feel these symptoms; I suffer from these failings. We show him the wound, with simplicity, and if the wound is festering, we show the pus too. Lord, you have cured so many souls; help me to recognize you as the divine physician, when I have you in my heart or when I contemplate your presence in the tabernacle."

Our students from Prep to Year 1 are looking forward to The Big Crunch. The Big Crunchis an initiative by The Healthy Kids Association to encourage healthy eating. Tangara has been a great supporter for healthy eating for many years and has encouraged children to eat vegetables and fruit with our ‘Crunch & Sip’ breaks. Please read ‘Vegie Boost at Home’ for ideas on promoting and encouraging children to eat more vegetables at home. The Big Crunchwill be held at 10am on Thursday 30 March, so let’s get crunching.
Superstars Challenge
Our Kindergarten and Year 1 students have been discussing and sharing ideas as to what makes us a Safe Respectful Learner. To encourage positive playground behaviour we have the 'Weekly Superstars Challenge'. This week’s winners are our Silver group. They are awarded extra play time on the play equipment throughout the week.
Professor Maths
Professor Maths visited Tangara this week. Kindergarten and Year 1 were part of an engaging workshop of various stimulating hands-on activities presented by the one and only Professor Maths. Math activities are set up around the room for students to investigate and explore. Students work together as they solve mathematical problems whilst having fun under the guidance of our presenter and class teachers.
Caritas Australia-Tapitas
It’s not too late to enter our Gold Coin Colouring-in competition or to buy a $5 water droplet for Project Compassion. All money raised will go to those communities who are without clean drinking water.

Celebrating the Wonderful Women in our Lives
This week, we had the opportunity to think about the special women in our lives. The girls were encouraged to think about all the special ladies they know such as: their mums, sisters, aunties, grandmas and of course their teachers! We also spoke about Our Lady being the ultimate example of a loving women and mother. It was great to see the playground dotted with pink to remind us of these special people.
Lenten Offering
Many girls have contributed to the $5 water droplet initiative this Lent. It has been lovely to watch the display of drops growing every day. The money goes towards clean water projects in countries that do not have access to fresh water. It has been a good opportunity to talk to our students about those less fortunate than ourselves.
Special Year 12 Guests
During our Friday Assembly last week, some Year 12 girls presented to us a very entertaining item. The girls performed skits that reflected the GIVE virtues we are learning about this term. Our Primary girls really enjoyed the visit from their Yr 12 friends. It’s times like these we are so happy to be part of the extended school community and benefit form the example of these older girls.
Looking at the Positives
Following on from our last Rust and Navy, we have been encouraging the girls to appreciate and focus on the positives each day. This morning whilst on duty I was chatting with some of the Primary Girls and loved their comments:
What is a positive thing that happened to you this morning?
My brother was really nice on the bus
I had a really yummy breakfast
I woke up early and I wasn’t tired
I’m winning handball
It's a school day!

GIVE
GIVE

The virtue focus in the Junior School has been Helpfulness.
Helpfulness (service) means to do something for another person or group, even though you may not get anything in return. This assistance can be voluntary, a paid skill or a simple act of kindness. Helpfulness reflects a conviction that others are always important and selfishness is always wrong.
I am practicing helpfulness when I:
· Notice when someone needs help
· Do a service without being asked
· Give people what they need, not always what they want
· Listen to someone who needs to talk
· Ask for help when I need it.
Synonyms:
Where does Helpfulness fit?
Hard Work
· Citizenship
· Leadership
· Community Spirit
· Teamwork
· Helpfulness
· Service
· Generosity
· Natural Curiosity.
For older students:
😊When was the last time I helped someone without expecting anything in return?
😊How can I make a difference in my classroom this week?
😊Are there any school or community groups I am interested in helping with?

⃰NSW Health is waiting on the outcome of a review by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination schedule. International evidence indicates that one dose of HPV vaccine provides equivalent protection to two-dose. If a one dose-schedule is endorsed NSW Health will contact all parents of students who have been consented for two doses of the vaccine and also parents of students who have received one dose of HPV vaccine (to advise that they are up to date and do not require any further doses).

Change to 1-dose HPV Vaccine
Change to 1-dose HPV Vaccine
From February 2023, children in year 7 (aged 12-13) will be offered a single dose course of HPV vaccine at school vaccination clinics. (The Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis booster is also still offered.) Previously, students were offered two doses of the HPV vaccine in the NSW school vaccination program. The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has reviewed recent international evidence and has advised that a single dose of the HPV vaccine gives the same protection as two dose course.
Students in Year 8 who have already received one dose of HPV vaccine but who have missed their second dose will now be considered fully vaccinated and do not require any further doses. An SMS message will be sent to their parent/guardian advising of this.
