Athletics Carnival
The School enjoyed fantastic weather for the 2023 Athletics Carnival, and it was a day of brilliant enthusiasm, spirit and certainly a lot of athletic talent. The chorus of cheering coming from the stands was just as incredible as the athleticism displayed. This day would not have been possible if it weren’t for the help of all our amazing Tangara staff, who through great effort, ensured that the day ran smoothly. A special thank you to Ms Sunner who had the enormous task of organising this whole event and to our parent volunteers for running the canteen. It was definitely an extraordinary day for all of us. Thank you everyone for a great team effort.
Vinnies Sleepout
Last weekend over 100 of our Secondary students braved the cold weather to join the Vinnies Sleep Out Fundraiser. This community service initiative was an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges faced by thousands of Australians who experience homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness. It was also an opportunity to raise funds for the St Vincent De Paul Society who do an amazing job feeding, clothing and providing shelter for those in need.
Special thanks to Mrs Barbero and Gabrielle Tan, our Community Service Captain for organising this great community service opportunity for our girls. Thank you also to the staff, parents and Tangara graduates who volunteered their time to supervise the girls on the night. Tangara committed to raising $3000, and I am pleased to announce that our girls exceeded this amount, raising $7900. It's great to see our students developing a spirit of generosity and service.
Embracing challenges
I started the term challenging our Secondary girls to extend themselves and to move out of their comfort zones and embrace challenges. Challenges are an important part of life and have many benefits. It is through the challenges that we learn, grow and develop in character.
Challenges during teenage years prepare a person for the adult world. They foster a belief that obstacles are a normal part of life and that one can manage them and come through them, often being better for having had the experience. Hard times stimulate growth in a way that good times don't.
Facing challenges and navigating one's way through them builds resilience capacity. Knowing that one can overcome obstacles, learn from struggles and benefit from mistakes, lays a solid foundation for success in later life.
The presence of challenges in one's life often requires working with others or at least drawing support from others to come through them. This is a good thing. As John Donne said, 'we are not islands unto ourselves'. We live in communities and we flourish best, not as isolated individuals, but as people embedded in supportive communities. Facing challenges forces us, in a helpful way, to work with others.
When challenges are faced and conquered, there is a wonderful sense of accomplishment. It is often the substance of great memories and the motivation to extend ourselves further. In contrast, a smooth experience, devoid of challenges, runs the risk of becoming routine, predictable and entirely forgettable.
Please encourage your children to embrace the challenges presented to them for the remainder of this term - exams, assessments, learning an instrument, signing up for a new sport, community service or developing friendships. There are many opportunities each day to see challenges as opportunities for growth.
Looking ahead
I look forward to welcoming all our parents and Tangara graduates to our Eucharistic Procession this Thursday 8 June at 10.30am followed by Mass at 12pm.
On Thursday 22 June our School community will be celebrating the Feast of St Josemaria with a special Mass for our staff and students, followed by an International Food Festival for students in Years 2-12 and an afternoon of fun activities. Students are invited to wear mufti on the day in a colour representing their culture and to make a $2 donation. All money raised from the Food Festival and the gold coin donation will go towards our Innovation Fundraising for Yarra Hall. We thank you in advance for your generosity.
We also invite all our families to attend Mass in honour of St Josemaria on Monday 26 June at 7.30pm at St Mary’s Cathedral. The Mass will be celebrated by the Most Rev Anthony Fisher Op, DD, Archdiocese of Sydney.

Next Thursday 8 June, we will host our Eucharistic Procession on campus. This year we have redesigned the itinerary in a way that can help us to make it a more prayerful event. We will set up three altars for the three stops. At the first altar we will read Jesus' teachings on prayer and we will reflect on the fact that Jesus wants to become friends of ours. At the second altar, we will read a conversion story on the gospel of Luke. In silence, we will ponder the wonder of a merciful God who in Jesus pours out his mercy in the sacrament of Penance. And finally, at the third altar, we will read the account of the institution of the Eucharist: a God who is Love and wants to nourish us with Jesus' body and blood every Sunday at Mass.
As Benedict XVI explained the procession makes visiblethat in this life we are"walking with the Lord. This is the reality manifested by the procession that we shall experience together after Holy Mass, almost as if it were naturally prolonged by moving behind the One who is the Way, the Journey. With the gift of himself in the Eucharist the Lord Jesus sets us free from our "paralyses", he helps us up and enables us to "proceed ",that is, he makes us take a step ahead and then another step, and thus sets us going with the power of the Bread of Life.
Let's pray that the Eucharistic Procession helps our Tangara community to increase its faith in the real presence of our Lord in the tabernacle and at Mass so that we can bring this simple message to our families and friends: The Lord is with us.

National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime

On Wednesday 24 May Tangara joined over 2 million children with National Simultaneous Storytime. With other children throughout Australia and overseas we listened to the wonderful story, The Speedy Sloth, written by Rebecca Young and illustrated by Heath McKenzie.
‘National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country'. Infants Sports Day
On Friday 26 May, Tangara Infants hosted their first Infants Sports Day since 2019. Nothing was going to stop the fun and excitement of our sports day, not even the chilly temperatures. A big thank you to our wonderful Mrs Troup and her team of Year 9 and 10 students who prepared and guided our competing groups throughout the event. We would also like to acknowledge the efforts of our amazing parents who organised and assisted on the day providing a delicious Sausage Sizzle helping to make this day a memory making moment.

Pentecost
Pentecost
We celebrated the birthday of the church this week with cupcakes as it was Pentecost Sunday on 28 May. Pentecost is a beautiful time to reflect the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit. It reminds us of the marvels the Holy Spirit can create with the humble gifts we have individually been given.

Each year a picture book, which is written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, bookshops and homes. Our Prep children were very excited to learn that they were reading the story at the same time as many children around Australia!

From the Junior School

From the Junior School

The highlight over the last couple of weeks has been the clear effort made by so many children to display beautiful manners. Everyday girls come to me with big smiles and wish me good morning using my name and making confident eye contact, which is something we have been working on. I hear please and thank you often, I hear children asking permission before requesting things, they are waiting patiently, expressing gratitude, moving carefully and considerately through the buildings etc.
A recent article titled Why is Teaching Good Manners Important? explains
"Helping young children learn appropriate, polite and considerate behaviour enables them to form good manners and become more socially attentive as they get older. It’s easier to nurture positive child behaviour if you work as a family to set the rules for good manners in many different situations".
Some Practical Tips for Instilling Manners in Children
- Lead by example
- Set clear expectations
- Teach gratitude
- Encourage active listening
- Correct politely
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue we are working on in the Junior School is: Friendliness
Definition:
Friendship is a relationship based on shared interests and values as well as trust and support. A good friendship means you can be honest and feel comfortable. It is based on equality where both people put in effort, treat each other with kindness and neither one pressures the other into something they don’t want to do.
Friendship is crucial for our emotional health and development.
I am practicing friendliness when I:
· Smile and greet people with courtesy
· Have the courage to introduce myself
· Show interest in others
· Ask people about themselves
· Show caring when a friend needs me
Where does Friendliness fit?
Love
· Forgiveness
· Compassion
· Empathy
· Charity
· Respect
· Friendliness
· Courtesy
· Kindness
· Patience
· Helpfulness
For older students:
😊Would I want to be friends with someone like me?
😊How could I be a better friend this week?
😊Am I loyal? Think of a time when someone was loyal to you and describe how it made you feel.

Science in 6 Rust
Science in 6 Rust
This term in science, 6R have been investigating how properties of materials determine their use. We have also been exploring why the characteristics of materials are important when designing and producing.
METHOD:
- Place equal amounts of steel wool in each jar.
- Pour each different solution into a different jar. Label each jar.
- Close jars and observe changes.
We were careful to ensure there was only one variable (change) for each jar. We will document changes over 1 week.
Now, let’s wait and see what happens!! What do you think???

The Secondary School has had another fortnight filled with a wide range of learning activities both inside and outside the classroom!
It was beautiful to see our Secondary girls attending pilgrimages to honour Our Lady during the moth of May at various chapels around Sydney.
It also never ceases to amaze us with the amount of talent we have in such a small school. Within the last two weeks, our girls have represented Tangara with pride in Hills Zone Cross Country, Archdale Debating, AICES Cross Country, as well as our Athletics Carnival.
Our annual Athletics Carnival was a highlight of the term, with great participation rates and impressive House Spirit on display throughout the whole day. Well done to all girls and staff who made this day such a success!
Next fortnight we have the following events:
- Year 7-10 Half Yearly Examinations.
- Archdale Debating at SCEGGS and Tangara.
- Year 12 Elevate Study Skills.
- Eucharistic Procession.
- CIS Cross Country.
- Year 10 Subject Selection Evening.

We wish our Year 7-10 girls all the best for their upcoming Half Yearly Examinations next Monday and remind all students to create good study habits, with the aim to achieve their personal best!

Failure…the road to Success? Just Ask Ed Sheeran.
Failure…the road to Success? Just Ask Ed Sheeran.
To all those reading this, prepare for a pro tip that won't only help you with your study, but also for the other hard things in life!
In REAL this week we have been learning about having a strong work ethic, and with exams right around the corner this pro tip has proven most helpful!
We watched an interview with the famous star performer, Ed Sheeran. In the interview it was revealed that when Ed was 14 years old he was not naturally talented at singing. He talked about how “If you're going to succeed you have to fail”and how “Practice makes perfect”and finally, “Don't have a Plan B, because then you will just give up your dreams”.
My class found this very interesting, especially when listening to the song he wrote and sang at the time (“Addicted”). You can listen to it on YouTube and you will see what we mean, we couldn't listen to it till the end because it was that bad! We then moved on to two other videos.
What to do when you just can’t focused because you are stressed
When you can't focus and are stressed, most people try to relax on study breaks in order to calm down but that is actually the opposite of what will help you. Instead of getting rid of stress, it just distracts you from whatever you are dealing with, whether it be a looming deadline or a coming exam.
Distracting yourself is scientifically proven to NOT help you deal with stress, instead the method experts have recommended is to try and learn something new. Don't take study breaks, take learning breaks. Try to learn something (anything really!) that interests you. This has been proven to be able to calm you down and help your mind with your work.
But, I can hear you say “I don't have time to learn something new”, despite what has been previously thought, it doesn't take 10,000 hours to do that, in truth that survey was conducted on experts in their area and is no longer valid. In truth it only takes 20 hours.
So choose a topic, a subject or an area that you want to learn more about and improve in. Now plan to dedicate 20 hours to it, not all at once of course. You can do a few minutes a day, or a few hours a week. I hope these tips prove beneficial for you as it did for us.

Vinnies Winter Sleepout
Vinnies Winter Sleepout
On Saturday the 27 and Sunday the 28 of May, 111 Tangara girls from Year 7-12 participated in the Vinnies School Sleepout. The girls, along with gracious parents, teachers and TOG volunteers, spent one night ‘sleeping rough’ in the Yarra Hall on foam mats, air mattresses and sleeping bags in order to experience a small part of what thousands of Australians live everyday. To raise awareness of “Youth Homelessness becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s society, the girls asked for generous donations from their loved ones to sponsor their participation in the sleepout, with a grand total of $8008 being achieved. It was an incredibly valuable experience that taught the girls important lessons of empathy and thankfulness and we’re all incredibly grateful to our gracious sponsors, parent and TOG volunteers and Mrs Barbero for providing us with a night we won’t forget.
Our canteen became a soup kitchen for the homeless. Thanks so much Mrs Nguyen for making more than100 homeless girls delicious and heartwarming soup!

During the Month of May, we celebrate our Lady Mary, Mother of God by taking the students on a pilgrimage.
Year 11 Pilgrimage
Last Wednesday, the Year 11’s embarked on a transforming pilgrimage to Our Lady of Dolours in Chatswood. The reverence and serenity of the Holy place, greet visitors as they enter the beautiful church and a powerful sensation of devotion and wonder is sparked by the beautiful shrine's very presence. With each step, impassioned prayers and moving hymns fill the air, fostering a sense of spiritual harmony. People are immersed in a profoundly spiritual experience while on a pilgrimage, which helps them to deepen their faith and lifts their spirits.
We were blessed with the sun shining brightly, as we all sat silently on the church's steps, reading and reflecting on the most holy mysteries of the rosary. Understanding the reason and context behind each prayer and their significance, allowed us to have a deepened prayer. In each mystery, knowing the what, the how and why, showcased Jesus as a relentlessly loving and forgiving saviour. As we prayed the rosary in the church, these mysteries could mean something more, rather than just a ‘moment’ in Jesus’s life.
We thank the teachers and our classmates for providing a most enjoyable and contemplative experience! | Dominique Sarkis and Sophia (Fifi) Kasalo
Year 10 Pilgrimage
Year 10 went to the Australian Catholic University Chapel. The students enjoyed being able to pray the rosary inside the beautiful Chapel.
Years 7-9 Pilgrimage
Students in Years 7 to 9 prayed at various Holy images around our school, this was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to be united and pray together for their intentions and for families in our school community.
