Year 12 Farewell Celebrations
Our end of Year 12 celebrations commenced with our memorable and poignant Valedictory Mass and Dinner, which is one of the highlights of the celebrations that take place at the end of Year 12. We celebrated all that the girls have accomplished during their years at Tangara. We look forward to our Year 12 graduates going out into the world and using all they have learned during their time at Tangara to make a real difference in our world. We continue to support Year 12 with our love and prayers and look forward to hearing about all the great things they are doing after the HSC.
Yesterday, Year 11 put on a beautiful lunch for their “big sisters” to thank them for their contributions to our school over the past thirteen years and to wish them all the best as they move onto the next exciting phase in their lives, and today we ended our celebrations with a farewell concert. The Tangara family gathered to celebrate in true Hollywood style as the Year 12 students put on a spectacular red carpet show and were in turn entertained by each year group.
Congratulations Year 12 Drama Students
We are thrilled to congratulate the following Year 12 Drama students: Matilda Dineen, Ella-Maree James, Therese Meney, and Andrea Stoodley. Their group performance, "Monsters 'n Monsters,'' has been nominated for possible inclusion in the 2023 HSC Showcase season of OnStage at Sydney's Seymour Theatre. Additionally, congratulations to Matilda Dinnen, Keira Sebire, and Andrea Stoodley, whose individual performances have been nominated for possible inclusion in OnSTAGE. Congratulations and thank you to Mrs Herrera for guiding and supporting these students as they prepared and refined their major works.

From the Chaplain
"He wants to warn them of a danger, which is always lurking for us too: letting ourselves get caught up in the frenzy of doing, falling into the trap of activism, where the most important thing is the results we obtain and feeling that we are the absolute protagonists. How often this happens in the Church too: we are busy, we rush, we think that everything depends on us and, in the end, we risk neglecting Jesus". "This is why he invites his followers to rest a little while apart, with him. It is not only physical rest, it is also the rest of the heart. Because it is not enough to 'unplug', we need to really rest. And to do this, we need to go back to the heart of things: to stop, to be silent, to pray, so as not to go from the rush of work to the rush of holidays".
The rest of the heart is a happy expression of what we are looking for when we rest: reflecting and resting on the fact that we are creatures who are sons and daughters of God. And that we should learn to abandon ourselves and everyone entrusted to our care in his hands.
In order to do so, it is important to get physical and bodily rest (more and better sleep, exercise) and to look after our core relationships (husband/wife, kids, extended family, friends) and spend quality time with them. Especially if you have a teenage kid.
And finally, make room for a peaceful Sunday Mass, time for mental prayer and maybe read a spiritual book that nurtures your soul.

Our Special Visitor
Our Special Visitor

Our brave and courageous Henry Field surprised us with a wonderful visit on Tuesday. Henry, dressed in his prep uniform, arrived with his Mummy and brother Jack. Prep Rust children were overjoyed to see their beautiful friend Henry, who they have greatly missed.
Using photos and hand gestures, Henry explained to his friends that he and his family had just returned from a holiday in Queensland. They had an amazing time meeting Batman & Robin and having a chance to experience a close encounter with a dolphin.
Henry and his friends sang Peace Like a River, Mrs. Suters read the children Wombat Stew and finally they enjoyed their fruit break together. We wish Henry all the very best and promise we will continue to pray for his healing. We can’t wait for Henry to visit us again next term.

Teddy Bears' Picnic
Teddy Bears' Picnic
"If you go down to Yarra Hall today, you’re sure of a big surprise."
Kindergarten and Year 1 students, who have given their best effort this term, were invited to our Teddy Bears’ Picnic. The children, accompanied by their own soft toy, enjoyed a picnic of Tiny Teddy biscuits and other treats with their friends. Well done boys and girls.

International Dot Day
International Dot Day
Infants celebrated International Dot Day on Friday 15 September.
The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing.
Kindergarten and Year 1 students participated in a collaborative art display. With a plain paper plate, the children placed their first dot and…. look where their creativity and courage took them.
Our Prep Navy children also created beautiful artwork which is proudly presented on their art gallery wall.

Kindergarten Silver
Kindergarten Silver
It has been a busy term of learning in Kindergarten Silver. In History we have been learning all about family. We brought in our favourite family photos to add to the classroom family tree and shared lovely stories about our families. In English we have been learning how to write an information report and we soon discovered that we love learning facts about Australian animals. We have been experimenting with oil pastels and watercolours in Art to create an artwork inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s iconic 'Sunflowers'. From sharing facts about sharks, gymnastics, and the human body or reading one of our favourite stories, the last week of term is always Kindy Silver’s favourite time to do their news, as it is “free choice” week!

Year 2 Authors Visit
Year 2 Authors Visit
During the week Year 2 girls spent time with Kindergarten by reading their very own stories, which they wrote and illustrated by themselves. The boys and girls were entertained and engaged, as the Year 2 authors read their stories with wonderful expression. Well done and thank you Year 2.

We had many entries for the Brighter Future Competition. What creative artists we have in Primary. Congratulations to all the girls who took advantage of this extension activity. Good luck!
Yr 12 Farewell
One of the beautiful traditions at Tangara is how we farewell our Year 12 class. The students and teachers have put so much work into preparing items for the farewell concert and thoroughly enjoy perforing for them. Each girl in Primary has been given a photograph of a Year 12 girl and has placed this on her desk. These become their ‘prayer sisters’ and they pray specifically for that Yr 12 student each day. The Yr 12 girls hosted a lunchtime Dance Party for the Primary girls last week, with Super Doopers thrown in! How special it is to be part of the Tangara Family.
Excursions
The Year 5 and Year 6 classes have just spent a very enjoyable and educational time on their annual adventures to Bathurst and Canberra. A huge thank you to all the staff members who were involved in organising and attending these excursions. Please enjoy the information and photographs elsewhere in the Rust and Navy.
Summer Uniform
It was great to see the girls in their summer uniform a week earlier than expected. So many girls have grown taller! Over the break, please look at the length of your daughter’s tunic and please lower the hem if need be.

Social Action Expo
Social Action Expo
On Wednesday, 6th September, 12 girls went to the Social Action Expo at the Kings School. We listened to many inspiring speeches and talks. At recess and lunch we had the chance to connect with girls and boys from other schools. We also got to explore the King’s school environment. Later in the day, some of the schools had made stalls where they had lollies and games for us to enjoy. We were all welcome to ask questions about what they were doing to help their school and community. The Tangara girls were all very inspired and came back to school with many ideas. We are all looking forward to helping our school and local community. Thank you to Mrs Byrne and Mrs Dineen for taking us. By Jasmin and Esther (Year 5)

Year 5 Bathhurst Goldfields Excursion
Year 5 Bathhurst Goldfields Excursion
Bathurst Goldfields Excursion Newsletter Report
Last Friday, Year 5 went on an excursion to the Bathurst Goldfields. We experienced what it was like living on the Australian Goldfields in the 1850s, what the miners ate, what games they played and how they fossicked for gold. This was a very fun and exciting experience for the Grade 5s.
“ We are so lucky to have been able to experience gold panning. We went to replicas of real creeks and panned for gold. We each received a clear, plastic vile to put our gold findings in. Along the way, we also found some small pieces of sapphires and quartz. I even heard some of my friends shout, “EUREKA!” meaning, ‘I have found gold!’ Panning for gold was harder than I thought. I kept losing the gold particles right after I found it - as the gold we found was tiny- meaning I didn’t get a chance to shout ‘Eureka’. ” - Selina
“ One of the parts we found most interesting was the way the mineshaft mechanisms worked and what jobs they were used for to make life a little bit easier on the goldfields. Horse drawn whims were used to bring rocks found underground up to the surface to be processed and turned into useful materials like sand. We even learnt an extra fact, it was pretty gross! Did you know, in the early 1800’s they made candles out of animal fat? Just saying that fact sends a shiver up my spine!” - Sophie
“ The hands-on activities were very fun. One of the things we did was make mud bricks and we got our hands very dirty. Some of the other activities were tug of war, cooking delicious - but simple - damper and a few other games.” - Grace

Term 3 Wrap-Up
Term 3 Wrap-Up

Last Wednesday, Jamie S, Grace F and Joelle N from Year 9, were fortunate enough to visit the Melanoma Institute Australia. There we were educated on how to become Sun Safety Student Ambassadors. Melanoma is the most deadly, and third most common form of skin cancer in Australia. We began the seminar and heard from a past skin cancer patient, who was younger than 25 years old. She spoke about how from a young age, she was extremely sun safe, wearing protective clothing, and avoided exposure to the sun whenever possible. Somehow, she still managed to get skin cancer, which affected her future. This made us reflect on how we can influence our decisions to be more aware of how we can be protected from the UV rays. Following this we discussed the importance of presentation skills. We were taught how to present without using filler words such as “ummm” and “like”. We then learnt the causes of melanoma, and the risks of having it, along with who can get it, which is anyone. We were presented a slideshow on the topic of melanoma, and were then paired up with another school to present the same presentation back to the audience. We had to perform this in an engaging manner, connecting to the audience. We also looked at melanoma under the microscope and observed our skin for any moles that we could check. Towards the end of the day we developed an action plan that could be implemented to improve the sun protection at Tangara which will be revealed during our presentation to the school. Overall, it was an amazing and memorable experience that really impacted our future decisions on how we should protect ourselves from sunlight. The purpose of this was to spread awareness of the dangers of melanoma to young people, in an attempt to reach out and reduce the chances of others getting this skin cancer, by encouraging the utilisation of sun protection and providing advice. We look forward to delivering this presentation at the Secondary school assembly. Thank you to Miss Tropea for organising this excursion and for attending with us on the day.

Ultimate frisbee experience
Ultimate frisbee experience

Tangara have been lucky enough to have an experienced ultimate frisbee coach from an organisation known as Australian Flying Disc Association to run a few workshops with some high school students on how to play the game of ultimate frisbee. One of the first things that new players notice about ultimate frisbee and other flying disc sports is that they are completely self-officiated. That means, all players are entrusted to play fairly and within the rules and are required to resolve any on-field disputes themselves, without the help of a referee. The flying disc community refers to this concept as “Spirit of the Game”. Through Spirit of the Game, ultimate frisbee helps players to develop a variety of skills that are helpful on and off the field, including good communication, conflict resolution, reasoning, ethics and cooperation. Here is what one of our participants had to say about the ultimate frisbee workshops:

Year 12 Pilgrimage
Year 12 Pilgrimage
Year 12 went on a Pilgrimage to last Friday 15 September, A very special feast day, Our Lady of Sorrows. We had a beautiful time, we attended Mass and Fr Barakat from St. Marys gave a very inspiring homily on Our Lady and how she will accompany us through life with all our sufferings when we take our sorrows to the foot of the cross of Our Lord Jesus. After the Mass, we went to kneel down and pray the rosary and Fr Barakat came and spoke to us again, he had a wonderful impact on the girls, and some girls asked him for a blessing.

Market Day
Market Day
After weeks of meticulous planning and hard work, Market Day commenced on Monday the 11th of September. With a wide variety of unique stalls and products managed by the Year 9 Commerce class, Market Day was organised with the aim of developing our budding entrepreneurship skills and financial ability. With the tremendous support and engagement of the Tangara community, we are thrilled to announce that we have raised an incredible total of $5000! These funds will be donated to the Brainchild Foundation.
The Brainchild Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing emotional, financial and educational support to the families of children who have been diagnosed with brain and spinal cord tumours. They work to raise awareness about paediatric brain and spine tumours, their impact on children and families, and the need for increased research and funding; organising various events, campaigns, and educational initiatives. Together, we can help create a positive change & empower the most vulnerable in our community.
A special thanks to Mrs Milicevic for organising the event and constantly supporting us throughout this endeavour. And again, a big thank you for all of the support from the Tangara Community in our businesses. The money you have helped us raise will now help families be able to raise their children.

Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is back at Tangara!!
If you are able to help with Operation Christmas Child, please come to the library and collect your shoebox!
Each Christmas, Samaritan’s Purse organises a program, Operation Christmas Childthat encourages those who have...to give to those who do not. It partners with local churches in developing nations to reach out to children by providing gift-filled shoeboxes and exposing them to the love of God.
How can you help?
From this week we will have 120 flat pack shoe boxes with information brochures at the Library. If you would like to participate in this project, please ask your child to collect a shoebox and information brochure from the library. You will need to know How to pack a shoeboxand What goes in my shoebox?
On top of the cost of items bought to put in the shoebox, there is also a $12.50 postage and handling fee. If a donation is completed online for your physical shoe box, you are able to track where your shoe box gets delivered - this is exciting as a family to watch! A new feature: Samaritan’s Purse has an option to pack an Operation Christmas Child shoe box online, if you do not want to go to the shops. Click hereto read more about this option.
Boxes are due back at the end of Week 3 in Term 4 (Friday, 27 October 2023). Hoping that you will get involved in this worthwhile cause. Should you have any further questions, please email me at samantha.ellis@tangara.nsw.edu.au

Anglicare
Over the past 6 weeks, 8 year 11 students have been participating in an Intergenerational Program at Anglicare in Castle Hill. This is a program designed to help stimulate and maintain the cognitive skills of the elderly.
Each student was paired up, based on interests and personality, with an elderly resident who they visited for one afternoon a week for 6 weeks.
Over this time the girls were able to interact and connect with their “Golden Oldie” and the beginnings of real friendships started to bloom.
The elderly residents looked forward to the girls arriving each week and the great boost in joy and zest for living that they brought with them each time.
The girls in turn enjoyed the warmth, wisdom and gratitude that the elderly residents showered on them.
Overall this was a very successful program and both our students and the elderly residents have learnt and been able to give new things to each other and have benefited enormously.
Each girl said today at the conclusion of the official 6 week program that they will definitely be continuing to visit their new “old” friend!
