The Gift of Friendship
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role as Principal is the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of individuals, including students of all ages, parents, and staff. Last Wednesday, as I strolled from one end of the school to the other, I was warmly greeted by a delightful group of Year 2 students. Their infectious happiness caught my attention, prompting me to inquire about the source of their boundless joy. To my amazement, one young girl promptly responded, "It's because we are friends and we make each other happy."
This encounter brought to mind an insightful article I came across recently by psychologist Andrew Fuller titled "How to Make Friends." In his piece, Fuller emphasises the connection between our happiness and the quality of our friendships. Whether one is naturally sociable or more inclined toward solitude, the value of friendships cannot be overstated. Embracing the company of those around us, whether at school, work, or in our daily lives, is one of the simplest ways to maintain engagement and enthusiasm. Andrew offers valuable tips not only on making new friends but also on repairing and strengthening existing friendships.
In our school community, the bonds of friendship among students are not only heartwarming but also essential to their overall well-being and academic success. As we foster these relationships, we contribute to a positive and supportive environment that enhances the growth and happiness of our children. Included here is a list of TIPSfrom Fuller that will help you support your child with developing friendships, and help mend them when there have been misunderstandings.
On the note of friendship, we welcome all former Tangara Parents to a special Mass this Saturday at 9.30am in our school Chapel followed by morning tea. A wonderful opportunity to catch up with “old” friends!
November - All Saints Day and All Souls
Last Wednesday 1 November, the Church celebrated the Solemnity of All Saints and at Tangara we marked this day with a whole School Mass. This special day is dedicated to honouring and remembering all the saints, both known and unknown, who have made a profound impact through their faith and virtuous lives. The Infants children came dressed as their favourite saint where they had an opportunity to reflect on the exemplary qualities and values exhibited by these saints and how their legacies continue to inspire us. It was an absolute pleasure to be present at the parade and see the various saints that were represented.
At Tangara, we often promote the Universal Call to Holiness, and explain to our students that we should all aim for "ordinary holiness", that is, trying to be the best version of ourselves, by loving God and others and doing our everyday work well. All Saints' Day serves as a reminder of the power of faith, love, and service, and it inspires us to follow in the footsteps of those who have set remarkable examples of kindness and devotion.
Let us also remember during this month to unite in prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, recalling all members of our families who have gone before us.
World Teachers Day
Friday 27 October marked World Teacher’s Day. It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and thank our highly professional, talented, dedicated and incredibly wise and knowledgeable teachers who have opened the minds and touched the hearts’ of literally thousands of Tangara
girls over the past 40 years. Tangara promotes a love of learning and this is evident by the attitude and effort of our students and the manner in which our teachers approach their profession. Our teachers also love to teach, and they care deeply about each individual child in their classes.
Thank you to all our teachers and staff who turn up every day not just to carry out their profession but to live out their vocation. Thank you to our Class Parent Representatives who on behalf of all our parents provided delicious morning tea items for our staff to enjoy. Your support and partnership is crucial in helping each member of our school community reach their full potential.
Exams Years 5-10
In the coming weeks, our students in Years 5-10 will embark on their end-of-year examinations. We acknowledge that our students may experience a range of pressures during this period. It is crucial that we offer our support in helping them manage stress and anxiety, for exams, much like other challenges in life, provide an opportunity to put into action the virtues of resilience, fortitude, and determination. Success in exams is closely linked to a well-structured and consistent study routine, along with maintaining good eating and sleeping habits and incorporating regular exercise. If your child is facing difficulties or needs additional guidance during this time, please don't hesitate to reach out to their mentor for extra support and advice.

We are approaching the end of the academic year and I would like to reflect on an ordinary feature of our life that at the end of the year becomes more relevant. I am referring to tiredness.
It is a fact that tiredness is part and parcel of our experience as human beings. We get tired at the end of every day: by Thursday we are thinking: thank God tomorrow is Friday. And at the end of the year, our mind goes too often to summer time. It is normal and it is a good thing because it means that we are all workers and whoever works, gets tired.
Tiredness is a situation that can help us to gauge if we have a well-determined ideal capable of guiding our whole life. What do I mean by that? Maybe a short tale can help to understand. It was the Middle Ages in Europe, a time in which the great stone cathedrals like Cologne, Notre Dame or Burgos were being built. A peasant went to visit a quarry with many stonecutters carving the stone. He came to one of them and asked: "what are you doing?" The stone cutter, not on a friendly face, answered with annoyance: "Don't you see. I am carving stone". Then, our peasant bumped into another cutter and asked the same question. This second one, in a friendlier manner, responded: "I am providing food for my family". Lastly, the peasant came to a cutter who seemed to be focused and humming at the same time. "What are you doing?" "What am I doing?" he replied in surprise. "I am building a cathedral".
When we work we have the chance to transform what we do in love. Of course we carve stones, we provide food for our family but we are doing much more than that: we are loving specific people with names and faces. And it is worthwhile getting tired. The three cutters are going to get the same tiredness at the end of the day but the first would be less meaningful than the third and he would easily fall into a spiral of complaints.
And as Christians, we are doing much more than loving: we are bringing the Love of God to this earth through what we do and we are getting closer to heaven. When we let Jesus transform the deepest intentions of our actions, our work becomes prayer and we find rest in Him.

World Teachers' Day
World Teachers' Day

Thank you to everyone who contributed to World Teachers’ Day in recognising our amazing Infants teachers, who go above and beyond for students every day. We were spoilt with treats and beautiful messages.
Our Infants' children performed a beautiful song to the teachers and tried to be as well behaved as possible for the day.
A special thank you to our class parents, Year 12 representatives and Tangara’s Creative Arts Captain, Sophia Kasalo, who prepared a scrumptious morning tea.

All Saints Day
All Saints Day
During the week, children have been learning about saints. We have been discussing how the saints in Heaven are wonderful role models for us all and how they are our friends and cheer leaders in Heaven.
On Wednesday we celebrated All Saints Day. The children happily arrived at school dressed as their favourite saints. It was wonderful to listen to our ‘little saints in the making’ introduce themselves as their chosen saint. We had a wonderful audience for our grand parade as Fr. John, Fr. Paul, Mrs. Sakr, Mrs. Dineen and all the primary girls joined in the celebration of All Saints Day in Infants.
A special thank you to our wonderful parents for all the effort that went into the costumes, as it made a special day even more special.

Kindergarten White
Kindergarten White
It has been a busy term so far in Kindergarten White.
In History we have started our unit learning about our families. We will be looking into the past as well as where they were born and raised. We also started the term by observing the types of celebrations our families celebrate. Kindergarten White have been very excited about this unit and we decided to perform our annual assembly item on Monday of Week 3, around families and how our families celebrate. During newstime, the students have been very excited about sharing pictures of their families celebrating a special event. This has led to some great discussion.
In English, we have been learning how to write recounts. The students have been doing a wonderful job, we started off by discussing our morning routine and the students have been able to write a recount of events that take place each morning before they arrive at school.
In Science, the students have begun learning about the observable properties of materials. Last week, students took a walk around the school and discussed and observed the different types of materials they observed in their playground by using their senses. We created a word wall and took pictures of the students identifying the different materials in their playground.
In art, the students have been learning about the Renaissance. We have been discussing that during this time, many artists painted pictures using a great amount of detail. We also discussed one of the famous artists in the Renaissance period, Michelangelo. The students took a walk to the chapel to observe and describe the paintings that they see in our chapel. The students then drew their own renaissance inspired drawing of Mother Mary and Baby Jesus.
The students have settled into term 4 wonderfully and we are looking forward to all of the fun learning we will continue throughout the term.

2 Navy
2 Navy
It has been a chocolate theme in 2 Navy this term as we explore our modelled text- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This classic Roald Dahl book inspired our Maths and Writing Lessons too.
We imagined what school would be like if Mr Willy Wonka made one entirely out of chocolate! We tried some of the tasks we thought the chocolate school might include:
In Maths we examined estimation, division, repeated subtraction and arrays using scrumptious M&Ms. We also explored the area of a surface using informal and formal units, using and manipulating chocolate squares and blocks.
In Writing lessons we learnt about the structure of a persuasive text using the OREO analogy. The acronym OREO helps to remember how to write a persuasive text.
O- stands for Opinion
R – stands for Reason
E- stands for Explanation
And the last O in OREO stands for the opinion re-instated.
And you guessed it – they built OREO structures to represent the text structure. Sometimes we have extra RE in the OREO for extra reasons and explanations, so the girls built the ORE RE RE Os with extra middles to represent the extra reasons and explanations.
The students in Year 2 then wrote a persuasive letter to Mr Willy Wonka asking him to build the first chocolate classroom. They used the O RE RE RE O structure, high modality words, rhetorical questions and emotive language to write wonderful letters.
2 Navy girls are vibrant, enthusiastic, and dramatic, therefore performing assembly items is a highlight for them. Their Assembly this term was also based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and what the first chocolate school would be like. The girls made costumes and props out of paper mache, moving boxes and chocolate wrappers, wrote scripts and thoroughly loved the entire experience. I think we will see some of these girls on the big screen one day!
Learning would be wonderful in a real Mr Wonka chocolate school, but we also think learning is fantastic at Tangara!

World Teachers’ Day
I wanted to express my gratitude for the support and kindness you showed in the celebration of World Teachers' Day. Your generosity in providing such a delicious morning tea and tokens of appreciation touched the hearts of all the teachers. The senior girls worked with our Primary Sports Captains to decorate our building and set a beautiful table to make the morning tea extra special. Our captains delivered lovely speeches mentioning how much care and love their teachers show each day.
Writing Focus
I welcomed some lovely Yr 2 visitors last week who read to me some a piece of persuasive writing they had written. We were also treated to the Yr 5 assembly item which showcased how to write procedure. Early development of writing skills lays the foundation for effective communication and critical thinking. It not only aids in expressing thoughts and feelings but also enhances fine motor skills and creativity. Keep up the great work girls!
All Saints Day
The primary girls were very happy to provide an audience for the Infants All Saints Parade on Wednesday. What a wonderful array of saints were displayed! As Mrs McAuliffe reminded everyone, the saints are cheering us on from Heaven!
Giving Girls
Please enjoy the article that follows about the Giving Girls social action group.

The Giving Girls
The Giving Girls
We have begun a social action group at Tangara called the Giving Girls. Some girls in Year 4 and some girls in Year 5 meet with Mrs Dineen every week. We have decided to start a project that will hopefully raise money for those in need and also do something nice for the elderly people in nursing homes.
We are designing Christmas cards that we will sell and we can use the money to give a donation to a charity we choose. We will also write Christmas cards for those elderly people who do recieve any cards.
We are very excited about all the things we can do for others.

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue we have been focussing on in the Junior School
Definition:
People who have self mastery see the bigger picture and are willing to delay instant gratification for long term fulfillment. Developing this virtue often means doing the exact opposite of what you naturally feel like doing.
Why do we need it?
Those people who live with self mastery tend to lead happier and more fulfilled lives because they finish things and reap the benefits of a job well done.
I am practicing self mastery when I:
· Use detachment so my emotions won’t control me
· Speak and act calmly when I am hurt or angry
· Get things done in an orderly and efficient way
· Create routines for myself
· Do what is expected without people having to remind me
· Do things on time
Where does Self Mastery fit?
Self Mastery
Self discipline
Focus
Persistence
Orderliness
Determination
Perseverance
Stickability
Commitment
For older students:
😊Do I consider myself a person in control of their decisions?
😊How do I resist temptations?
😊 What is an area in my life that I could be more moderate or self controlled?

World Teacher's Day
Thank you to the Secondary students and parents for preparing a beautiful morning tea for the staff last Friday on World Teacher's Day. Our School and Vice Captain delivered a beautiful speech about how much the students feel cared for and supported by their teachers each day. The Secondary Staff were also delighted to receive an artwork on behalf of the Secondary students of our crest, in which the leaves symbolise the fingerprints of each student in Secondary. We are definitely fortunate to work in a school with such a strong partnership between parents, staff and students.
