Highlights of Term 1
As we near the end of Term 1, we reflect with gratitude on the multitude of learning experiences that have enriched our students' holistic development. From Naplan exams to assessments, guest speakers, camps, retreats, and a plethora of outdoor activities, including our swimming carnival and cross country events, Tangara has been buzzing with activity. Our students have also excelled in representative sports such as swimming, basketball, tennis, cross country, and triathlon, along with participating in the Duke of Edinburgh program. In the realm of public speaking, our girls have shone in the ISDA competition and mock trial, with representation at the National Student Constitutional Convention.
Moreover, our secondary students have actively engaged in community service initiatives like the intergenerational program, Works of Mercy challenge, and Vinnies Van outreach. This is just a glimpse of our collective achievements, and it's no wonder we're all looking forward to a well-deserved break. I commend our students for their enthusiastic participation and our dedicated staff for their unwavering support and guidance throughout the term. Together, these opportunities foster positive habits and cultivate character growth in our students.
Additionally, this week marks a bittersweet moment as we say farewell to Mrs Nassif, who has served Tangara for the past 15 years. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for her dedication, commitment and invaluable contributions to our school community, and wish her all the best as she commences a new chapter in her professional life at Montgrove next term. We will miss you Mrs Nassif!
Professional Development of our staff
As part of our comprehensive professional development program spanning from Kindergarten to Year 12, all our staff actively engage in various PD in areas, including student wellbeing, innovation and technology, best practice pedagogy, curriculum, and leadership. Many of our Year 12 teachers have once again been accepted by NESA to participate in HSC marking which stands out as one of the most impactful forms of professional development for senior teachers. Congratulations to the followings staff members who have been accepted to participate in HSC marking later this year:
Mrs De Kock - Physics
Mrs El-Rahi - Modern History
Mrs Engesser - Visual Art
Mrs Herrera - Drama
Mrs Lazaris - Ancient History
Mrs Mitchell - Geography
Mr Richardson - Music
Mrs Sahni - Business Studies
Mrs Souvaliotis - Music
At Tangara, we place great importance on acknowledging and valuing our teachers as essential members of our community, appreciating their ongoing dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to fostering the holistic growth of our students. In a society where teachers are at times not valued as they should be, I am pleased to announce that Fleur Tropea (Head of Secondary) has been recognised by AISNSW for her outstanding commitment to the teaching profession as part of their 'Celebrating Teachers in Independent Schools' initiative.
This recognition serves as a testament to Fleur's unwavering pastoral and educational dedication to our staff, students, and families. Many of our staff were nominated for this recognition, but each school can only have one publicly recognised. To all our staff, the valuable contributions each of you makes to the teaching profession, particularly within our school community, are much appreciated.
Hillszone Triathlon
Despite the challenging weather conditions last Thursday, our girls demonstrated true Tangara spirit, exhibiting fortitude and resilience at last week’s Hills Zone Triathlon competition. Congratulations to all our competitors for their remarkable efforts:
Intermediate Individual Performance - Clare Tanna finished 4th
Junior - Tangara Team 1 finished 16th (Candiace Zhu, Caitlyn Cheah & Caitlyn Au)
Junior - Tangara Team 2 finished 7th (Clara Mulkeen-Suarez, Isabella Raad & Yumin Oh)
Intermediate - Tangara Team 3 finished 2nd (Olivia Siau, Clare Tanna & Caitlin Nisbet)
Mock Trial
Last Tuesday evening our students participated in the Mock Trial competition where they were up against our brother school, Redfield College. In a thrilling showdown marked by intense cross-examination from the opposing team, our students showcased remarkable resilience and brilliance in defending our case. Despite facing significant challenges, they concluded the night with a nail-biting finish, with only a 6-point difference. This victory stands as a testament to their collective hard work, teamwork, and the passionate execution of their legal defense. Congratulations girls - we look forward to the upcoming rounds next term!
Tangara’s Got Talent
Throughout Term 1, Tangara's Got Talent lit up our Fridays with vibrant performances and incredible displays of talent from students across Years 7 to 12. We couldn't be prouder of the students who showcased their skills, demonstrating remarkable resilience, courage, and confidence on stage. Their performances not only entertained us but also served as a powerful reminder of the depth of talent within our school community. I was also proud to be present and witness the unity among the girls, bringing them together to support and celebrate each other's talents. Well done to all our performers!
See you next Term - Tuesday 30 April
During the school holidays, it's a great opportunity to engage in different activities, such as enjoying the outdoors, visiting museums or places of interest, spending quality time with family and friends, watching good wholesome movies and enjoying some time reading. Wishing you all a restful break and I encourage our students to limit their screen time and explore diverse experiences that can enhance their well-being and broaden their life experiences. Looking forward to seeing you all in Term 2 on Tuesday 30 April in full winter uniform.

From the Chaplain
The Lord Jesus is risen, he is alive. This is the source of our joy these days. Once more we are surprised and empowered in our faith by the fact that it is Jesus who believes in each one of us, who hopes in our freedom to love and who loves us against all odds. Pope Francis invited us, many years now, to experience a new encounter with Jesus:
"I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord”.The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms. Now is the time to say to Jesus: “Lord, I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways I have shunned your love, yet here I am once more, to renew my covenant with you. I need you. Save me once again, Lord, take me once more into your redeeming embrace”. How good it feels to come back to him whenever we are lost! Let me say this once more: God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy."
In order to experience that encounter with the Lord, we don't have to think of something difficult. It is a question of prayer: to kneel before the Lord in humble openness of heart and stop being self-reliant and proud. And accept that we don't have all the answers and that we need to receive the light and grace from Jesus to live according to divine wisdom.

What a great term it has been, although we aren’t exactly sure where it has gone! As we reflect upon the achievement of all our Infants children, it has been wonderful to see how quickly they have settled into routines in a short period of time.
Easter Hat Parade
There was a buzz and an excitement in the air on Holy Wednesday as our Infants children eagerly arrived at school to perform and showcase their creativity at the Easter Hat Parade. Our children had practiced with their lovely music teacher, Mrs Goldsworthy to learn the words and actions to the songs. The Year 1 students helped us with the true meaning of Easter by explaining the Easter Symbols.
Project Compassion
Our water Tapitas droplet appeal highlighted what one little person in partnership with others can in fact do. Together we took part in an initiative by Caritas Australia and raised over $1,000. This money will be donated to those communities who are without clean drinking water.
A special thank you to all the families who got involved and supported the children with the challenge of doing jobs at home and raising money to donate.
Lenten Colouring- in competition
And the winners are…
Prep Rust: Mikayla Widjaja
Kindergarten: Cecilia Mitri
Year 1: Oliver-James Saab
Thank you to all our artists who entered the Lenten colouring-in competition and to those who contributed to our water droplet appeal. You generously raised money for others who are in need. As Jesus said, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me'” (Matthew 25:40)
Inquisitive Minds
To compliment and enrich our students and their understanding towards problem-solving in Maths last week, Kindergarten and Year 1 were part of an engaging workshop. They experienced various stimulating, fun, hands-on activities presented by Inquisitive Minds.
Recognising our achievements
At our Infants Assembly we recognise the efforts of our students in all aspects of school life. This week we congratulated the students who received awards at our school assembly and celebrated the Superstar Award winners. Our Superstar Awards are given to children who are displaying acts of kindness and modelling virtues in and around the playground. These stars are placed and collected in our star boxes and accumulate throughout the term. This term our Navy classes received the most awards and have earned an extra 20 minutes of playtime next week for their effort and hard work.
Teddy Bears Picnic
Next Tuesday 9 April, nominated children from Kindergarten and Year 1 are invited to attend the quarterly Teddy Bears’ Picnic. The Teddy Bears’ picnic celebrates the wonderful effort our students have given to school life throughout the term.
WRAP Information Evening
To gain a better understanding of how WRAP best supports your child when learning to read, write and spell, you are warmly invited to attend a WRAP information and demonstration evening on Tuesday 9 April @ 7:00pm. The evening will include a demonstration lesson where you will have the opportunity to participate as your child does in class.

1 White's Writing Journey
1 White's Writing Journey
This term, 1 White has been busy learning about recount writing. We have engaged with stories such as Edward the Emu and Edwina the Emu by Sheena Knowles, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and The Everywhere Bear by Julia Donaldson. Our students have been practising sequencing events and using time connectives and adjectives to write compelling recounts.
To celebrate our progress, 1 White will be performing a Reader's Theatre of Maurice Sendak's, Where the Wild Things Are, at the Week 10 assembly. Join us as we bring this classic to life, showcasing our passion for storytelling and creativity.

Parent Teacher Interviews
A letter will be sent this week outlining the details of the Yr 2 – 6 Parent Teacher Interviews. These take place in Week 2 of Term 2 and are invaluable opportunities to hear an update from the class teacher as well as setting a goal for the term ahead.
Map of Jerusalem
Leading to Easter, Year 6 enjoyed exploring a 3D map of Jerusalem during Jesus’s time. From this map we could track where Jesus would have travelled during Holy Week. We also had many opportunities to contemplate these events and grow in understanding for the most important liturgical celebration in the Church’s year.
Project Compassion Colouring Competition
Congratulations to the winners of the Project Compassion Colouring Competition. There were many lovely entries. The best part being that we raised much needed funds for those who are less fortunate. It also raised awareness for poverty in our world.

I am a Tangara Girl
In each edition of the Rust and Navy I have been outlining the six features of what makes a Tangara Girl. As I mentioned previously, these are displayed beautifully in the Namoi Building. This week is another important area: I am a Tangara Girl: I show love of God by Caring for people and his Creation. We always encourage the girls to look after each other and our surroundings. Often teachers comment on the generosity of girls who pick up rubbish in our playground and make a concerted effort to keep our school clean and tidy. Well done girls!
Inquisitive Minds
Please enjoy the article elsewhere in the Rust and Navy regarding this lively incursion. There was a real sense of excitement and electricity in the air as the girls worked through the challenges.
Many thanks for your support and kindness throughout the term. I wish you all a wonderful break and look forward to all Term 2 has to offer.

Year 6R
Year 6R
6 Rust has had a great start to the year!
This term we have taken part in the Virtual Reality STEAM Program.
In this program students have learnt how to use virtual reality technology and to create a three-dimensional world based on the solar system. They have utilised block coding to add functionality to their own virtual world.
Inquistitive Minds
Students participated in Inquisitive Minds - this complements and enriches our students understanding of problem solving in mathematics. Inquisitive minds provided quality, fun hands-on Maths lessons and competitions which build a passion for Maths and Problem Solving.

Easter Baskets: Year 4 Religion
Easter Baskets: Year 4 Religion
During Holy Week, Year 4 spent some time making Easter baskets for our neighbours, friends in need and the elderly.
We carefully planned our baskets and filled them up with some goodies. Some of us gave up our own treats and added them to the baskets.

Junior School Curriculum News
Junior School Curriculum News

It has been a very busy but fruitful term for both students and teachers.
Our 3-6 teachers have dedicated themselves tirelessly since the end of 2023 and throughout the Christmas break to ensure the successful implementation of the new English and Mathematics Syllabus for 2024. While our K-2 teachers have also been diligently refining their programs, having annotated them last year to ensure they align even more effectively with the curriculum requirements for this year. It is through their hard work, and genuine passion for teaching that have kept our students engaged and fostered a love for learning in our classrooms.
Similar to that of the K-2 English and Mathematics syllabuses, the new 3-6 English and Mathematics syllabuses emphasize the importance of explicit teaching. Fortunately, at our school, the WRAP program which we have been implementing for many years aligns well with the new requirements. Furthermore, we have actively participated in the AIS Primary Numeracy Project. This project offers a comprehensive professional learning package designed to support schools in implementing explicit and systematic teaching methods for numeracy skills.
Our K-6 students recently had the opportunity to participate in an engaging Mathematics Incursion facilitated by Inquisitive Minds. During this event, our Kindergarten and Year 1 students embarked on a Planks Building Session, where they tackled a variety of creative building challenges. Year 2 students delved into visual problem-solving, puzzles, and logic activities, while our Year 3-6 students immersed themselves in a series of math activities and brain teasers, emphasizing the importance of strategic problem-solving approaches. The students were highly involved in problem-solving tasks and investigations, and each activity was designed to cater to all ability levels.
A special thanks goes to the Year 9 and Year 10 students who assisted during the Inquisitive Minds Incursion. Their support in marking and guiding the primary students through each task contributed significantly to the success of the workshop, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for all.

Many thanks to all of our staff, students and parents for a wonderful first term. We wish everyone an enjoyable and restful break! We look forward to welcoming the girls back to school for Term 2 in their full winter uniform on Tuesday 30 April.

Creative and Performing Arts
Primary and Infants Class Music
Primary and Infants Class Music
The joy of making music was evident on the faces of our Year 1 and 2 students, as they played ostinato patterns on xylophone, boom whackers, chime bars, guiro and maracas.
Singing the traditional music game, “Acka Backa Soda Cracker”, one child walked around the circle pointing to each student on the beat. On “Out goes you!” the chosen student joined a percussion train to accompany the singing. This was a wonderful way for students to demonstrate their understanding of the melodic and rhythmic elements we have learnt this term.

World eBooks & PRC
World eBooks & PRC
All students in Kindergarten to Year 12 have access to World Book, which is a digital learning platform that produces high quality nonfiction, mixed-genre children's books and reference material. One component of this platform is World eBooks, where students are able to read books online. It is more suited to students in Kindergarten to Year 6. Some of these ebooks have a 'read aloud' feature where students can listen to and follow online what is being read. Many of these books count towards the Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC). Please find the list 2024 PRC eBooks attached. Students can access World eBooks through their student homepage or via this link.
I would like to encourage students to enjoy reading for pleasure over the school holiday break because as the quote goes: "Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body." - Joseph Addison

Captains' Corner
Captains' Corner
Captains' Corner
My name is Liana Tedesco and I am Tangara’s Sports Captain. My passion for sport began at a very young age of 5, where I began my gymnastics career at YMCA Epping. From there my love for sport grew as my gymnastics progressed. I represented Epping YMCA in many competitions, with my favourite memory being able to compete in the NSW Gymnastics State Championships and my team and I placed 3rd. As well as this, I also enjoy participating in other sports like netball, touch football, and triathlons. I am now a gymnastics coach at YMCA which allows me to teach and educate other young girls who also enjoy the sport. My aim as sports captain is to allow the Tangara community to become more involved in sports by not only participating but also cheering and being involved in the event. As well as, to remind the girls that when participating in sport, the respected value of commitment is held in high regard. So far this year, we have had great results in the swimming carnival, cross country, and triathlon. Especially with many girls representing Tangara at Hillzone and ACIES already, I am looking forward to a year of sports with the winter season soon to begin!
My name is Victoria-Rose Saliba and I am honoured to be the 2024 Atlantis House Captain. For as long as I can remember I have always been surrounded by sport, whether it be competing, training or watching. Sport has always been an escapism allowing me to have a break from the hectic schedules of school life. I enjoy doing new sports and learning new skills that I can adapt to the various sports I partake in. Throughout my life, I have participated in netball, swimming, touch football, squash, tennis and many more. This is my 10th year playing netball and I have been lucky enough to be involved in the Representative netball teams at HDNA for 5 years. It has allowed me to form meaningful friendships as well as develop important time management skills by juggling training, school and family. Together with the house captains, we aim to instil good sportsmanship within the girls, encouraging them to strive to do their best in all forms of sports but above all to have fun. I look forward to working with the secondary and primary students throughout the year!!
