Happy Birthday Tangara!
Today marks Tangara’s 42nd birthday. We have come a long way since that first day at Fox Valley Road, with two teachers, seventeen students and twelve families. While many things have changed since then, what makes Tangara special has not. This is one of the messages from the recent parent, student and teacher surveys. There was strong endorsement for the two essential elements at the heart of our School: the Mentoring System and our living Catholic faith. There were also many good ideas for growth and improvement. I look forward to sharing more with you at our KPF this evening at 7.30pm in Yarra Hall.
Pope Francis declares 2024 a Year of Prayer
Pope Francis has asked that 2024 be marked as a Year of Prayer. There is definitely so much to pray for - our families, our school community and for our world. Anything can become a prayer, according to St Josemaría. “Look for holiness in the middle of the world,” he says. At the kitchen sink, in the office, at our desk. Done with love and care, daily tasks become the means of our path to holiness. Prayer doesn’t stop when work begins. So in this year dedicated to prayer, don’t let time be an excuse but rather let’s use every opportunity to pray and become the person God has called us to be.
Kick Starting Study Skills
This week Elevate Education began its series of workshops for Years 7 to 12. Elevate has researched the study habits of thousands of past students. Our girls will learn the skills and secrets they need to maximise their marks. Teaching these habits early, and reinforcing them, equips our girls with the confidence and skills they need to achieve their personal best throughout Secondary, to the HSC and beyond. The skills are being reinforced by the mentors, who are helping the girls set realistic, but challenging goals for Term 1. Parents, it always helps when you show your interest with a follow up conversation with your child.
Growing in Virtue Everyday
And there is lots more to talk about with your son or daughter ... in the Junior School, the virtue focus this term is Teamwork, with themes of cooperation, listening and unity. In our Secondary character program, REAL, the theme is ‘The Power of Perseverance, Optimism and a Growth Mindset.’ The students will be workshopping how to live the virtues online.
Online Safety
Keeping our children safe is our number one priority and this includes helping to keep them safe online. The beginning of school is the perfect time to have conversations with your children about online safety. The eSafety Commissioner (eSafety.gov.au) has practical resources to help with hard-to-have conversations, information for children under 5 and cyberbullying. To learn more, visit eSafety parents. Our KPF in Term 2 will be dedicated to equipping our parents with the latest information and strategies to help keep your children safe online and we will continue to share relevant resources to support our parents.
I am looking forward to catching up with parents tonight at our first KPF. It is a great opportunity for us all to reconnect and launch into 2024. See you tonight!

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. And with it comes Lent, this special time of the year in which we prepare ourselves to be witnesses and receptors of the outpouring of God's Love in Jesus Christ. The mystery of his Death and Resurrection out of Love for every single person bewilders us. So what can we do to respond to such a Love?
Pope Francis encourages us to stop, to pause:
"It is time to act, and in Lent, to act also means to pause. To pause in prayer, in order to receive the word of God, to pause like the Samaritan in the presence of a wounded brother or sister. Love of God and love of neighbour are one love. Not to have other gods is to pause in the presence of God beside the flesh of our neighbour. For this reason, prayer, almsgiving and fasting are not three unrelated acts, but a single movement of openness and self-emptying, in which we cast out the idols that weigh us down, the attachments that imprison us. Then the atrophied and isolated heart will revive. Slow down, then, and pause! The contemplative dimension of life that Lent helps us to rediscover will release new energies. In the presence of God, we become brothers and sisters, more sensitive to one another: in place of threats and enemies, we discover companions and fellow travelers. This is God’s dream, the promised land to which we journey once we have left our slavery behind."
In this year which Pope Francis has desired to be the Year of Prayer, we can make room for a 15 minutes silent time of prayer. Maybe we can cut short the time we spend on social media to enter in this adventure of silence to encounter Jesus. And Jesus will free us from our selfish self that perceives reality many times in a distorted way. And we will be able to see brothers and sisters instead of competitors, enemies or just people that make our lives difficult.

This week our Kindergarten children joined us for their first week of school. Starting Kindergarten can be a big leap for our young students, but it's also a time for bravery and new adventures. Our dedicated teachers and staff are committed to creating a nurturing environment where every child feels valued, supported, and encouraged to explore and learn. School is a place for learning and creating memories, and the Infants team will ensure we excel in both these important aspects.
Overall, our youngest students from Prep and Kindergarten were excited to jump into the new year and hear about the many adventures awaiting them. Fingers crossed they realise they need to come back next week!
The way all the children transitioned to school this week is a credit to all our mums and dads who have played an invaluable role in building their confidence and courage.
We look forward to meeting with you tonight at our KPF where you will have an opportunity to meet with your child’s class teacher.

Fabulous News
Last year many of our students took part in the Faber Castell Create a Brighter Future Competition. We received the fabulous news that our very own Anisha had been awarded Runner Up of Year 3 and 4. This is a huge achievement as this was a national competition. Anisha received a wonderful prize which was awarded to her during our Assembly on Friday. Congratulations Anisha!
Curriculum Overviews
You will receive the Term 1 Curriculum Overview via Engage shortly. This document outlines some useful information about the term ahead, including the topics that will be covered in each subject.
Pride in our Uniform
I mentioned last week that we had a new display in the Namoi Building. This display outlines various aspects of what it is to be a Tangara Girl. One of the images states: I am a Tangara Girl, I look after my Uniform and wear it with Pride. It has been a joy to see such care being taken with all the details of the uniform. Well done girls. Thank you for helping the children feel proud of their school.
Lenten Colouring Competition
We look forward to our Ash Wednesday Mass this week. As we begin Lent we will be focusing on Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. We will be a holding a colouring competition in the Primary School to raise money for the poor. Entries can be purchased for $2 from Mrs Crawford, and winners will be selected before Easter. We will also have Caritas Charity Boxes in each classroom for donations.
Monitors
We look forward to appointing our Semester 1 Monitors shortly. A monitor is given greater responsibility to help teachers maintain the smooth running of the school. They assist in the Library, raise the flags each day, assist during Assembly etc. We will share some photographs in the next addition of the Rust and Navy.

GIVE
GIVE

The virtue we have been working on in the Junior School is Teamwork.
Definition:
Teamwork is when a group of people link up to complete a task or achieve a common goal. Good teamwork means that the task will get done efficiently and usually requires humility, respect and flexibility. Group activities are often aided by leadership, but only when the participants respect the leader.
I am practicing teamwork when I:
· Get along with others and compromise
· Respect everyone’s opinions
· Offer support to others
· Use soft voices
· Participate actively
· Stay focused on the task
Where does Teamwork fit?
Hard Work
· Citizenship
· Leadership
· Community Spirit
· Teamwork
· Helpfulness
· Service
· Generosity
For older students:
😊What was the last team/group I was in? Thinking honestly, was I a good team player?
😊How do I determine if a group needs a leader, and who that leader should be?
😊How can I be a better team player in my classroom and at home?

Happenings in the Secondary School
Happenings in the Secondary School

It has been a great first fortnight in the Secondary School with many activities underway both inside and outside the classroom!
We were able to celebrate the Class of 2023 during a Special Assembly during the week. It was wonderful to hear from two of our students from last year's graduating class, Ella-Maree J and Chelsea O, as they reflected on their path to success during the HSC. Some practical tips they gave our Secondary girls included: be consistent with study throughout the year as the HSC is a marathon and not a sprint, complete practice questions regularly and ask your teachers for help anytime you are unsure of a new concept.
Today our Year 10-12 girls took part in a whole day seminar on Respectful Relationships, so parents it would be good if you could have a discussion with your daughter about what she learnt during today's sessions and her take away messages.
We are all looking forward to the Swimming Carnival next Tuesday 13 February at Hornsby Pool, as well as Ash Wednesday Mass next Wednesday 14 February and hope you can join us!
A reminder that tonight we also have our KPF, so we look forward to seeing you all then in Yarra Hall at 7:30pm for Mrs Sakr's address, followed by a presentation from your daughter's Homeroom teacher.

High Expectations in the Technology Faculty
High Expectations in the Technology Faculty
The Technology faculty has grown and evolved into a relevant and engaging workspace where students have maximum opportunities to research and plan, produce and implement, test and evaluate their design projects, all based on a need. We have witnessed a major shift in the way students think and engage in stem-based solutions at Tangara. 2023 was a culmination of this hard work made possible by the support of our parents, executive, teachers, TAS assistant and outstanding Tangara students.
Congratulations to the class of 2023 Food Technology students- they have showcased what our school is all about. Our HSC results were strong. Ella-Maree achieved a state ranking- third in the state, an outstanding performance. Results were strong at the band 5 and 6 levels and each girl achieved their personal best. We wish them all the best in their life journeys.
With the generosity of Tangara to support the developing needs of the faculty, we have enhanced our Technologies to meet the needs of the Technology syllabus. This has included one to one laptops/chromebooks, updated machinery extraction system, compound mitre saw, Actura robots, 3 D printing, laser cutting technologies, acrylic bender, KitchenAid mixers, sous vide machines, waffle makers, food photography cameras and photo booths, new Bosch ovens, microwaves, air threaded overlockers, computerised embroidery sewing machines, and applique and fabric dyeing and printing technologies.
The we can do it buzz and crunchy “crunchy eyebrow moments” have begun in 2024 in the Swan Technology building. We thank Mrs Engesser for her six years of service teaching Technology and for her love of our students and expertise in Technology, and we welcome Ms Malama Arapoglou to the TAS faculty teaching Years 7 & 8. Mrs Dinushi Perera continues her work as our talented TAS assistant.
Our expectations are high for each and every girl studying Technology in 2024. Parents, feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or are able to share your talents with our learners.
Best wishes for the learning year ahead and God bless.

Music Practice Seminar
Music Practice Seminar
Last Wednesday, Mrs. Roh hosted a seminar for students and parents about the benefits of establishing quality home music practice.
The central idea was that practice transcends mere habit; it is intentional, purposeful, and driven by a clear mission and objective. She emphasised the importance of setting clear weekly expectations and providing students with a visible schedule to aid in effective time management and accountability.
The seminar highlighted the significance of cultivating an environment conducive to focused practice, one that is free from distractions and respects the child's developmental needs and family routines. Furthermore, it underscored the pivotal role of parental involvement in celebrating and nurturing their child's practice efforts.
We extend our gratitude to Mrs. Roh for sharing her wonderful insights and hope that families found the information helpful.

Meet Our Head of English
Mrs Brunella Pagano
Mrs Brunella Pagano

Firstly, I would like to extend a Happy New Year to everyone. I feel very blessed and privileged to join this warm, collegial community of Tangara School for Girls as Head of English this year. In that spirit, I'd like to give you a brief overview of myself.
My name is Brunella Pagano and I have been in the teaching profession for 30 years! I have taught at both single-sexed and coeducational schools across Sydney including John Paul II Senior High School where I first met our gracious Principal, Rita Sakr! Since then, I have worked at a range of Christianprivate schools, including Terra Sancta College, The King’s School for fifteen years, William Clarke College as Assistant Head of English and more recently at Tara Anglican School where my passion for teaching girls was reinvigorated. Hence my interest in applying for the Head of English position at Tangara where I am excited to lead a team of dedicated, capable and highly motivated professionals.
I am passionate about educating and empowering girls to become articulate, confident, compassionate and resilient young women and for life beyond the classroom. I am a committed Catholic and value the comfort, compassion and courage which the Catholic charism brings to us as individuals and as a like-minded community. In my personal life, I have been married for 30 years and have a son, Nicholas, who attended King’s and is now a successful Real Estate Agent. I enjoy reading (of course!), attending theatre productions, traveling to predominantly winter destinations and love snow skiing in Australia and abroad with my family. I have two older sisters who I am incredibly close with – one a Lawyer who specialises in Family Law and the other an English and Italian teacher who happened to also teach me atschool! We are a force to be reckoned with when we go shopping as a trio!
As already stated, I am very excited to be working and contributing to the Tangara School community. I wish you all a productive and fulfilling year.
Brunella Pagano
