Welcome back
Welcome to Term 2! We have hit the ground running with our Anzac Day Ceremony, Parent Teacher Interviews, Year 7 Mother Daughter Camp, Mother’s Day Mass and High Tea and targeted teaching and learning. Like all things in life, having a reason for why we do things helps to provide meaning to what can sometimes appear to be routine. I start each term reminding our staff and students of Tangara’s mission and this helps us to keep focused on the “bigger picture”, our ultimate goal. As we embark on another term, I share with you Tangara's purpose, in hope that it may also help you maintain focus on the bigger picture and the invaluable role you play as a parent:
“Tangara works in partnership with parents to form each child’s character, educating for personal and academic excellence. We challenge our students to live a life of faith, and lead change for a more just and humane society”.
Let’s continue to work together, school and home, supporting every child in their journey toward achieving their fullest potential and becoming the best version of themselves.
Term 2 Key Parent Function - Friday 24 May 7.30pm
Whether it’s a mobile device, a laptop, ipad, gaming console etc, let’s face it, at some stage in our child’s life they will be tech users. From our experience as educators, and from what our parents share with us, we understand this has become an increasingly challenging issue. Regardless of your child’s age, please join us for the Term 2 KPF on Friday 24 May at 7.30pm in Yarra Hall to learn more about "Helping our children thrive in the digital world".
Anzac Day Ceremony
Last week we enjoyed a very poignant Anzac Day ceremony, commemorating the service of all Australian men and women who have made and continue to make, the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live in peace, freedom and democracy today. On every defence site in Australia, you will find signs and flags emblazoned with five words that draw on the ANZAC spirit: Service, Courage, Respect, Integrity and Excellence. Our guest speaker Brigadier Phillip Keith Hope Bridie, of the Australian Army reminded us of these important values and how we can strive to integrate them in our daily lives at school, at home and in our communities.
May - Month our Our Lady
Traditionally the Church dedicates the month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this time we try to keep the Mother of God more present in our hearts by doing a pilgrimage, making little sacrifices in her honour, and praying the rosary with extra attention and devotion. Our students will have the opportunity to do a Pilgrimage this month, either at school or at a marian shrine off campus. Throughout this month, we offer prayers for both our personal and collective intentions, seeking the intercession of our Lady to help us grow closer to her Son each day.
Please remember in your prayers some of our families who have recently lost loved ones:
Dr Sekhar Pillai on the passing of his father
Mrs Jenny Harb on the loss of her father
Mr Joe El Sabbagh and Mrs Jocelyne Harb on the loss of their father
May we pray for the repose of their souls, and may they rest in peace.
Happy Mother’s Day
It was so lovely having so many of our Tangara mums join us for a very special Mother’s Day Mass and High Tea today, hosted by our Tangara Dads and Junior and Secondary Leadership teams. Our girls are grateful for the unconditional love, guidance and the many sacrifices you make for them. Happy Mother’s Day to all our Tangara mums for this Sunday!

From the Chaplain
Today we celebrate Mother's Day. And it is all natural that we turn our eyes to Mary, the mother of Jesus and our mother. May is a month to let ourselves be looked upon by Mary. She helps us to discover that in life not everything is about profit, effectiveness and performance, as Pope Francis explains:
"A world that looks to the future without a mother’s gaze is shortsighted. It may well increase its profits, but it will no longer see others as children. It will make money, but not for everyone. We will all dwell in the same house, but not as brothers and sisters. The human family is built upon mothers. A world in which maternal tenderness is dismissed as mere sentiment may be rich materially, but poor where the future is concerned. Mother of God, teach us to see life as you do. Turn your gaze upon us, upon our misery, our poverty.Turn to us thine eyes of mercy."
The gaze of Mary helps us to understand that we are daughters and sons of God: we have received everything we are from God and we don't really have anything to give back to God, as a toddler cannot give back to his parents. With Mary we learn that the Lord only expects gratitude from our heart and that we give to Him our sins and flaws.

ANZAC Day
We commenced Term 2 with our ANZAC Day ceremony. Throughout the day the children learnt about the meaning of ANZAC Day and why we keep this day special in Australia. The children showed great respect throughout our ceremony which our High School students led. In class, our Infants children made poppies to remember all Australians and New Zealanders who gave their lives in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions around the world. We also remembered all those who have served and continue to serve in the Australian and New Zealand services.
Mother's Day
Mother’s Day is a special day for children to celebrate their mothers and all that they do. Today’s celebration for our Tangara mums was a chance for the children to take some precious time and really think about how special you all are. The children were excited to show their mums their beautiful work and to spend time together in the classroom.
Playground Rules
To keep ourselves safe and happy at school we have new playground signs in both the rear and front play areas. At assembly and in class we have spoken about the importance of rules and how they help us to be mindful of others to ensure we can enjoy our beautiful playground.
Super Library Book Borrowers
To encourage students to borrow and read from the library, our lovely librarians are awarding our Super Library Borrowers each term with a certificate.
Brain Gym
Brain Gym is a programme of body movements designed to help engage the brain and improve learning.
In class we are learning seven brain gym exercises:
- Thinking Cap helps in improving the child's hearing, peripheral vision, and short-term memory.
- Brain Buttons are to stimulate blood flow to the brain and helps the child to concentrate and focus.
- The Cross Crawl helps burn excess energy, making it easier for students to concentrate. Cross Crawls assists with balance and crossing the midline. This movement engages both halves of the brain and forces them to work together.
- Figure Eights loosens the muscles in arms and wrists and activates the creative side. It also improves eyesight with eye muscle coordination and peripheral vision.
- Ladders help us to stretch and engage both halves of the brain and forces them to work together.
- Hook Ups is a calming exercise that helps students focus. This helps the mind and body relax and reduce stress.
- Fingertip push-ups help us to focus and breathe correctly.

Parent Teacher Interviews
It was wonderful to connect with so many of our parents this week at the Parent Teacher interviews for Yr2 – 6. I hope you valued the opportunity to spend some time with your child’s teacher and goal set together for the term ahead.
May Pilgrimages
You would have received information about your child’s Rosary Pilgrimage during May. This is a highlight of the calendar and a chance to pray together as a class for all the intensions of our families and friends.
Excursions
We have some fabulous excursions planned this term for Y2, 3 and 4 this term. Taking learning outside of the classroom is so beneficial. Please mark these dates on your calendar.
S.A.L.T Team
STOP PRESS! The SALT Team are well and truly up and running. They have been busy attending meeting, planning, writing questions, arranging and conducting interviews. I was very pleased to be interviewed by two lovely interviewers and two photojournalists last week! We are all enjoying the process. A huge thank you to Mrs Hirsch who is coordinating this worthwhile learning experience.
Chess Club
Our Chess Club began last week under the direction and guidance of Mrs Elliott. Some Year 3 and Year 6 girls have signed up for the opportunity to learn and improve their chess game. Chess benefits children in developing so many skills such as: planning, organisation and problem solving skills and also improves memory and concentration.
Giving Girls
The Giving Girls Club began again this term. Our purpose is to come together once a week and plan some meaningful projects to assist our school and the wider community. It is lovely to see the generosity of the girls who are giving up their lunch time.
Lunchtime Rosary Club
Mrs Kwak has begun a lunchtime Rosary Club open to all Primary Students. This group will meet each Wednesday at lunchtime in the chapel and say the Rosary together. What a beautiful way to come together as a school community and pray for each other.

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue we are learning about in the Junior School is Kindness.
Definition:
Kindness means treating other people nicely, thinking about what is good for them and respecting their thoughts, ideas and wishes. It might mean sharing with them, speaking nicely, being friendly or including them in your friendship groups or games. Think about how you would like to be treated, then treat others that way.
I am practicing kindness when I:
• Give attention to someone who is sad or needs help
• Do things that give others happiness
• Accept people who are different
• Take good care of animals
• Resist the temptation to be cruel.
Synonyms:
Where does Kindness fit?
Love
· Forgiveness
· Compassion
· Empathy
· Charity
· Respect
· Friendliness
· Courtesy
· Kindness
· Patience
· Helpfulness
For older students:
😊What is something kind I have experienced this week?
😊What is my reaction if someone is unkind or harsh to me?
😊What is an act of kindness I could do today?

Welcome back to Term 2
Welcome back to Term 2

A very warm welcome back to our Tangara Secondary students who were a buzz last Tuesday, as we returned for yet another busy term. It was lovely to see the girls wearing their winter uniforms with pride and we encourage the girls to continue doing so.
Even though we have only had just under two weeks at school, we have had many events and activities to celebrate.
We started the term with a beautiful ANZAC Ceremony, where we were fortunate enough to have Brigadier Phillip KH Bridie address us on this day. He reinforced the importance of the ANZAC spirit, mateship and shared his life experiences.
Congratulations to our Primary B ISDA Debating Team of Charlotte W, Elisabeth P, Rebecca T, Theresa S, Anisha P and Serena S, who have qualified for the Octos Rounds. We wish these girls all the best for the finals against Barker next Friday.
Good Luck to our Tangara Mock Trial Team who are preparing for their second round against SHORE next fortnight.
Archdale Debating is also to begin next fortnight and the girls have been busy preparing by taking part in Debating workshops in the lead up to this competition. Good Luck for Round 1 against Monte!
We wish all of our mothers a very Happy Mother's Day for Sunday and it was wonderful that so many of our mothers were able to join us for our Mothers Day Mass and High Tea today!

Year 10 Commerce - Law, Society and Political Involvement
Year 10 Commerce - Law, Society and Political Involvement
Written by Liana Perisa and Claire Cabela
In Year 10 Commerce, we have been studying Law, Society and Political Involvement. It has been an interesting course so far given it applies to all facets of our lives and it makes you realize how laws are created, amended and how everyday actions, processes come under various law jurisdictions. Given our exposure to the court system, we can appreciate the work that goes into selecting an appropriate jury, how the law and its representatives strive to protect our community and the dedication of our politicians when committed to introducing and following through with the passing of new laws.
Our assessment task required us to take a stand in groups on an issue or law that we felt required altering. Girls picked various issues and laws to take a stance ranging from raising the criminal age of responsibility all the way to lowering the voting age. The task consisted of visual components (campaign poster, word art) and writing including a speech to the class and a persuasive letter to our local Government outlining why these laws necessitated alteration. "This experience has granted us invaluable insight into the inner workings of our legal system, providing a unique opportunity to engage with the political fabric of society firsthand. Delving into the particulars of our legal system has empowered us to recognize our individual agency and the profound impact we can have in effecting positive change. This journey has aided in fostering personal and intellectual growth as we gained a deeper understanding of the intricacies of our legal system and our pivotal role in shaping it for the better. "Overall, it was an interesting and enjoyable experience which taught us the art of taking a stance on an issue we believed in and working together as a team towards a common goal.
Here are some samples of our posters.

Captains' Corner
My name is Catherine Lee and I am privileged to be your La Mancha House Captain for 2024. This role particularly inspires me through its capability to motivate unity, creativity and build team morale. Sports and teamwork has been an integral part of my life and continues to do so today whether it be cross country, netball, swimming, dance and tennis. It has also taught me that the benefit of playing sport goes beyond the scope of just the physical benefits. Before an exam, running has always helped me to stimulate my brain and supports me to perform better. This year, I hope that the girls can see sport as an opportunity for continued growth in mental strength through endurance and building team and cooperation. Together, we look forward to making 2024 a year full of new events and relationships that will make La Mancha capable to “Run where the brave dare not go” - Man of La Mancha.
