Welcome back to Term 3!
Welcome back to the second semester. Our students and staff have returned looking well rested and ready to embrace the many teaching and learning opportunities on offer this term.
Today, we had our beautiful First Friday Vigil, providing a meaningful opportunity to pray for the intentions of our families, especially those who are currently ill. We also continue to pray for peace in our world, particularly in the Middle East, Russia, and Ukraine. Additionally, we pray for our world leaders, that they may lead with wisdom and truth.
It was unfortunate that the much anticipated Olympics were marred by offensive scenes during the opening ceremony. These so-called inclusive ideologies claim to uphold respect, dignity, and inclusion for all people, but the reality is that this event lacked genuine respect and understanding. While our voices for the truth need to be heard, let us always remember to follow the example of Jesus Christ, doing so with love, respect, and always with peace.
Challenging Unrealistic Beauty Standards
While beauty and body image ideals have diversified over the years, there are now more and more expectations about how a woman "should" look. We all know too well that these supposedly ideal standards are impossible to achieve. According to Dove's 2024 global report on women and beauty, nearly 50% of young girls believe there is no excuse "not to be beautiful." The impact of these idealised physical traits flooding digital media is severe. Girls and young women report they would sacrifice good grades or even their dream careers to achieve this unattainable beauty standard (Dove, 2024, p.17).
These messages affect us all, so how can we challenge these values? We need to help improve girls' body esteem, as they are the most impacted by unrealistic beauty expectations. Please join us on Friday 9 August, at 7:30pm in Yarra Hall for our Term 3 Key Parent Function. Meg McClintock, an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Eating Disorder Clinician, will address parents and staff on this critical topic: "From Pressure to Power: Nurturing Positive Body Image in our Children."
We believe this presentation will be highly beneficial, providing essential tools to support the development of a positive self-image in our children. Your attendance and participation are vital to our ongoing partnership in supporting you in your most important role: parenting.
Athletics Carnival
A bitterly cold winter's day couldn't dampen our students' robust school spirit at our annual athletics carnival. The atmosphere was just as spirited on the track as it was in the stands, with our houses - Siena, Atlantis, La Mancha, and Tintagel cheering enthusiastically for their teammates.
Thank you to Mrs. Benson for organising a seamless carnival, our volunteers for running the much appreciated canteen, and the parents who were able to join us. We look forward to announcing the winning house and our age champions at our School Assemblies and in the next edition of the Rust and Navy.
Trial HSC Examinations - Goodluck Year 12
Please keep our Year 12 students in your prayers as they commence their Trial HSC Examinations next Monday 5 August and continue until Friday 16 August. Thank you to our staff who are committed to preparing our students, many of them running HSC workshops and marking practice papers during their break. Thank you also to their parents who continue to support them during this important time in their final year of schooling. It’s a time of mixed emotions as they draw near to the end of one chapter of their life and embark on another new and exciting time where they will have the opportunity to put into practice all they have learnt over the past 13 years.
Save the Dates - Presentation Day 2024

Next 15th of August we will celebrate the Assumption of our Lady. Along with her coronation as Queen of heavens (22nd August), this feast ends the cycle of Marian mysteries we celebrate throughout the year. In those two feasts, the lyrics of the song that Mary composed (called the Magnificat) become true:
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
Mary becomes a celebrity and her song has been sung in the catholic Church for centuries all over the world. Just one single song but probably the most played song ever if Spotify would have existed since the birth of Jesus.
And how does Mary become a celebrity? Pope Francis explains it to us:
"The Virgin, then, prophesies with this canticle, with this prayer: she prophesies that it will not be power, success and money to prevail, but rather that service, humility and love will prevail. And as we look at her, in glory, we understand that true power is service — let us not forget this: true power is service — and to reign means to love. And that this is the road to Heaven."
True power is service, humility and love. And following her example he can also become unknown celebrities, that is, saints. A saint is someone who allows Jesus to take over its heart and transform it according to Jesus' heart. A saint is someone who has his heart in heaven and his feet on earth. And I in him, these words of Saint Josemaria are fulfilled: “Heaven and earth seem to merge, my sons and daughters, on the horizon. But where they really meet is in your hearts, when you sanctify your everyday lives.

Term 3 has begun with great enthusiasm in Infants. Our youngest learners were excited to dive into new activities and lessons as they continue to build upon foundational concepts and skills. Term 3 is traditionally a busy term for learning and events, and this year is no different as we celebrate 100 days of school, Book Week, Science Week and Grandparents Day.
Parent volunteers recently installed a new sandpit, transforming the playground into an exciting new space for students. The sandpit has quickly become a favourite spot for children during playtime as they enjoy building sandcastles, digging tunnels, and creating imaginative worlds together. The joy and laughter echoing from the sandpit are a testament to the positive impact of our parents' effort and generosity. Thank you!
100 Days of School
Today we celebrated 100 days of school with everyone dressing up as 100-year-olds. Tiny spectacles, canes, and grey wigs were in abundance, making the children look adorable as they embraced their elderly personas. The day was filled with fun learning activities designed to mark this special milestone, from counting to 100, making fairy bread and creating special crafts to sharing stories about what they’ve learned so far.

Welcome Back
I am pleased to report that the term has started very well. The energy and excitement in our classrooms are palpable, and we look forward to a productive and enriching term ahead.
Extra Curricular Achievements
It was fabulous to hear about some of the achievements of our students during the holidays.
We were thrilled to receive the news that our very own Charlotte WP was awarded Runner Up in the Year 5 2024 Harmony Day Competition. This is a huge achievement as the competition is run nationally. We are so very proud of Charlotte.
Natalie J in Yr 3 won the Silver Award in the 2024 Ryde Eisteddfod in the 8-10 years Musical Theatre vocal solo session, competing among older and more experienced singers. A fabulous achievement.
Theresa S in Yr 5 received the Highly Commended Award in the event 230 (19th Century Piano - 11 & 12 years) at the Sydney Eisteddfod, the most prestigious piano competition in Sydney. Congratulations Theresa.
Congratulations to Olesya and Serena. After several auditions and callbacks, they landed parts in The Lion King Jr. run by Paragon Entertainment and the Australian Performing Arts College (APAC). They worked extremely hard with months of rehearsals and were rewarded with spectacular performances of the production at The Pioneer Theatre, Castle Hill.
Athletics Carnival
Our Athletics Carnival was a wonderful success, filled with excitement, teamwork and school spirit. Not even the arctic conditions could dampen our enthusiasm. Special thanks to our parent volunteers who kept our little athletes fueled for the day!
Healthy Lunch Box Reminder
We have noticed a rise in surgery snacks coming to school in the children’s lunch boxes. Can I please ask that you consider some healthy alternatives? Providing children with healthy morning tea and lunches is essential for their overall wellbeing and sets them up for a full day of learning.
Snack Packs
The GIVING girls are asking for donations to the Vinnies Snack Pack Program. Each child in Primary has been asked to donate a small lunch box item that can be added to the Lunch Box Packs. I have included a photograph for your reference. Many thanks for your generosity in supporting this initiative. It is so important for our students to understand that many children do not have the things we take for granted.

Year 4 is hard at work!
Year 4 Navy have been diligently working on their STEM projects in Term 2. They successfully created a game controller and an interactive poster showing their creativity and critical thinking skills. They have been learning how to troubleshoot errors and problem solve in order to make their projects work.
In English this term, we have begun exploring narratives and focusing on crafting attention- grabbing introductions.
Year 4 is looking forward to learning more about the world around us this term!

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue you are focussing on in the Junior School is Patience
Definition:
Patience is being able to cope with annoying and difficult situations without becoming angry or aggressive. Patience uses logic and self control to behave in a way that wont hurt other people. When we are patient we are considerate and kind to those who work slower than us, we can wait our turn and control our actions and reactions.
I am practicing patience when I:
· Calmly tolerate a delay or confusion
· Am willing to wait for things I want
· Set goals and stick with them until they are completed
· Am gentle with others when they make mistakes
Where does Patience fit?
Love
· Forgiveness
· Compassion
· Empathy
· Charity
· Respect
· Friendliness
· Courtesy
· Kindness
· Patience
· Helpfulness
😊Would people who know me say that I’m a patient person?
😊How do I react if a situation is disorganised or a task is taking longer than planned?
😊 What things could I achieve if I exercised more patience.

Welcome back to Term 3
Welcome back to Term 3

Term 3 is off to a flying start and it was great to see the girls in such good spirits, as they returned to school last Wednesday. The hallways were full of chatter before the bell rang, as the girls checked in with each other and shared stories from their holidays. Even though we have only been back at school for just under a fortnight, we have had a number of events and activities to celebrate.
We started the term with a Secondary Assembly and Grade Meetings, which allowed us to check-in with the girls and let them know of the happenings for the term ahead. The girls appeared refreshed and ready to embrace the abundant learning and growth opportunities awaiting them.
Our annual Athletics Carnival was a great way to start the term, with fantastic participation rates and impressive House Spirit on display throughout the whole day. Well done to all girls and staff who made this day such a success!

Year 12 Geography Urban Dynamics Fieldwork Study Excursion

Year 12 Geography fieldwork study excursion to Barangaroo and Pyrmont was an enriching experience that combined hands-on learning with real-world urban dynamics. The excursion was meticulously planned to help our students understand the complexities of urban renewal, urban consolidation, and the socio-economic impacts of these processes.

Year 9 Music Class
Year 9 Music Class
This term, our Year 9 Music students are diving into the exploration of Baroque and Classical music, studying key composers like Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They are engaging in hands-on composition tasks, critical listening exercises, and analysis of key works to enhance their understanding and skills in music composition.

Primary Class Music - Year 3
Primary Class Music - Year 3
The Year 3 girls began the term learning about the use of drone in music. We listened to different examples of drone, such as didgeridoo (yidaki), Scottish bagpipes, a Tibetan singing bowl and a singing wine glass.
The students had great fun creating their own drone compositions, using vocals (humming) and an inflated balloon. We explored the use of drone in Asian music and created their own drone patterns using a minor pentatonic scale on the glockenspiel.
