Welcome to Term 4, 2024! I hope you and your families had a restful and enjoyable break. We are excited to embark on another term filled with opportunities for exciting, creative, and meaningful learning. As we approach the final stretch of the school year, we encourage our students to maintain their diligence and perseverance. Let’s also take a moment to focus on the virtue of gratitude for the many opportunities we have embraced so far.
Today, we had the pleasure of celebrating World Teachers’ Day, a special occasion to express our gratitude to our talented, dedicated, and inspirational teachers. Their commitment to educating both the minds and hearts of our students is truly admirable. A heartfelt thank you to all our teachers and staff, who come to work each day not just to fulfil a profession, but to live out their vocation.
Last week was a time of new beginnings for our Year 12 2025 girls, who not only started their Year 12 studies, but also embarked on their new roles as student leaders of the School. Beginning their journey together at the Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to work and learn together, and I am sure that each girl will be a great role model and that all of Year 12 will collectively lead Tangara exceptionally well.
During the holidays, Tangara was recognised in the Daily Telegraph for its progressive decision, made over eight years ago, to remove mobile phones during the school day. This move was highlighted at a joint summit between the NSW and SA governments, which explored the impacts of social media on young people’s wellbeing. By prioritising digital wellbeing, Tangara has seen positive academic and emotional outcomes in its students. The policy not only fosters greater engagement and confidence during the school day but also reduces the incidence of bullying linked to social media.
However, achieving these outcomes is a joint effort, and the partnership between home and school is key. Parents play a crucial role in reinforcing these values and supporting their daughters' digital wellbeing outside of school. Together, we can continue to help our girls thrive academically, emotionally, and socially in a safe and supportive environment.
During the recent school holidays, Tangara students demonstrated their commitment to both service and learning through two remarkable overseas experiences. Fourteen Year 11 students travelled to Cebu, Philippines, to participate in a community service project in collaboration with the Banilad Centre for Professional Development. They worked alongside local students, teaching English, First Aid, and cooking skills, while also helping to refurbish and paint facilities at the centre and supporting the construction of two new classrooms at Cadulawan School. Their efforts will have a lasting impact on the students and families in these communities. A special thanks to the staff who accompanied them, making this valuable service opportunity possible.
Meanwhile, another group of Tangara students embarked on an educational study tour to Italy and France. Focused on French, Art, and History, this tour allowed students to deepen their understanding of language and culture, explore historical sites, and immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Europe. Highlights included language immersion on the Côte d’Azur, visiting Paris, walking in the footsteps of ANZAC troops at the WWI Somme battlefields, and discovering the Roman legacy in Italy. Their visit to Rome was a particular highlight, including a tour of Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Despite numerous efforts to arrange a papal audience, it was not possible this time.
These two experiences - one grounded in service and the other in learning - are wonderful examples of how Tangara students embrace opportunities to grow both personally and academically, making an impact both locally and globally. Thank you again to the staff who guided and supported the students on these transformative journeys!
We continue to keep the Class of 2024 in our prayers as they continue with their HSC exams. Please also keep in your prayers many members of our school community who are unwell, including Mrs Mia Dineen (Staff Member), Mrs Donna Fernandez (Parent).
I look forward to seeing you at various events this term, including our Thanksgiving Mass for parents of Tangara and Redfield alumni, the highly anticipated Twilight Markets, the Infants Christmas Concert, and our Presentation Evening celebrations. You can find specific details about these events in other sections of the Rust and Navy or in correspondence that will be sent shortly.

Next Friday, November 1st, we will celebrate All saints day. It is a feast of hope and joy that puts before our eyes our call to holiness. As Pope Benedict XVI taught:
"Behold the meaning of today's solemnity: Gazing upon the luminous example of the saints the great desire to be like the saints is awakened in us; happy to live near to God, in his light, in the great family of the friends of God. Being a saint means living close to God, living in his family. And this is the vocation of all of us, vigorously reaffirmed by the Second Vatican Council, and on this day brought to our attention in a solemn way."
It is a day of hope in which we are inspired by the millions of anonymous saints who have left on this earth a furrow of hope in the action of God in their lives. Yes, God is at work in our hearts and through us, he continues his work of making people happy here on earth. And how can I become a saint? Benedict answers:
"But how can we become saints, friends of God? An initial response to this question is this: To be saints it is not necessary to perform extraordinary deeds and works, nor is it necessary to possess exceptional charisms. But this only tells us what sainthood is not. The positive answer is that to become a saint it is above all necessary to listen to Jesus and then to follow him and not lose heart in the face of difficulties."
Listen to Jesus. It is a good opportunity to think if we have time in our day to listen to Him in prayer. We can even think of being helped in building that conversation with him daily. There are plenty of resources that can guide us in our quest for the face of Jesus in personal prayer. Maybe you can try these links:

Term 4 has started well, with children working hard across all subjects, particularly English and Math. Mornings before school have been filled with joy as the children enjoy the early morning sun, spotting ladybirds, creating daisy chains, and playing hopscotch. There’s also a sense of excitement in the air as we look forward to the wonderful upcoming events in Infants, including the All Saints Day Parade, Year 1 Zoo Excursion, “Christmas Around the World,” and our Annual Infants Christmas Concert.
ONE MILLION Rosaries for Peace
Kindergarten and Year 1 students recently participated in ‘One Million Rosaries for Peace’, joining millions worldwide in praying for peace in our world. As part of this special day, the children visited Our Lady’s Garden and the chapel, where they gathered to reflect and pray together. This meaningful experience helped them understand the power of prayer and the importance of seeking peace for everyone around the world.
Reading
Reading is a fundamental skill that opens the door to lifelong learning. In Kindergarten and Year 1, we emphasise the importance of developing reading skills and comprehension, as these early years are critical for building a strong foundation. By focusing on reading, we help children expand their vocabulary, improve their understanding of language, and foster a love for books. Our goal is to nurture confident readers who can not only decode words but also understand and enjoy the stories they read, setting them on a path for academic success and a lifelong passion for learning.
It is important that children read out loud with an adult for 15-20 minutes daily. The focus of this reading session is for children to read a passage with fluency and not be dependent on sounding out every word.
Christmas Concert
All Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students are required to wear a plain white short sleeved T-shirt for our annual Christmas Concert.
Road Safety
Please note the new Infants Carline signage. For the safety of our students, overtaking is strictly prohibited in the Carline area.

Million Children Praying the Rosary
We have recently joined the Million Children Praying the Rosary initiative for world peace. This was a powerful reminder to the students that their prayers matter and how coming together in prayer is a beautiful way to unite as a community, offering hope and strength for a world in need of peace. It emphasised the importance of faith and solidarity, showing the students that even small acts of prayer can contribute to a greater good.
GIVE Lessons
Our GIVE Character Education Program began with a focus on the virtue of determination. We discovered that determination means persevering and not giving up, even when things get tough. Year Three demonstrated this by tackling some challenging matchstick puzzles. Enjoy the photographs and see their determination in action!
Sun Safety
As the weather warms up, a reminder about the importance of students wearing hats at morning tea and lunch. Please ensure that your child brings their school hat each day.
Suggestion Box
We have recently introduced a Suggestion and Feedback Box for our primary students. This initiative encourages our students to actively share their ideas, thoughts and suggestions. We look forward to receiving lots of ideas!
Australian Mathematics Competition
The Australian Mathematics Competition is Australia’s longest running, largest and most well known mathematics competition for school students. Congratuatlions to the nine primary students who took part in the AMC last term. Each of these girls achieved an award which was a huge achievement.
Public Speaking
During our Friday assemblies the Yr 6 class leaders take turns to deliver a short speech on a topical issue. Last week, Sienna N wrote and delivered these thoughtful words on the Rosary:
"This month is dedicated to the Rosary, a powerful prayer that invites us to reflect, ask for guidance, and pray for the world. Now, you might wonder, “How can praying a simple prayer like the Rosary help bring peace?” It’s a good question, peace isn’t just about ending wars or stopping conflicts, though those are important. True peace begins in our hearts, and spreads through our actions. When we pray the Rosary, we ask for inner peace and strength to do good in the world.
Praying the Rosary for world peace reminds us that, even though we are young, we can make a difference. Every prayer we say is a step towards helping the world become a better place. We may not be able to end conflicts on our own, but by praying, we are asking for God’s help and offering our love and hope for peace."
On the topic of Public Speaking, congratulations to Lucille F from Yr 5 who participated in the Rising Voices Public Speaking Championship on the weekend. Lucille delivered a prepared speech on the topic of "Embracing Change" and an impromptu speech on "Following the Leader." We are thrilled to announce that Lucille won first place in her division. Well done Lucille.
Thank you
I am deeply grateful for the messages, prayers, and kind wishes for my upcoming surgery. Your prayers mean a lot to me and I truly feel very supported by them.

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue we have been working on in the Junior School is Determination.
Determination is the strength to see something through till the end with our giving up or losing heart. Having determination does not mean you never feel discouraged, have moments of doubt or fear, or face adversity. It means pressing on despite these obstacles.
I am practicing determination when I:
· Believe what I am doing is important
· Set goals for myself
· Focus my full attention on what I am doing
· Resist distractions
· Keep going even if it gets difficult
· Ask for help when I need it
· Finish what I start
Where does Determination fit?
Self Mastery
· Self discipline
· Focus
· Persistence
· Orderliness
· Determination
· Perseverance
· Stickability
For older students:
😊Do I push through to finish a task or get frustrated and give up when things don’t go my way?
😊When was the last time I displayed determination? How did it make me feel?
😊 Is there anything that I regret quitting? Can I take it up again and finish it?
Year 2
Year 2
Year 2 have been delving into the world of books and immersing themselves in the language of Julia Donaldson. They have been exploring the use of word types and phrases such as adverbs, verbs, adjective phrases, similes and personification to create an engaging text. They have enjoyed picking apart the language of famous authors and have used their knowledge to write amazing stories of their own. They have published their stories, complete with pictures, and will be reading them to other classes for all to enjoy and celebrate their achievements.
In Mathematics, Year 2 have been using their knowledge of data handling and informal measures to measure mass. They have been conducting hands-on investigations using balance arm scales to measure various everyday objects and have had lots of fun trying to make accurate estimates.
Last term saw Year 2 students present some wonderful presentations all about their family’s country of origin. They spoke beautifully and shared some wonderful insights into tradition and culture. They even got to sample some very tasty traditional food. A wonderful interesting learning experiences for all of Year 2.

Yr 9 REAL: From 2D to 3D Friendships - Navigating Friendships in a digital world
Yr 9 REAL: From 2D to 3D Friendships - Navigating Friendships in a digital world
Year 9 had a REAL workshop with Miss Alvir and Natalia Nader (Class of 2021).
Natalia talked about how to navigate friendships in a digital world. She spoke about her personal experience and also gave us some tips on how to grow deeper friendships offline. She spoke about the limitations of snapchat and other social media platforms as a way to communicate with our friends on a deeper level.
Miss Alvir spoke about the 2D culture we live in and the pressures that it puts on us to focus on our digital image rather than growing deeper friendships and genuine connections. She gave us reasons why it's worth going beyond a 2D friendship to a 3D friendship.
Year 9 Girls speak up!
"Instead of having 100 'friends' on snap/followers, make an effort and deepen your friendship with those close friends, because they are the one's that last, and those are the people who will positively impact your life and fill it with love and long lasting memories."
"The workshop we did on friendship really dived into the true meaning of friendship and how it should be built on. We also got to learn more about our close friends and I definitely learnt some new facts about my friends that I didn't know before."
"This talk will help me to build more friendships and connect deeper into the friendships that I already have."
"It was an overall meaningful experience, that has helped me to realize that staying with people with good personalities over toxic mentalities can change you as a person."
What is one important thing you took away from this workshop?
Social media shouldn't be the only thing keeping relationships together.
Don't let Social Media impact how you interact with friends in reality.
That social media actually lessens your capacity to be social in in-person conversations.
Real friendships come from mutual trust and communication (not from snap streaks)
To make an effort, and physically be there for your friends to build a deep and strong friendship that will last.
That friendship relies on trust.
I learnt that it is very important to sustain our relationships while it lasts, and especially when you are able to treasure it face to face.
Social Media can effect reality friendships or interactions with friends.
You should have deep connections with your friends beyond social media and meet up with them face to face getting to know each other further not just what's on the outside.
Your social battery can be drained by your phone.
Don't spend so much time on social media, try to make real friendships offline.
How to identify unhealthy friendships.
That you shouldn't base friendships on online platforms.
Don't be so invested in streaks but in proper friendships that are meaningful.
After the workshop- what's one goal you plan to put into action?
Go out more often with my friends- face to face.
At group gatherings not using phone.
Take a break from Instagram, spend more time on my friendships in real life.
Try to limit my use of social media
Trying to spend more time with the people I care about, and the people who also care about me, rather than just sitting in a massive group where I just sit and just listen and watch everyone else.
To work on building more friendships
Ignore social media a little more
Limit my screen time on social media and snap chat so I don't have less social energy and can pay attention and spend more time with my family and friends.
Spend less time on social media.
Not to go on my phone in the morning.
Try and strengthen the meaningful friendships that I presently have.
Reduce the amount of time spent online.
Spend less time on my phone when I'm with friends.
To be open with my friends
Delete snap chat.
