A New Saint for Our Time - Carlo Acutis and the Call to Live with Purpose
This past Sunday, the Church celebrated the canonisation of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati - two young men whose lives continue to offer relevant examples for today’s generation. Carlo, in particular, stands out as someone who used his everyday interests - technology, sport, and study to serve a greater purpose. At just 15, he created a website documenting Eucharistic miracles, demonstrating that faith and initiative can go hand in hand.
His well-known quote, “All people are born originals, but many die as photocopies,” speaks to the importance of living with authenticity and purpose - values we aim to instill at Tangara. This aligns closely with our mission to form young women of character, faith, and service who will go out to make a difference in the world.
Congratulations to our 2026 Student Leadership Team
It’s in this context that we announce the appointment of Tangara’s 2026 Student Leadership Team. These students have been selected for their capacity to lead with integrity and contribute positively to school life. Their leadership will play an important role in shaping the tone and culture of the year ahead.
2026 Student Leadership Team:
School Captain - Liana Perisa
School Vice Captain - Syona Nishant
Faith and Service Captain - Claire Cabela
Sport Captain - Jaime Saliba
Public Speaking Captain - Grace Ferris
Creative and Performing Art Captain - Isabelle Sarkis
House Captains:

Atlantis - Marina Diab
La Mancha - Katelyn Georges
Tintagel - Joelle Nassif
House Vice Captains:

We extend our congratulations to each student on their appointment and look forward to seeing them embrace their new leadership roles with confidence and dedication in Term 4. The upcoming Leadership Induction Ceremony on Tuesday 23 September will provide a meaningful opportunity to formally welcome our 2026 leadership team, while also acknowledging and thanking our 2025 Captains for their outstanding service and contribution throughout the year.
Tangara-Montgrove Cup: A Celebration of Sport and Spirit
A couple of weeks ago, Tangara had the pleasure of hosting our sister school, Montgrove College, for the fourth annual Tangara-Montgrove Cup. The day featured four competitive matches across Senior and Junior Basketball, Open Futsal, Open Netball. The energy and enthusiasm from both schools were unwavering. Montgrove claimed victory in Senior and Junior Basketball, while Tangara secured wins in the remaining events earning us the Cup for 2025. It was a fantastic display of teamwork, sportsmanship, and the enduring PARED spirit that connects our schools.
Inspired by our Students
One of the great privileges of my role as Principal is the opportunity to connect with our students - from our curious Preps to our thoughtful Year 12s. This week, I was reminded once again of how inspiring they are. Whether I was visiting classrooms, chatting with students at recess and lunch, or simply crossing paths as they made their way to the Chapel or their next lesson, I was struck by their openness, kindness, and quiet wisdom. These everyday interactions are a highlight of my role and a powerful reminder of the hope our young people bring, not just to our school, but to the world.
We keep our Year 12 students especially in our prayers as they near the end of 13 years of formal education and prepare for their HSC exams next term. We commenced the term applying our best efforts, and now is the time to finish well - by showing up on time, giving our best in class, being a good friend, and taking responsibility for the small things that shape character. As Dr Judith Locke reminds us, love comes with demands. True love means helping our children grow in independence and resilience. Let’s continue to love them well by encouraging them to take ownership of what they can and to rise to the challenges that help them flourish.

For parents, love is often expressed not in great gestures but in hidden sacrifices. Waking up at night to comfort a restless child, listening with patience when a teenager struggles, or choosing to spend time together rather than going to your phone or device - these are the small crosses that, when borne with love, become life-giving. They build up the home as a place where each person is safe, welcomed, and cherished.
Sacrificial love does not destroy joy; it creates it. Think of the smile that follows a parent’s quiet act of forgiveness after a harsh word, or the peace that fills the house when spouses choose reconciliation over resentment. Such choices mirror the Cross: they cost something, yet they bring forth new life.
Two simple examples can help. First, at the family table: sharing a meal, even when tired, is a way of giving time and attention that nourishes more than the body. Second, in moments of tension: when tempers rise, choosing silence or a gentle word can be a hidden act of sacrifice that protects communion. These little things weave together the great fabric of love.
The Cross reminds us that love does not calculate but gives. In family life, every diaper changed, every story read, every prayer whispered together before sleep becomes a seed of resurrection. By carrying one another’s burdens, parents become living signs of that divine love which, in Christ, conquered death and opened the way to life.
Thus, the Cross is not a symbol of sorrow alone - it is the daily pattern of Christian love, from which true family joy is born."

We’ve been enjoying some beautiful moments of sunshine and warmer weather lately, a welcome change that has brought a renewed sense of energy to our school days! With more time spent outdoors, it’s a timely reminder for students to wear their play hats and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
Of course, the weather remains unpredictable at this time of year, as we were reminded later during the week. Please continue to ensure your child brings a jumper, blazer, and raincoat to school each day so they’re prepared for all conditions.
It’s been a calm and focused fortnight in Infants, with rich learning taking place across all classrooms. The children have been engaged and settled.
Our Kindergarten Mass on Wednesday was a special occasion. We were so grateful to share this moment with our families. The prayerfulness and joy shown by our students made it a memorable and heartwarming experience. Despite the wet weather, the morning tea was filled with smiles and laughter as we gathered under the COLA, sitting on blanket rugs and enjoying each other’s company. As they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words!"

Drama Group
Our talented Year 12 student, Heidi J, has been leading the Year 5 Drama Club with passion and creativity this year. Not only did Heidi write a script, but she also dedicated her time to mentoring the students, sharing theatrical tips, techniques and plenty of encouragement along the way. The group delivered a fantastic performance during Friday’s assembly, showcasing their hard work and enthusiasm. A heartfelt thank you to Heidi for embracing her role as Performing Arts Captain with such dedication and flair.
Sr Mariam
Please enjoy the information and photographs of Sr Mariam’s visit further in Rust & Navy. It was such a pleasure to welcome a past student who shared her journey into the religious life so beautifully.
Social Action Expo
A group of Year 4 and 5 students attended the Social Action Expo at St Ignatius' College Riverview last week, joining peers from 20 independent schools. They heard inspiring talks about how best to fundraise and initiatives that promote kindness. In the afternoon, the hall came alive as schools set up stalls to showcase their social action projects. The Year 5 Giving Girls returned full of ideas and are excited to launch new initiatives within the Tangara community.
St Carlo Acutis
We happily welcomed our two new saints, St Carlo Acutis and St Pier Giorgio Frassati this week. During Religion lessons, students have been exploring the inspiring legacy of St Carlo, whose life resonates with young people. One powerful quote that Year 6 girls reflected on was, “All people are born as originals, but many die as photocopies.” This quote sparked meaningful conversations and some great reflections.
IPSHA Debating
This week, our Year 4 Debating team travelled to St Ignatius' College Riverview for the IPSHA Gala Debating Day. The students participated in a series of debates alongside teams from other schools. Our team embraced this opportunity and represented Tangara beautifully! A special thank you to Mrs McFarlane for her dedication in preparing the girls and nurturing their debating abilities, Mrs Ozer for attending the Gala Day and Elizabeth P who assisted in preparing the team.

Year 3 Navy
Year 3 Navy
Year 3 Navy have had a fantastic week of learning! In Geography, we’ve been discovering the amazing natural landmark Uluru and why it is so special to Australia. In English, we’ve been busy practising our poetry memorisation – students are building confidence, expression, and having fun performing their verses. In Maths, we’ve been exploring fractions, learning how to split shapes and numbers into equal parts. It’s been wonderful to see Year 3 working hard, trying their best, and enjoying new challenges!

GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day
GIVE Grow In Virtue Every day

The virtue we are focusing on in the Junior School is Courtesy.
Courtesy is treating people considerately and thinking about what is good and pleasant for them, not just us. It means seeking to make others comfortable and smooth over conflicts and awkwardness. Being courteous prevents rudeness and arguing. It helps a home or a school run more smoothly because people aren’t selfish.
I am practicing courtesy when I:
· Show others that I respect and value them
· Remember to treat elders, parents, teachers and children politely
· Think about how my actions affect others
· Eat, speak and move more graciously
· Greet people with a smile and kindness
Reflection questions for older children:
When I make choices, whose needs or feelings do I consider beyond my own?
Have I ever gone out of my way to help someone, even if it made things harder for me? What did that teach me?
Is there a recent moment where I could’ve shown more kindness or patience? What could I do differently next time?
Prime Minister's Spelling Bee
Prime Minister's Spelling Bee
This term, interested Year 6 students had the opportunity to compete in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, an Australia-wide online spelling competition. Students listened through their headphones as 30 spelling words were presented aurally, one at a time. They then had to type their responses. Accuracy was the highest priority, but speed was also an important factor.
More than 82,000 students around the country entered the competition, which was available for stage 2, 3 and 4 students. In each stage, the top 200 students went through to the next round, the State finals. Our students performed admirably, using the wonderful spelling skills they have developed through the WRAP program. We were thrilled that two Tangara girls made it to the State finals!! Only the top 3 students from the state level made it to the National final, and we were unsuccessful this time around.
Results:
State finalists:
Anisha P (12th in the state in the school round)
Gauri K 6N First runner up:
Alayna L 6R First runner up:
Catherine B and Olivia L (tie)
We look forward to expanding our involvement across more year levels in the competition next year.

Sister Mariam Assaf
Sister Mariam Assaf
On Tuesday 2nd September, our school community had the privilege of welcoming Sister Mariam Assaf, a Dominican Sister of St Cecilia and a proud alumna of the Class of 2009. Sr Mariam returned to Tangara with great joy, and it was a delight for both students and staff to receive her.
Sr Mariam addressed the Junior School and the Secondary School, sharing a moving testimony of her journey of faith. With gratitude, she reflected on the chaplains and chapel that nurtured her spiritual life during her time at Tangara, as well as the friendships and guidance from teachers, mentors and peers that shaped her along the way. Sr Mariam also recounted her experiences beyond school, including her university studies, international exchanges, and the path that ultimately led her to embrace her vocation as a Dominican Sister.
Students listened attentively and eagerly posed many thoughtful questions. From lighthearted inquiries about daily life in a religious community, to deeper reflections on her journey of faith. Their engagement revealed both their admiration for Sr Mariam and their genuine interest in her inspiring witness. Her visit was a memorable and uplifting occasion, reminding us of the enduring influence of faith, friendship, and formation at Tangara - treasures that continue to bear fruit long after graduation. Please keep Sister Mariam in your prayers, and two Novices of the Dominican Sisters of St Cecilia: Sister Keika Nishihara (Tangara Class of 2019) and Sister Catherine Murphy (Tangara Class of 2020).

Term 3 has flown by and it's hard to believe that there is only two weeks to go until we have to say farewell to our wonderful Year 12 students. We are very much looking forward to celebrating their school journey over the next fortnight but between now and then, learning still continues until the final festivities begin in the final week of term.
Punctuality for school
It is important that your daughter arrives on time to school each day. Our school day commences at 8:30am with Roll Call. If your daughter arrives past this time, she is required to sign-in as “Late” at the Admin Building and hand in her mobile phone here to be stored for the day. Infringements will continue to be issued for students arriving late without a valid explanation lodged via Engage. It is important that your daughter understands the importance of punctuality, as during morning Roll Call, important messages and announcements are given for the day ahead and we would not want her lateness to then impact her learning.

Jane Austen Day
Jane Austen Day
On Tuesday 2nd August, the library celebrated 250 years since the birth of famous English author Jane Austen. The library was decorated accordingly and the staff enjoyed a high tea during their recess break.
Students from Year 7 - Year 10 spent one lesson of their day engaged in Jane Austen Day activities. For half of their lesson, they made a fan and completed a Jane Austen Word Search. In the second half of their lesson, they had to solve 4 different wordles that were Jane Austen related and create a social media post pretending to be one of Jane Austen’s characters. Some of the more notable social media posts include:-
#Daughtersforsale - Mrs Bennett!
A Bennett girl caught my attention tonight…dare I say she has lovely ankles. But I won’t tell her yet!
#mixedsignals - Mr Darcy
Visiting family, potatoes were 10/10! - Mr Collins

Year 10 wheelchair basketball incursion
Year 10 wheelchair basketball incursion

On 12 September, our year 10 students had the unique opportunity to take part in a wheelchair basketball incursion.
Led by Stephan who was born with a disability, got his first wheelchair at the age of 5, and plays wheelchair rugby, the session introduced students to the fast-paced, exciting world of wheelchair basketball. From the moment they took their seats in the specially designed sports wheelchairs, students realised just how much skill, strength, and coordination the game requires.
After a quick introduction to the rules and techniques, students were straight into mini games. Laughter, friendly competition, and plenty of determination filled the court as students discovered new ways to pass, shoot, and move around. The session challenged everyone to think differently about ability, teamwork, and resilience.
More than just learning a new sport, the incursion opened students’ eyes to the importance of inclusivity in physical activity. They gained a greater appreciation for the talents of athletes with disabilities and experienced firsthand how sport can break down barriers.
