From the Principal
Welcome to 2026
It has been a pleasure to reconnect with our students, families and staff and to hear about the rest and renewal enjoyed over the summer break. I extend a very warm welcome to all our new families, students and staff joining the Tangara community this year.
We are especially delighted to welcome a record number of Tangara and Redfield graduates into Prep and Kindergarten. Their presence is a powerful reminder that Tangara is not simply a school, but a community that families choose to grow with over time - often across many years and generations.
That sense of continuity was beautifully highlighted this week as we celebrated two significant milestones: Tangara’s 44th birthday and 40 years at our Franklin Road, Cherrybrook campus. Tangara began humbly in 1982 in a small cottage on Fox Valley Road, Wahroonga, with just two teachers, seventeen students and twelve families. Today, we are a thriving school community of approximately 850 students, 110 staff and 600 families.
While much has changed over the past 44 years - our facilities, programs and opportunities, what has remained constant is our mission and ethos. Growth has never meant losing our identity. Rather, it has strengthened our commitment to forming young women of character, faith and academic excellence, prepared not simply for success, but for life, and always in genuine partnership with you, our parents.
I look forward to another year of academic and personal growth for all our students.
Character matters
During the recent school holidays, members of our Executive and Formation Teams attended the PRIMED Character Education Conference alongside colleagues from the other PARED schools. The conference affirmed the strength of the work already taking place at Tangara and reinforced our shared commitment to forming young women of faith, character and purpose, in partnership with parents. The professional dialogue and reflection will continue to inform our practice as we strive for ongoing improvement and remain faithful to our mission of educating for academic and personal excellence.
Tangara Graduates – Lives of Purpose and Passion
One of the great joys of my role as Principal is seeing the many and varied paths our Tangara graduates go on to pursue. Long after they leave our classrooms, it is heartening to witness how they continue to grow, contribute and flourish - often in ways that reflect passions first discovered and nurtured during their school years.
Claire Jilwan (Class of 2022) is a wonderful example. Claire began singing in Year 6 through voice lessons at Tangara and has continued to pursue her love of music with dedication and purpose. She is currently studying Secondary Education, majoring in Music and Drama, and has already achieved a number of remarkable milestones, including performing with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and making her Sydney Opera House debut. In 2026, Claire will again perform at the Opera House and tour internationally, including performances at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of encouraging young people to pursue their talents wholeheartedly and with confidence.
Our graduates’ paths, however, are not limited to one field or definition of success. We are also deeply inspired by the journeys of Keika Nishihara (Class of 2019) and Catherine Murphy (Class of 2020), who have recently joined the Dominican Sisters in Nashville. Keika is now Sr Paula and Catherine is Sr Catherine. The accompanying photograph shows the sisters preparing to welcome 300 Dominican Sisters to the Motherhouse over Christmas - work undertaken with joy, generosity and quiet dedication.
Whether through the arts, professional life, service or religious vocation, Tangara graduates demonstrate that when young women are formed in faith, character and excellence, they go on to live lives of purpose and meaning. At Tangara, we believe that academic achievement and personal formation go hand in hand. When students are supported to explore their gifts - whatever form they may take - they develop resilience, confidence and a deep sense of calling.
We are proud of all our graduates and grateful for the partnership with parents that makes this formation possible. Their lives remind us that Tangara students do not simply leave school prepared for the world, they go out and make a meaningful contribution to it.

From the Chaplain
As Ash Wednesday approaches, the Church places before us once again the beginning of Lent. This sacred season is not first of all a time of renunciation, but a time of truth. It invites us - adults and young people alike - to rediscover who we are before Jesus, and therefore how we are called to live with one another in our homes, classrooms, and communities.
For our students, Lent should not be presented as a period of simply “doing more religious things,” but as an invitation to learn to love better . When Jesus speaks in the Gospel about prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, He is not adding burdens. He is teaching a way of life that restores relationships. These three practices help us to look upward, inward, and outward: upward toward Jesus, inward toward our own hearts and habits, and outward toward the people entrusted to us.
This is why Lent can be lived through what we may call the three R’s , three directions of love that shape everyday life at Tangara.
The first is the relationship with Jesus. Prayer, even when brief and simple, teaches young people that they are not alone and not defined by performance or success. A practical step this Lent may be to encourage moments of silence at home or in class, or to begin the day by consciously placing it in the hands of Jesus.
The second is relationships within the family. Fasting is not only about food; it is about self-restraint for the sake of love. Parents and teachers can model this by patience in speech, by limiting distractions, and by choosing presence over haste. Small sacrifices lived with consistency speak powerfully to the young.
The third is relationships with friends and the wider community. Almsgiving teaches the logic of gift. This may take the form of time given to those who are overlooked, gestures of kindness within the school, or learning to forgive rather than exclude.
As we begin Lent on Ash Wednesday, may we help our students listen to the Gospel not as a rulebook, but as a mirror - one that reflects the patient, demanding, and life-giving love of Jesus, who alone renews every relationship.

Welcome to the 2026 School Year
What a wonderful start we have had to the year. We were delighted to welcome our new Year 1 leaders, who commenced the year with confidence and enthusiasm. They have already shown fabulous leadership skills as they introduced themselves to their new Year 1 friends and helped set a positive tone for the term. Our Year 1 students modelled beautiful behaviour and were outstanding role models for our new Kindergarten students.
On Friday, with big smiles, and only a tear or two, our Prep and Kindergarten children joined our school community. It was a heart-warming sight to see our little ones walk through the gates for the very first time, filled with awe, excitement, and anticipation. Meeting their 2026 teachers and new friends can sometimes bring a few nerves and butterflies, but these feelings quickly disappeared. Within minutes, classrooms were filled with smiles, giggles, and a sense of belonging.
We are proud of how smoothly the children have settled and how warmly our community has embraced the beginning of a new school year. We look forward to a joyful and productive term ahead.

From the Head of Junior School
It was wonderful to welcome all our students and families to the new school year. There is something energising about beginning again. The year ahead holds many opportunities for our students to grow both academically and personally, developing strong character and making thoughtful choices along the way.
Tangara’s 44th Birthday
We began the week with a special celebration of Tangara’s 44th birthday. The children loved marking the occasion with an ice block, especially as it was such a hot day! We will always be grateful to the founding families who began our school so many years ago.
Monitors and Student Leaders
We look forward to appointing our Junior School monitors next week. These students play an important role in supporting the smooth running of our school each day. Our Year 6 girls are also in the process of voting for their House Captains, a significant milestone in their leadership journey.
Debating
Our debating competition begins this week and the teams, made up of Yr 5 and Yr 6 students, have been training diligently with Mrs McFarlane. We wish them the very best for the competition ahead.
Fresh Classroom Door Displays
One of the delights of the new year is seeing the creative classroom door displays prepared by our teachers. These welcoming designs set a positive tone for the year ahead.
Teamwork in Action
Students have been engaging in a variety of fun teamwork challenges in the GIVE program this week. We hope all our students become positive members of their class, making good choices and supporting others.

GIVE
GIVE
In the Junior School we have been working on Teamwork. Teamwork is when a group of people link up to complete a task or achieve a common goal. Good teamwork means that the task will get done efficiently and usually requires humility, respect and flexibility. Group activities are often aided by leadership, but only when the participants respect the leader.
I am practicing teamwork when I:
· Get along with others and compromise
· Respect everyone’s opinions
· Offer support to others
· Use soft voices
· Participate actively
· Stay focused on the task
Reflection Questions:
😊 What was the last team/group I was in? Thinking honestly, was I a good team player?
😊 How do I determine if a group needs a leader, and who that leader should be?
😊 How can I be a better team player in my classroom and at home?
😊 What is something I do that helps my friends when we work or play together?
😊 How can I show kindness and take turns when I’m in a group?

Tangara will again enter the Da Vinci Decathlon in 2026. This is a team-based
competition where groups of 8 students complete tasks in the domains of
engineering, mathematics, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation,
creative producers, cartography and legacy. The junior school competition takes
place on Thursday May 14 th and will involve one team from each of year 5 and year
6. Students will be nominated by their teachers using an established criteria list and
must be able to commit to one lunch time per week to practise with the team.

From the Secondary School
Welcome to Term 1 in Secondary
Welcome to Term 1 in Secondary
A warm welcome to all of our Tangara Secondary families in 2026. A very special welcome goes to our Year 7's, new students, parents and staff members who have joined our school this year. It was wonderful to see the Secondary School buzzing again last Monday, as the girls returned from the holidays in high spirits with beaming smiles and embracing their friends, as they eagerly went from room to room to see where their new homerooms were located and which class they had been placed in!
We were able to celebrate the Class of 2025 during a Special Assembly last week. It was wonderful to hear from two of our students from last year's graduating class, Emily M and Heidi J, as they reflected on their path to success during the HSC. Some practical tips they gave our Secondary girls included: be consistent with study throughout the year as the HSC is a marathon and not a sprint, have a balance between home and school life, complete practice questions regularly and ask your teachers for help anytime you are unsure of a new concept.
Again this year, we will be encouraging our girls to set high expectations in all aspects of school life, for example, work ethic, behaviour, punctuality and presentation, just to name a few. We are also encouraging the girls to make the most of the opportunities available to them here at Tangara by increasing their participation in co-curricular activities, whether it may be in Sport, Community Service, Music, Public Speaking, Creative or Performing Arts.
Good Luck to our ISDA Debaters who have their first round of the competition tonight at Tangara. It is also wonderful to see so many of our Secondary students volunteering to assist with our home debates.
Some highlights for the next fortnight for Secondary will be:
- ISDA Debating Rounds 2 and 3
- Elevate Study Skills Seminars
- Ash Wednesday Mass
- HZSA Rep Sport Trial Day
- Tangara's Term 1 Open Day
The Secondary Staff and I thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to an enjoyable and productive year at Tangara Secondary!
See below for some photos of our Secondary girls in action during the first fortnight!

Year 11 & 12 Drama Excursion to OnStage

On Saturday, 7 February, our Year 11 and Year 12 Drama students had the exciting opportunity to begin their academic year with a visit to OnStage, the annual showcase of exemplary HSC Drama performances and projects. This inspiring event featured a diverse selection of outstanding individual projects and group performances from the 2025 cohort, highlighting the creativity, commitment and skill demonstrated by students across New South Wales. The experience not only broadened their understanding of what is possible within the HSC Drama course but also provided valuable insight into the high standards required for success. Students left feeling energised and motivated, with many already discussing ideas and possibilities for their own upcoming projects.
It was a wonderful way to start the year and we look forward to seeing how this exposure to exemplary work will inspire and shape the creative journeys of our talented Drama students.

Captains' Corner
Hi, my name is Jaime, your Sport Captain for 2026. My passion for sport began at the age of five when I first stepped onto a netball court. Since then, sport has become a huge part of my life, shaping who I am both on and off the court. I have been playing netball for 12 years and have loved every season. Alongside netball, I’ve enjoyed participating in a variety of other sports including tennis, touch football, oz tag, swimming, squash and many more. Being involved in so many different sports has helped me build confidence, stay active, and create many friendships.
As Sport Captain, my goal is to encourage the Tangara community to get involved in sport not just by competing, but by supporting and cheering each other on. We already saw this incredible school spirit at our swimming carnival last term. It was an amazing day and it was great to see everyone cheering for their houses and participating in events. I'm really looking forward to seeing this same energy and enthusiasm in the cross-country and athletics carnivals later this year. I’m excited for the year ahead and can’t wait to see what we achieve together in 2026!
